May 2019 eNews from CAP/Corbett
From our Executive Director
This past month, I had the privilege of attending the Adoption Exchange Association conference in Orlando, FL., where I had the opportunity to network with many other adoption organization professionals. With more than 100,000 youth in foster care available for adoption, the conference brought to light the urgent need to find permanency for America's waiting youth.

One of the most informative yet discouraging topics was the research pointing to the disproportion of waiting children of color and the need for like-families. I also became more cognizant of the needs of LGBTQ youth who often experience discrimination. They need accepting and understanding parents. Across the nation, our kids want to be in families like them.
To that end, all adoption agencies--individually and collectively--will begin a recruitment campaign to meet these needs and requests. I am excited to redouble our efforts to help our youth find forever homes with families that complement their heritage. Watch for future recruitment opportunities, and we hope you consider becoming involved with CAP!

Please call in to your senator to support agencies' right to place a child with any qualified parent no matter their gender preference or orientation.

And if you live in NYS, let your senator know if you support adoptees' rights to their original birth certificate when they turn 18.

Thank you,
Lauri McKnight

This 20-year-old young man enjoys hearts, balloons, music, and playing outside. He attends a school for children with special needs where his favorite class is gym. Craig benefits from a consistent, structured routine and likes familiarity and can work hard to complete tasks.

He loves to dance and listen to music – especially pop songs with a good beat! Craig has great charisma and thrives with one-on-one attention.

Can you give him a forever home? Are you the one? Email veronica@capbook.org or click here for more information.

Spotlight on CAP/Corbett Staff Member
David Carsel
David Carsel is our Finance and Operations Manager and has been on staff for 12 years.

This Western NY native lives in the town of Gates. A man of many talents, his varied hobbies are figure skating, collecting antiques, gardening, cooking, entertaining, traveling and volunteering. He has been in the finance world all his life. In his words:

"In 2007, I left the high pressure and long hours of the corporate financial world to provide more care to my aging mother. I came to CAP originally to provide financial and administrative duties, and now find myself fully immersed in the CAP mission. I still provide financial and administrative duties but also dedicate my time, ability, and support to all the many functions and events needed to keep CAP a successful and unique national organization. I get to meet and connect with many people throughout our community. It is a pleasure to wake up every morning and go to work, knowing what I accomplish today can benefit others less fortunate than me. I am so grateful that I love what I do, and I love everyone I work with."

Thank you, David!

P.S. If you have some volunteer time, David needs office assistance! Please email info@childrenawaitingparents.org or call (585) 232-5110.
