We're writing to ask for your help, and it's urgent -- our state lawmakers head back to Raleigh on Wednesday, May 16th, and we need them to support clean energy for the future of our birds. Will you take a moment now to add your name here?
Here's why we strongly support responsibly sited clean energy: National Audubon's landmark Birds and Climate Change Report revealed that nearly half of all North American birds are severely threatened by climate change. Consequently, cutting back on greenhouse gas emissions and moving towards renewable energy will help us protect the birds we love.
While North Carolina is a leader in the solar industry, the state legislature passed an 18-month moratorium on all new wind-energy projects last summer. Existing state and federal laws require wind developers to carefully consider and consult with military and wildlife interests to ensure projects are properly sited to maximize their benefits. We know that ridge-top wind turbines threaten birds, but the Mountain Ridge Protection Act of 1983 already protects these areas from turbines, and there are areas in the piedmont and near the coast that could be ideal for harnessing the power of wind while reducing harm to birds.
The Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society (EMAS) strongly supports well-planned clean energy initiatives that benefit our birds, our environment, and our economy.
Birds and other wildlife need our help more than ever. EMAS is actively committed to conserving bird/wildlife habitat and protecting climate-impacted species. Via emails like this, we plan to highlight ways in which you can help.
EMAS will send out updates periodically on important issues that impact birds and their environment-but we don't plan to overrun your inbox with a lot of email.
Please share with your family and friends via email and on social media. Together, our voices are powerful!
