bestselling author, educator, television personality, and humanitarian. In 2010, Andrés formed World Central Kitchen, a non-profit that aims to provide smart solutions to end hunger and poverty by using the power of food to empower communities and strengthen economies.

Dean Cancian Named President-Elect of APPAM
The Association of Public Policy and Management is a network of academics, researchers, and practitioners on the cutting edge of policy research. Dean Cancian will begin serving as president by convening the next APPAM Fall Research Conference.

McCourt Rises in US News & World Report's Best Schools of Public Affairs Rankings
U.S. News & World Report ranks specialty areas for programs of excellence within the category of public affairs. The McCourt School moved up across four specialty areas: from 4th to 3rd in international global policy and administration, from 18th to 14th in public policy analysis, from 33rd to 21st in public management and leadership, and a debut at 20th in social policy.

McCourt Student and Professor Launch Gates-Foundation Backed Intervention for Venezuelan Refugees
Andrea Vargas (MPP '19) and adjunct professor Joseph Firchein used a grant from the Gates Foundation to connect Venezuelans in Colombia with free legal help to speed up their entry into Ecuador. They've secured more than 1,200 working visas so far.

Conservation Expert Peter Marra Named Director of the Georgetown Environment Initiative
Smithsonian veteran Marra, a career bridge builder between science and policy, has been named director of the Georgetown Environment Initiative (GEI), the Laudato Si' Chair in Biology and the Environment, and professor in the McCourt School of Public Policy.

Teams of Georgetown Graduate Students Develop Real-World Policy Interventions for DC
In the fifth annual Georgetown Public Policy Challenge, student teams presented policy solutions for problems plaguing DC's residents. The five finalists addressed asthma incidence, food insecurity, pest control, affordable housing, and recidivism.

Lugar Center and McCourt School Release Bipartisan Index Rankings
The Bipartisan Index rankings complete the picture of the 115th Congress. Despite the rhetoric and atmosphere in Washington, bipartisanship scores improved for the third straight Congress, suggesting lawmakers can and do work across the aisle.

GUPolitics Relaunches the Battleground Poll
The Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service Battleground Poll is a bipartisan survey of registered voters in the United States, used to measure voter opinion and sentiment. The poll is conducted by The Tarrance Group and Lake Research Partners.

Baker Fellows Tackle Job Loss and Automation at New America
Working for New America's Work, Workers and Technology Program, the Baker Fellows incorporated human-centered design training and experiential fieldwork to engage directly with workers in D.C. whose jobs will be impacted by technological change.

An expert on the federal budget, the congressional budget process, and policy communications, Stan's unique style and sense of humor brought these complex topics to life for his students. He will be deeply missed by all within the McCourt community.
