Mentoring Experiences in the Master of Science in Economic Development Program
All students in the economic development master program are required to complete an in-place or external 300-hour mentorship program. The purpose of this requirement for the students is to apply theory-to-practice. This is an opportunity to reflect on their daily work in economic development and improve productivity and performance. For those new to the field, it is an opportunity to be mentored by experts in the field. We thank the following economic development organizations for mentoring the following interns this summer.

Study of the Economic Impact of Restoring Rail Service Along the Coast
The TLNC, led by the Center of Logistics, Trade, and Transportation Research Professor, Dr. Yuanyuan Zhang, conducted an economic impact study for the Southern Rail Commission to explore passenger rail service restoration on the Gulf Coast. This study estimated the benefits of establishing an European-style rail service along the Gulf Coast and showed the economic growth at the state and county levels for Mississippi,  Alabama and Louisiana. The benefits detailed increased tourism spending, employment, value-added, and economic output resulting from expenditures related to railway construction, station renovation, rail service operations, and potential train car maintenance and assembly services provided by Talgo Incorporated of Spain. From 1993 through 2005 Amtrak operated an extension of the Gulf Coast Passenger Rail Service with night-time stops through the region, as part of a transcontinental Los Angeles-Florida run. For various reasons (including the route length and carrier operating conditions), successful on-time performance proved to be elusive, hindering the train's ridership and hence its financial performance. Additionally, the lack of day-time train service hindered ridership. Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, service has been suspended east of New Orleans.
Defense Diversification Case Study
Dr. Ed Bee, CEcD, Adjunct Professor in the College of Business and President of  Taimerica Management Company prepared a Harvard Business style case study,  Turning Lemons into Lemonade: The Closure of Kelly Air Force Base in order for students in the MSED program to better understand how economic developers can handle defense diversification. The report was prepared under contract for the Mississippi Defense Diversification Initiative with financial support from the Office of Economic Adjustment, Department of Defense. The situation in this case study was the impending closure of Kelly Air Force Base, which was the largest employer in San Antonio. The case puts the students in the shoes of the economic developer who was faced with the need to develop a transition strategy to help the community avoid the biggest economic downturn in its history.
