SCIS Parents,
Please take some time to watch the video above and review the information below about important dates, events, and student recognition. May is an incredibly busy month, and we hope this helps you know what is happening.
1. Teacher Appreciation Week (See video)
Tomorrow is the end of teacher appreciation week. I hope you will take a moment to let your child's teachers know they made a difference in your child's school experience.
2. STAAR Testing Next Week (See video)
Monday, May 13th, 6th Grade Math STAAR Test
Tuesday, May 14th, 6th Grade Reading STAAR Test
Wednesday, May 15th, 5th Grade Science STAAR Test.
- Closed Campus- No deliveries or visitors please
- No Cellphones
- Dress in Layers
- Bring water and quiet snacks.
- Bring 2 books and 2 pencils.

4. Last day to pick up lost and found: Friday May 17th.

Spinal Screening
5th Grade Parents,
We will begin Spinal Screening for 5th grade girls starting Thursday, May 16. State law requires that schools screen students for abnormal spinal curvature. Girls will be screened again in 7th grade and boys will be screened once in the 8th grade. Catching a spinal problem early can make the treatment much easier. Not treating spinal problems can lead to serious health problems. Your daughter will be screened during their Health class with Coach Rieff.
~Girls needs to wear a sports bra or two piece swimsuit top the day they are
going to be screened.
~Spinal screening will take place in the clinic.
~Girls will be screened one at a time behind a privacy screen.
If your daughter has already had a physical during the 2018-2019 school year and has had spinal screening done by their physician, please have the office fax a note to me at 469-742-8401 or email:
[email protected], and they will exempt from spinal screening at school. If there are any abnormalities, I will communicate with you via email.

SCIS Hack-A-Thon May 29-30 - Volunteers Needed:
SCIS is hosting Hack-A-Thon on May 29-30. Hack-A-Thon is a two day competition at SCIS where students engage in solving a real-world problem by engineering a prototype and an accompanying phone app. To do this, students use all sorts of materials to build their prototype. In previous years, it's been a bit of a free for all with regards to materials, and some of our kiddos get wrapped up in building prototypes they will never finish or that are really sparkly. This year, we are planning to shake things up a bit by providing each team with a budget and debit card they can spend at the STEM Store. To do this we will need parent volunteers for both days to man the cash registers (a laptop with a simple excel file) and fill orders (grab stuff off of a list and bag it up). In addition, if you are an engineer or have an interest in STEM fields and would like to help students problem solve through out the day we would love your assistance.

Important News from Student Nutrition Regarding Student Meal Accounts
This is a courtesy message from Lovejoy Student Nutrition Services to inform households of an upcoming change in student meal accounts. In an effort to minimize negative balances at the end of the school year, beginning Wednesday, May 8 and for the remainder of the school year, students will no longer be able to charge meals which will result in the student incurring a negative balance to their meal account. Students may continue to use their lunch accounts as long as they have money in the account. Households with students who currently have negative balances will receive reminder emails and phone calls. Federal regulations prohibit us from rolling over negative balances to the next school year. Please make arrangements to remit payment for any negative lunch accounts your child may have incurred.
All positive balances will be rolled over to next school year. If you have a graduating senior, funds may be transferred to any sibling in the school district. To request a meal account refund, please complete a
refund request form located on the Student Nutrition website. For assistance, please contact Student Nutrition at 469.742.8041.
Student Nutrition Services thanks you for your understanding and for allowing us to serve your student(s) this school year.

ATTENTION 6TH GRADE PARENTS:
There are two vaccinations required by the State of Texas for 7th grade: Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) and the meningococcal vaccine. Typically students will receive these vaccines at their 11 or 12 year old check up. If your student receives this vaccine, please email or fax a copy of their vaccination record to me. Please don't wait until the week before school starts to get these vaccines. Typically there will be a shortage of the vaccines, before school starts, because it is required of all 7th grade students in Texas.

The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools is requesting your assistance in taking the following 3 minute survey. The objective of the survey is to determine how best to share our accomplishments and progress, identifying the best avenues to share information, and increase participation.
The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools continues to award grants that help preserve and offer experiences, programs, equipment and education which support the educational goals in our district.

Lovejoy Country Run May 11
Join us for the 13th Annual Lovejoy Country Run on Saturday, May 11 at Lovejoy High School. This event benefits the Lovejoy athletic teams of LLI (Lovejoy Leopards, Inc.).
The 1K Fun Run starts at 7:30 AM and will take participants around the Lovejoy High School track. The 5k will take place on a certified course beginning at 8:00 AM. The 5K will start in the LHS courtyard, to Estates Parkway, down Rock Ridge Road, with the finish at the LHS courtyard. This is a great family event which will be followed by a delicious pancake breakfast hosted and served by the LLI booster clubs with generous donations by local businesses. Register today for some family fun and support our Lovejoy Athletic programs.

Class Description:
JD 1-Beginner tennis instruction for Elem/MS students-minimum 2nd grade
JD 2/3-Instruction for experienced Elementary, Intermediate, and Middle School players
JD ADV - Instruction for experienced Middle School and High School players
"Instructors reserve the right to move students to appropriate levels"
Goal of all Sessions: Focus will be on teaching fundamental tennis skills and rules. Individual instruction, match play and games will be provided in each session. Level of technical instruction will be geared toward specific age group.
Classes will be managed by Coaches Adam Cherry, Will Davis, Lou Hervey and staff. All coaches have extensive teaching experience. Both Coach Cherry and Davis played #1 for McMurry University and coach at Lovejoy High School. Cherry was 3A 2012 coach of the Year. Davis was 2009 conference player of the year. Coach Hervey has been directing the LJ JD program for 12 years.

Lovejoy Summer Musical Theatre Camps July 9-20
We are excited to announce our 2019 musical: Seussical KIDS!
Acting, choreography, lighting, costuming, set building, and painting are just some of the fun activities taking place in Lovejoy's Summer Musical Theatre Camps: Musical Theatre, Technical Theatre, and Intern Camp.
Students will work together to produce and perform Seussical KIDS. Students who attend will develop confidence, sharpen their musical and theatrical skills, and create wonderful memories along the way. Directed by Jessica Brewster, LHS Head Theatre Director, and musically directed by Anne Tracy, LHS Puster Elementary Music Specialist, this show is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

School Report Cards from 2017-18
I wanted to make you aware that the 2017-18 School Report Card (SRC) from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is available on the district website under "Quick Links" and then under "Required Postings" or directly at:
The same reports can be accessed on our campus website under the "About" tab and then selecting TEA School Campus Report Cards.
The SRC provides information on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), as well as information student enrollment, class size averages, and financial expenditures.
As you may recall, districts do not receive a SRC but the STAAR performance at each campus contributed to Lovejoy ISD being one of only four districts of the 1227 districts and charter schools in Texas to receive the highest rating on the state accountability system with an overall grade of "A" with a scale score of 97 out of 100 possible points.
