Greetings to you from Camp Sancta Maria, in this very special month of Mary, our Blessed Mother! |
Dear Friends and Family
of
Camp Sancta Maria,
|
With Camp opening its doors for our 2019 season in just a few weeks, our thoughts turn to our campers
in a more focused way
. One of the beauties of CSM is the diversity of our campers
and the tremendous opportunity for growth that this diversity brings: in a single cabin one can sometimes find a
n only child sharing a bunk with a camper with seven siblings
; a
camper from the country
striking up a friendship
with a camper from
the suburb of
a big city
; a camper from a home that lacks little in material blessings sharing a bunk with a camper whose family scrapes to get by
.
These dynamics can really open their eyes.
While nearly all of our campers come from privileged homes, it's always been important for us to welcome all
kids
, and to
do everything we can so that no
child is
turned
away
because their family cannot afford to send their child to camp
. One way we accomplish this, thanks to your generosity, is through the CSM Scholarship Fund.
While we sometimes ask pastors in Detroit to CSM to send a child who shows leadership potential, a
nother part of
this
outreach
to the disadvantaged has come
through friends who had relationships at one of our
local
H
ealth and
H
uman
S
ervices departments
(HHS)
.
For a number of years, the
State sponsored some campers
who
came
from broken homes and other challenging situations, allowing them to attend CSM at no cost to the families. Due to budget cuts, however, they will not be able to send any campers to CSM this summer. As
one Department worker
shared her disappointment with me, she tearfully shared how important CSM has been to so many children who come through their doors.
She commented:
"For the one week they're at Camp Sancta Maria, they're not poor; they're not fatherless; they're just another kid at Camp having a great time."
And so we have a special request. Would you please make a special effort throughout the summer, daily if possible, to join us in praying for our campers and their families? We pray that those who need financial assistance to attend can find the funding they need, whether through CSM's Scholarship Fund or other means. We pray that families' hearts be open to send their kids to Camp, as the Holy Spirit leads them. We pray that our campers' hearts would be open to the
gentle promptings
of the Holy Spirit during their time here. And we pray that they will return home physically refreshed, that they will have grown personally, and that they will be more firmly on the path to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We are so grateful for your prayers, especially mid-June through late August, when our campers will be with us. Thank you!

Work Camp 2019 is in full swing!
The seminarians have arrived from Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and are hard at work, along with our dedicated team of volunteers. Among a long list of projects, one of the volunteer housing buildings is getting a fresh coat of paint and, thanks to a generous donor, new flooring is being installed. We are grateful that thanks to another generous donor and a team of volunteers, a new hot water tank has been installed in the utility room under the mess hall. We are blessed to have received funding from yet another donor to replace the weathered and worn split rail fencing around Camp with beautiful and durable vinyl fencing. We look forward to sharing photos with you when these and many other donor-funded projects are complete. We are so grateful to you
for your financial and prayerful support, which makes these and so many other projects and improvements possible! Thank you!

A visit to the scrapyard was in order after cleaning up the grounds and buildings at Camp.

CSM is held in a trust governed by an independent Board of Trustees. While the Archdiocese of Detroit had generously donated the services of one its priests for decades, they are not responsible for CSM financially. This means that we are responsible to secure our own funding to advance the mission that has been passed down to us since our founding in 1933. To continue this essential work, we need your help. Are you feeling called to donate? Thank you for your prayerful consideration!
