USDA seeks NAREEE advisory board nominations
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the opening of the solicitation for nominations to fill vacancies on the National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics (NAREEE) Advisory Board and its subcommittees. There is one vacancy on the NAREEE Advisory Board; nine vacancies on the National Genetic Resources Advisory Council; three vacancies on the Specialty Crop Committee; and eight vacancies on the Citrus Disease Subcommittee. DATES: All nomination materials should be submitted in a single, complete package and received or postmarked by April 26, 2019. ADDRESSES: The nominee's name, resume or CV, completed and signed Form AD-755, and any letters of support must be submitted via one of the following methods: (1) Email (preferred) to nareeeab@ars.usda.gov; (2) By fax to 202-720-6199; or (3) By mail delivery service to: REE Advisory Board Office, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Jamie L. Report shows ag research funding can supercharge U.S. industry
A newly released report shows how U.S. farmers - facing a surge of weather events and disease outbreaks - can increase production and revenues with innovations produced by federally funded agricultural research but warns that more investment in agricultural research is needed to prevent falling further behind China.
According to the report issued by the Supporters of Agricultural Research (SoAR) Foundation and 20 FedByScience research institutions, agricultural research and development (R&D) funding has an estimated return on investment of 20 to 1. While other federal research investments have grown, however, the report said U.S. agricultural research funding has stagnated. China, on the hand, invests nearly twice as much as the U.S. in agricultural science.
ERS, NIFA move focus of House hearing
In a House agriculture appropriations subcommittee hearing Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture continued to defend, while past administrators and agency officials opposed, USDA's plans on relocating the Economic Research Service (ERS) and the National Institute of Food & Agriculture (NIFA) outside of the National Capital Region and the ERS realignment under the purview of the Office of the Chief Economist.
Kristin Boswell, senior advisor to the secretary of agriculture, tried to alleviate concerns brought by the handful of representatives who questioned her. She said USDA remains confident that both ERS and NIFA can remain objective and trusted sources of information if moved outside the Washington, D.C., region and gave the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention as an example, with its headquarters in Atlanta, Ga.
FDA issues revised Q&A on VFD regulation  
On March 27, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued a draft revised guidance for industry (GFI) #120, "Veterinary Feed Directive Regulation Questions & Answers."
FDA said the guidance is intended to aid industry in complying with the requirements of the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) final rule published in June 2015 and serves as a "Small Entity Compliance Guide."
According to FDA, the updated version of draft revised GFI #120 enhances and expands upon the previous version released in September 2015 by adding 53 new questions and answers (Q&As) and revising 14 Q&As on a wide range of topics related to the VFD final rule.

ADSA Joins in call for increased support for USDA in FY20 Budget
 ADSA and FASS joined other members of the Animal Ag Coalition in a letter to the chairs and ranking members of the Senate and House Appropriations and Ag Appropriations subcommittees supporting research, animal health and food safety programs in the FY20 budget. The letter noted that funding through the Agriculture Subcommittee plays a vital role in our daily lives by ensuring a safe and plentiful food supply, defending America's animal and plant resources from agricultural pests and diseases, and advancing agriculture research. This and other coalition letters that ADSA has joined may be found in the Advocacy section of the ADSA website .

Teaching Workshop at 2019 ADSA Annual Meeting
 Continuing our series of ADSA Annual Meeting teaching workshops, the  2019 Teaching Workshop: Planning, Implementation and Evaluating Classroom Discussion  will take place on Sunday afternoon, June 23 (space is limited, so register soon). The facilitator for the workshop is Michel Wattiaux (University of Wisconsin-Madison). The workshop will be followed by a teaching symposium on Monday, June 24.
Discussion is one way to engage our students in critical thinking in the classroom. Unfortunately, most instructors have limited experience with planning, implementing, and engaging students in effective classroom discussions. In 2019 Teaching Workshop, we will review the educational psychology literature, discuss various techniques (think-pair-share, Socratic seminar, jigsaw, debate, and structured academic controversy), and learn how to assess the effectiveness of classroom discussions. Whether you have taught for decades or you are at the beginning of your teaching career, this workshop will help you reconsider your approach to engaging students in higher levels of learning and provide you with practical tips to improve the effectiveness of your classroom discussions.
