Gelardi Student Center: Pardon Our Progress

Construction is active on campus and our capital campaign is underway. The new Drs. Thom and Betty Gelardi Student Center will underscore the institution’s focus on student success, including a new library, bookstore, campus café, large meeting space, student study spaces, lounge areas and more. Constructing the Future:
Register for Lyceum 2018
 
The continuing education department at Sherman College of Chiropractic is Constructing the Future and will be hosting its annual continuing education and homecoming event, Lyceum, May 3-5, 2018, at the Downtown Spartanburg Marriott in Spartanburg, SC. Up to 23 hours of CE have been applied for.
 
More than 30 speakers who are thought leaders and technical experts in the chiropractic world will help you sharpen your skills and build further success in practice. The plenary speaker lineup includes several leaders in chiropractic: Drs. Jeanne Ohm, Edwin Cordero, Dean Sottile and David Fletcher. In addition, hear from experts in SOT, Thompson, NSA, pediatrics, philosophy, radiology, practice management, documentation and so much more. Register for Lyceum today!
Ainsley Says: Submit Your Work
to IRAPS 2018
 
Ainsley Marie Marshall wishes to remind you that abstracts for this year’s International Research and Philosophy Symposium (IRAPS) are due May 1! Ainsley, who just turned one, is the daughter of Monica Friske Marshall, D.C., ’14, and Chip Marshall of Bristol VA/TN.
 
This year is Sherman College’s 15th annual IRAPS; the event is a peer-reviewed chiropractic conference that addresses vertebral subluxation research and the philosophy of chiropractic. Abstracts are to take the form of short papers having about 300 words; references are expected. View the full Call for Submissions, and find out more about the symposium. The conference is scheduled for October 6-7, 2018, and continuing education credit will be available.
Students, Faculty Attend Memorial Service for Donors
 
Six Sherman College students and two faculty members recently helped honor the individuals and families of those who donated their bodies to science during the previous year as they attended a service of commemoration on April 6 hosted by the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, which supplies Sherman College’s lab with donor bodies.
 
Anatomy Lab Manager Edgardo Rivera, M.D., and faculty member Terry Lancaster, M.S., as well as students Angelica Davila, Chris Demczar, Rebekah Drum, Steven Hedges, Cutter Newton and Jason Shull represented Sherman College at the event, which nearly 400 of the donors’ relatives, friends and supporters attended.
 
Student Jason Shull was selected to speak at the event, and his speech was published in the event program. He shared a memorable quote and explained how it related to Sherman students’ interactions with their very first patients in Anatomy Lab. “As our first patients, your loved ones taught us more than anatomy,” Shull explained. “[They gave] us a new respect for ‘everyday life.’ Each patient is a new experience, a new chance to learn, a new chance to increase our knowledge, and a new chance to give back…. Who knew that one loving donation could affect so many lives? We didn’t, but we do now.” Read more on the blog .
Bookstore Offers Class Rings to Sherman Grads
 
The Sherman College Bookstore has partnered with Jostens to offer class rings. The store is offering five different varieties:

  • White Lustrium (pictured) $251.22 (men), $245.92 (women)
  • Suncast $346.62 (men only, yellow gold)
  • Silver Elite $392.20 (men), $355.51 (women) – looks like the White Lustrium but it’s blended with precious metals
  • 10K $689.00 (men), $567.10 (women)
  • Yellow Lustrium $341.32 (women only)
 
Prices include taxes and shipping. Each ring will be customized with the graduation year on one side and “DC” on the opposite side. The Bookstore has samples on hand. Sherman College alumni can contact the Bookstore to order; email Bookstore Manager Angela Thrift or call 800-849-8771, ext. 260.
EPIC Technique Club Clears Community Green Space
 
Sherman College’s Evolutionary Percussive Instrument Corrections (EPIC) Technique Club recently partnered with the Stonewood Crossing homeowner’s association to host a club cleanup service event. The event was hosted to clean the HOA’s community greenspace nature trail that borders Sherman College’s 80 acres.
 
Thirteen students from 10 different clubs, ranging from Little Spines Club to Animal Chiropractic, served a total of 17.75 man hours. Some students cleared the trail and surrounding areas of debris and trash, while others worked on managing and mowing the lawn of a disabled Army veteran who served in Iraq. Read more on the blog.
Community Service Club Packs Boxes for Military Members
 
Committed to making a difference in the local area and around the world, Sherman College’s Community Service Club completes at least one service project each quarter. For winter quarter, the club did a “pack-a-box” drive for active military members overseas.
 
Crediting recent Sherman alumna Jessica Bradburn, D.C., ’15, for the idea, club vice president Bob Winters said the organization collected items to send overseas to active military, specifically Army soldiers in Afghanistan. The boxes have initially been sent to Bagram Air Force Base and then will be shared with the smaller forward operating bases in RC East part of Afghanistan. Read more on the blog.
Sherman College Night at the Greenville Swamp Rabbits
 
Sherman College students, employees, alumni and friends swamped Bon Secours arena at the Friday, March 23, Greenville Swamp Rabbits hockey game. The college’s representation gave the Upstate a strong showing of Sherman Pride and emphasized the positive impact of chiropractic care.
 
Interns were on hand to share the chiropractic message with attendees, and admissions representatives answered questions about careers in chiropractic to interested passers-by on the concourse. The Sherman Pride mascot, Larry the Lion, was a hit with the kids in attendance, offering abundant high-fives and dance moves. See photos from the event.
 
“Connecting with the Swamp Rabbit Hockey team was an exciting way for Sherman College interns and staff to educate our community about the importance of taking care of your spine and nervous system,” said Assistant Director of Development Hunter Mahon. “Experts estimate that 90 percent of all world-class athletes use chiropractic care to prevent injuries and increase performance potential, and so representation at professional and local athletics events is an important and fun way Sherman College gives back to the community.”
 
The college received a portion of ticket sales and Chuck-a-Carrot sales to be used toward the current capital campaign, but more importantly, the Upstate had an opportunity to learn more about Sherman College and chiropractic care.
Showcase Sherman Weekend Welcomes Prospective Students, Guests

Sherman College is hosting its Showcase Sherman Weekends for 2018 at the AC Hotel in downtown Spartanburg. Due to construction on campus, prospective students and their guests are invited to stay at the new hotel to further enjoy and explore Spartanburg each day after sessions end. Attendees have an opportunity to visit the Sherman College campus for a tour and a palpation session, and they also enjoy a trip to downtown Greenville’s Falls Park. Showcase Sherman Weekend is an event for prospective students to explore chiropractic and Sherman College and is designed to ignite students’ passion for leadership as well as help them begin their pursuit of becoming the next generation of DCs2B. Our next Showcase Sherman Weekends for 2018 are scheduled for August 3-4, and November 2-3, and they will be held off campus at the AC Hotel in downtown Spartanburg during the campus expansion. August registration is open, but space is limited. Spread the word and send the next generation of chiropractors to visit during this exciting time in Sherman College’s history.
Stetzel, Ortiz to Represent
Sherman at Talk the TIC
 
Students Danielle Stetzel and Christian Ortiz took top honors in Sherman College’s Talk the TIC Competition April 12 on campus, with Stetzel winning the English talk and Ortiz winning the Spanish talk. Both will travel to Life University to compete in the world finals on May 17.
 
In this annual competition, students must present for five minutes or less and are assessed by a panel of judges based on the quality and effectiveness of persuading people to take action.

Judges for the competition included Sherman College Domestic and International Recruiter Lina Guillen-Sucre, Philosophy Department Chair Bill Decken, D.C., D.Ph.CS, and Director of Evidence-Informed Curriculum and Practice Christopher Kent, D.C., J.D.
Ivanov, Luo Serve as NBCE
Subject Matter Experts
 
Assistant Professor of Basic Sciences Dr. Maksim Ivanov and Director of Research Dr. Pengju George Luo served on the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) Part I Test Development Committee and Part I Standard Setting Committee this April at NBCE headquarters in Greeley, CO. Ivanov and Luo served as subject-matter experts on Physiology and on Microbiology, respectively.
 
Members of the Test Development Committee were responsible for reviewing, editing and analyzing test questions for content and appropriateness for future examinations. Members of the Standard Setting Committee were responsible for reviewing hundreds of test questions and setting cut scores for each subject area of the NBCE Part I Exam.
ROARing Louder for
Sherman College
 
Sherman College of Chiropractic has entered a time of unprecedented growth, having doubled its enrollment over the past five years. As the college continues to “Adjust the World,” it is transforming the campus with new and renovated facilities to accommodate more students, technology, program enhancements, and community engagement.
 
In this time of change, the college is also reshaping the ROAR program to ensure it is as effective as possible for building the future of the chiropractic profession. Sherman College Event and Program Manager Emily Wood is looking forward to revamping the program. “The passion that we all have for sharing chiropractic and Sherman College with the world makes the ROAR program a powerful collective effort, and it also makes directing the program so much fun,” she explained. “Our ROAR members all possess the desire to foster and inspire the next generation of chiropractors, and that passion will continue to grow and shape the profession.”
 
Wood said Sherman College is relaunching the ROAR program to better serve members in 2018. She is asking that everyone, including current ROAR members, update their information on this form . The deadline for ROAR registration is July 1, 2018 .

Why Chiropractic: After 21 years of being an asthmatic patient, chiropractic arrived in my life and CHANGED it completely. I want to give people the opportunity to have their lives changed forever like chiropractic did for me.
 
Favorite thing about Sherman: My favorite thing about Sherman is the awesome family-friendly environment. Everyone knows each other! The desire of the entire faculty to help you achieve your success, and the desire of making you the best chiropractor you can be is amazing.

Student Ambassadors Celebrate
at Quarterly Dinner
 
Student Ambassadors shared a great time of fellowship and celebrated the group’s hard work during its quarterly dinner on April 10, hosted by Ambassador Program Manager Emily Wood; food was provided by Groucho’s Deli of Spartanburg.
 
New student ambassadors were inducted and quarterly awards were given. Letitia Smith received the Showcase Star Award. Charles Tucker and Angelica Lopez both received the Ambassador of the Quarter Award. In addition, the group had a unique opportunity to learn to be better communicators and Ambassadors through specialized training with Rico Peña, the college’s consultant in strategic resource and tactical training.
AutismOne: Save $50 on Registration and Give Back to Sherman College

The program, which is co-sponsored by Sherman College, promises to provide “the best information from the chiropractic and other healing communities to prepare the practicing chiropractor with up-to-the-minute information, confidence, and resources to help children with autism.” AutismOne is a nonprofit, parent-driven organization that provides education and supports advocacy efforts for children and families touched by an autism diagnosis.
 
The event is the first-ever chiropractic pediatric CE program with an emphasis on autism and is designed to open the door to more chiropractors serving this group of children, taking the fear out of this neurodevelopmental disorder and replacing it with optimism and hope for improved health, function, and quality of life. Sherman College Dean of Clinical Sciences Dr. Armand Rossi will be presenting.
Interns Complete
Clinic Challenge eXperience

Sherman College’s newest interns completed the Clinic Challenge Experience (CCX) last week on campus. CCX was designed to help students make a successful transition from classroom to chiropractic internship by sharpening their professional focus, energizing their passion for chiropractic and exposing them to success principles for practice. The ropes course on Sherman College’s 80-acre campus consists of a variety of challenges — using ropes, pulleys, walls, platforms, poles — all of which present students with the opportunity to use problem-solving skills and teamwork.

Facilitators, health center faculty members and teammates encourage participants to face and overcome whatever fears are blocking their ability to accomplish the tasks.

The Health Center faculty recognizes interns each month who excel in clinical performance, patient management, professionalism, and analytical and adjusting technique. The March 2018 Intern of the Month is Dylan Drinkard of Madison, WV. Dylan graduates in September 2018 and plans to practice in Morgantown, WV.
