Sermon:  "The Uprising of Fellowship (Person-ship) "

Scripture : II Timothy 1:3-10

This Sunday
This Sunday we continue the Easter theme of "Uprising."  We continue to read Brian McLaren's book, "We Make a Road by Walking," and we continue to examine our role in that potential uprising.  This Sunday is Mother's Day; a day set aside to celebrate our moms.  Yet over time this Sunday has shifted from simply a day to celebrate Mother's Day and moved on to become a day we celebrate the Christian home and celebrate the empowerment of women.  I believe it's possible to do all three.  This Sunday I'd like to focus on a few somewhat obscure biblical women, those who are often overlooked, or even unnamed.  Yet I don't want to stop there.  My hope is to expand that focus beyond scripture.  As much as we can each name women in our world who have been significant, I believe it's often those who go quietly behind the scenes, out of the spotlight, who have also had an equally powerful influence on us and on the world.  So, this Sunday, that's what we'll be exploring. Let's come together and celebrate our moms, but let's also celebrate our homes and some of those women who have influenced us in quiet and courageous ways.  I look forward to sharing some of their stories.  To prepare, please read the first ten verses of Paul's second letter to young Timothy, specifically II Timothy 1:3-10.
MINISTRY NEWS
Come Be in the Picture!
Sunday, May 12
We will take a congregational picture outside the front doors of our church between services on Sunday, May 12.. The picture will be used in our paperwork that we are submitting to join the Reconciling Ministries network. It will also appear on our website and Facebook feed. We hope you will dress in colorful expressions of who you are. Rainbows are welcome, but not required. May 12 is also Mother's Day and there will be pancakes available in Friendship Hall so bring your mother or your mother-figures, or anyone who likes to eat pancakes. All who wish to be in the picture are welcome. All who wish to eat pancakes are also welcome. When the cooks can step away from the griddle briefly, we'll get the picture taken while making sure that no one is left hungry.
At the Crossroads-Change the Date!

Mini-Stewardship Campaign Isin FULL Swing!
We are in the middle of our Mini-Stewardship Campaign for the six-month budget of July 1 - December 31, 2019. Our theme is "Who We Are." We are highlighting our staff and the amazing ministry work they do. Last Sunday, Patrick Eames & Kristin Thorsness shared their personal stories about Jen & Griffey and our Children, Youth & Family Ministry. Also, Joe Lee spoke about Wendi and all the tasks, details and interactions she does as our Office Manager. Last week you should have received the Stewardship Letter & Pledge Card in the mail. If you did not receive it, please contact Wendi. For all the stewardship information that has been shared so far, please go to the church website and check out the Stewardship page at  http://aldersgate-church.org/stewardship/. Thank you for your grace and support during this Stewardship Campaign.
Church Dinner & Common Table
Monday, May 20
On Monday May 20 we will have a church potluck dinner at 6:30pm.  Please bring a main dish to share!  Following diner there will be a Common Table meeting at 7:00pm.  Jim Phillips, the chairperson of the church Finance Team, and Pastor Brad will lead an information session and discussion about the state of the church. There have been some financial setbacks that we would like to explain to the congregation so there is full understanding of our status.   This is part of our current focus on who we are and the important ways that God has called us to be in ministry here. Attending this session is the best way to gain a fuller understanding of the finances of the church and especially the operating budget. While talking about money may not be anyone's favorite thing to do at church, not talking about it can mean that key information is not accessible to the people who need it. There will be three agenda items.

1. The budget cycle running from July 2018-June 2019 and how this fiscal year is turning out
2. A series of withdrawals from our "Foundation" account, a savings account that we rely on for major expenses
3. Current hopes and dreams for this church, including progress on becoming a Reconciling Congregation

This information is vitally important to all members and active participants in the church.  Please plan to be there. Sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact the church office if you will come to the dinner or if you need childcare.   If you can not attend this meeting, the slides from the presentation will be available in the Narthex on Sunday morning and there will be a written summary of the information for electronic distribution.   Core Leaders will meet at 6:00, immediately before the Common Table meeting.
Ready to join us?
We are looking forward to welcoming new members to our congregation during worship in June. If you are interested in learning more about membership and/or joining our church, please see Pastor Laura or send her an email at  [email protected].

Summer Music
Calling all musicians! We are looking for any type of special music the last few Sundays in June during second service, and then from July thru Labor Day in September at 10:00am when we will gather together for one worship service thru the summer. Vocal or instrumental, individuals or ensembles, children or seniors, all are welcome to share their musical gifts with the congregation. Please contact Allison Renn for more information.
Summer Worship Schedule for 2019
This summer, our Worship Team has decided to hold one worship service each Sunday at 10:00am from July 7 through September 1. We will worship together as one body at one time for all of July and August and on Labor Day weekend. We will move back to two services on September 8. The exact format of the services is not yet known. Worship team is working on making sure there is still time for all our musicians to take a vacation, and also for special music that has long been a favorite in second service during the summer. Our pastors are also working on what the summer sermon series will be and how best to design a single service around themes that relate to those series. Some weeks may feel more contemporary and some may feel more traditional, but every week will be an opportunity to praise God together with joy and thanksgiving. We hope you will be here whenever it's possible with your summer activity schedule.
Church Directory
Concerned that the on-line church directory was vulnerable to hackers, we removed access to it from the church website until we figure out how to make it more secure. In the mean time, we left some paper copies of the church directory on the desk in the narthex if you need one. As always, please send updated family photos and contact information to Wendi in the office. It is amazing how some people never seem to get any older!
Volunteer @ VBS 2019
We need many volunteers at all different levels to make Vacation Bible School a success.  Prayerfully consider helping out prior to VBS, during VBS (Monday-Thursday, July 22-25) or at the church picnic (Sunday July 28).  There are opportunities to work directly with kids, completely behind the scenes, and everything in between.  Talk to Jen and see how your gifts could best be utilized at Vacation Bible School.  VBS is a great outreach into our community and an extremely important time within our church by deepening relationships new and old and focusing on how we can be bold with our faith and go beyond the ordinary.
