Lafayette Earth Day Celebration

The City of Lafayette, the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and Sustainable Lafayette will be presenting Lafayette’s 13th annual Earth Day Celebration from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 22nd at the Lafayette Library & Learning Center. The event is free. For more information click here .

Contra Costa Animal Services Year in Review

2017 was one of the best years ever for the animal services department. The volunteers, the staff, and the community really came together to save animal lives, serve the community and demonstrate what compassion in action looks like. Orinda State of the City Lunch

Orinda Rotary Club held their annual "State of the City" luncheon on March 7. The event featured Mayor Amy Worth, who provided an update on all of the latest projects and issues facing Orinda.

Prescription Drug Abuse Dose of Awareness Walk

The National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse (NCAPDA) held their Dose of Awareness Walk on March 25th at Heather Farms Park in Walnut Creek. This annual event represents the many individuals lost due to the misuse of prescription drugs. April Rovero, pictured at left with Supervisor Andersen, does tireless work to rally our community together to help end these needless deaths. The Board of Supervisors Recognizes March as

Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month

Drug overdose deaths are the leading cause of injury death in the United States and are highest among people aged 25 to 54 years.

In 2016, it is estimated that America’s opioid epidemic exacted at least $504 billion in economic costs related to health care, crime and lost work productivity.

Americans that have participated in DEA’s fourteen National Prescription Drug Take-Back Days have turned in more than 4,508 tons of medication over the past eight years at take-back sites available in all 50 states and U.S. territories. In Contra Costa County, during the October 2017 DEA sponsored Take-Back Day, 1,628.2lbs of unwanted or unused prescription medication were removed.

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors supports April 28, 2018 as “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day” as declared by the DEA and encourages residents to locate their local collection site and safely dispose of their accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs.

The Contra Costa Medication Education and Disposal Safety (MEDS) Coalition engages youth and adults, schools, businesses, faith-based communities, law enforcement, medical professionals and local and county government officials to participate in Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month activities to raise awareness about prescription drug dangers, promote safe medication storage and disposal and ensure Naloxone is available for those at high risk of overdose.

East Bay Innovation Awards

Supervisor Andersen helped announce the winner in the food category at the 2018 East Bay Innovations Awards Gala on March 29th at the Fox Theater in Oakland.Impossible Foods won the award for their innovation of a plant based heme molecule for meaty taste. Founder and scientist Pat Brown came up with the idea for the company’s eponymous meat substitute, the Impossible Burger, in 2009 when he realized that to really get people to eat less meat, he needed to create a consumer movement based on delicious and sustainable foods. Just as delicious and more responsibly-produced, the Impossible Burger is remarkably meat-like thanks to the inclusion of a soy-based substitute for heme, the molecule responsible for beef’s characteristically “meaty” flavor.

The East Bay is home to a wide variety of innovators in activities ranging from clean fuels to local cuisine, digital animation to medical devices, and much more. The East Bay Economic Development Alliance (East Bay EDA) partnered with the San Francisco Business Times to produce the sixth annual East Bay Innovation Awards as a way to celebrate and recognize the significant contributors to the East Bay’s unique culture and legacy of innovation. Nominations were sought in the following for companies and organizations in the following sectors: Advanced Manufacturing, Clean Tech, Education, Engineering and Design, Food, Information and/or Communication Technology, and Life Sciences. In addition, a Catalyst of the Year Award was presented to an individual, organization, or company that is currently transcending organizational boundaries to pull East Bay assets together in new ways and/or to catalyze new thinking or processes.

The award winners were: Catalyst Award; Contra Costa Transportation Authority/GoMentum Station, Advanced Manufacturing Award; Therm-x, Clean Tech Award; Smart Wires Inc., Education Award; PilotCity, Engineering and Design Award; Velodyne LiDAR, Food Award; Impossible Foods, Information/Communications Technology Award; Chirp Microsystems, Life Sciences Award; RefleXion Medical.

Street Smarts "Be Reel!" Video Contest Awards

The Street Smarts "Be Reel"! Video Contest gives San Ramon Valley middle school students an opportunity to promote traffic safety and their video production talent by producing public service announcements that educate and entertain their friends, family and community. This year, 206 students worked to create 67 entries.

The award ceremony was held on March 28th at the Danville Village Theatre.

"Intergalactic Injury", produced by Carson Foster, Max Begun and Will Candy from Charlotte Wood Middle School took home the Grand Prize for their entry in the Best Use of Special Effects/Animation.

Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Celebration and

Youth Hall of Fame Awards

The Board of Supervisor's 25th Annual Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Celebration and Youth Hall of Fame Awards was held on March 27th in Martinez.

San Ramon Senior Foundation Spring Fashion Show & Tea

Welcome the spring season with an afternoon of fashion, food and fun for all ages at the annual San Ramon Senior Foundation Spring Fashion Show and Tea. The event will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14th at the San Ramon Community Center at Central Park. Fabulous door prizes, prizes for the Best Hat, and opportunity drawings will be included. Registration deadline is Thursday, April 6, space pending. Tickets for guests of all ages are $25 per person/$30 after April 6 and must be purchased in-person at the Alcosta Senior and Community Center. Lafayette Police Chief Honored at Going Away Reception

New Chief Announced

Lafayette Police Chief Eric Christensen accepted a new position with the City of Oakley. Chief Christensen has done a great job for Lafayette, using both education and technology to reduce crime. Lafayette’s residential burglary rate has declined by more than half since Chief Christensen arrived.

Ben Alldritt has been chosen as the next Police Chief to follow Eric Christensen. Ben worked for the California Highway Patrol for four years before joining the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s office in 2006. After starting with the Sheriff, Ben worked in the Custody Services Bureau and then spent five years working patrol, traffic, and investigations for the Town of Danville. As a Sergeant, Ben supervised the Sheriff’s Investigations Unit and the Homicide Unit. Most recently, Ben has served as Watch Commander for Contra Costa County and is currently the Assistant Commander of the Patrol Division.

Danville PD Unveils 'You Are Not Alone' Program

The Danville Police Department announced a new program, one that is focused on members of the community who live alone. Called, 'You Are Not Alone (YANA),' the program features members of the Police Department's Volunteers In Police Service (VIPS) providing YANA checks to residents.

If you live alone in Danville, and would appreciate an occasional check on your well-being, you can sign up for the YANA program. You Are Not Alone is designed to provide a level of community and comfort to residents, and allow the VIPS to provide referrals for special services and programs for residents in need.

There is no minimum age requirement for YANA participation.

UC Master Gardeners 2018 Great Tomato Plant Sale

Thousands of heirloom tomato and other vegetable plants will be on sale at the Seventh Annual Great Tomato Plant Sale, Heirlooms of the World.

The sale will be held at the UC Master Gardeners Demo Garden in Walnut Creek (corner of North Wiget Lane and Shadelands Drive) from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday April 7th.

What makes the Great Tomato Plant Sale so special is that selections & recommendations are based on the local experience of UC Master Gardeners field-testing & growing these tomato varieties in their own Contra Costa gardens and in the Demo Garden. Many of the varieties are only available locally through UC Master Gardeners, and are impossible to find in local nurseries.

UC Master Gardeners will be available at the sale to advise on plant selection, site location and preparation, planting, fertilizing, pruning, and harvesting. Strategies to minimize plant disease and maximize production will also be discussed.

In 2018, they will be selling dozens of varieties of heirloom tomato plants from many worldwide locations, along with lots of tough, high-performing hybrid tomato varieties by popular demand. In addition, many numerous types of peppers, many unusual and hard-to find—from sweet and juicy to hot and spicy, as well as a wide variety of eggplants, tomatillos, herbs and other summer veggies will be available for sale.

All plants will be $3 each ( CASH OR CHECK ONLY, please! ); as always, the income helps support the community education work of the UC Master Gardener Program of Contra Costa County.

Contra Costa Housing Summit

Ensuring Opportunity Campaign to End Poverty in Contra Costa hosted the Contra Costa Housing Summit in Pleasant Hill on March 26th. Building on the progress made in 2017, and learning what can be done in 2018 to create inclusive, thriving communities throughout Contra Costa was discussed. Leaders from all sectors and regions of the county contributed to this important conversation.

At the conclusion of the summit, Supervisor Andersen and Supervisor John Gioia announced the launch of the Contra Costa Housing Advisory Council. Candace is honored to co-host the Council with Supervisor Gioia as they take on this leadership role in addressing Contra Costa’s housing needs.

Museum of San Ramon Valley Announces New Exhibits

The Museum of the San Ramon Valley in Danville is presenting the second phase of Gamblers and Dreamers: The Chinese and the Iron Road. This exhibit first opened at the Chinese Historical Museum in San Francisco and then was on exhibition at Stanford University.

The Chinese and the Iron Road provides a stunning visual understanding of the incredibly difficult work accomplished by Chinese laborers to build the railroad from California across the Sierras and ending at Promontory Point, Utah. Informational panels will show pictures of the work and life of the Chinese workers. Accompanying these photos is a story line that provides insights and details on the providing a deeper understanding of their lives. A reproduction of a typical railroad camp will be on display showing the how the workers actually lived.

The second part of the exhibit covers the story of Chinese immigration. It starts at the Gold Rush in 1849, covers the 12,000 men who built the railroad and continues on through the 19 ^th century. What happened to these people? Did they return to China? What jobs did they take? Did they settle in California? Did they settle in the San Ramon Valley? These and other questions complete this exhibit and give new insight into the Chinese that connected the west and helped it to prosper.

In addition, on Saturdays at the Museum, local Chinese Americans will share their insights and stories on the Chinese in California, past and present.

Redefining Mobility Summit

Supervisor Andersen delivered opening remarks at the fourth annual Redefining Mobility Summit on March 29th in San Ramon.

At the Summit, presented by GoMentum Station, Contra Costa Transportation Authority, Stantec, and Bishop Ranch, attendees heard from government and industry leaders about how innovative research and cutting-edge technology is redefining transportation.

Supervisor Andersen Visits City Councils for Input on

County Cannabis Ordinance

Supervisor Andersen and John Kopchik, County Director of Conservation and Development, visited Danville, San Ramon, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda in February and March to present the County's Preliminary Cannabis Ordinance Framework and gather feedback on possible cannabis regulations within the unincorporated areas of the County. Candace is presenting to the Orinda City Council in the photo above.

The city councils were unanimous in their desire to keep commercial cannabis activities away from their city limits and most only wanted to see residential indoor plants rather than outdoor plantings as outlined in Proposition 64.

Walnut Creek is the only city in District 2 that is considering permitting outdoor personal cultivation on single family residential properties. They are also considering permitting up to two non-storefront delivery operations based in Walnut Creek for medicinal marijuana only, and permitting medicinal marijuana delivery-only operations from locations outside the City to locations within the City, from authorized delivery providers. The Council is considering prohibiting the following commercial operations: retail operations; commercial cultivation; manufacturing; and testing. Walnut Creek plans to bring these items to the Planning Commission prior to final City Council consideration before the end of June.

Danville State of the Town and Annual Awards Ceremony

Mayor Newell Arnerich presented an update on the Town's projects, finances and general issues at the annual State of the Town luncheon.

The annual Community Awards were presented to Color Bundles Art Studio for Business of the Year, Dr. Jerome Potozkin for Business Person of the Year, Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area for Charitable Organization of the Year, Chris McCrary for Citizen of the Year and Shirley Jacks for Employee of the Year.

Young Children's Issues Forum

Local elected officials, business leaders, early childhood teachers, families, and community advocates joined together on March 17th the Contra Costa County Young Children's Issues Forum. The forum provided a day of dialogue about proposed statewide initiatives, public policy trends and their impact on investments in early education and workforce pathways for teachers.

The annual community event is sponsored and organized by the Contra Costa County Local Planning and Advisory Council for Early Care and Education (LPC) and coordinated by the Contra Costa County Office of Education.

Orinda Honors Local Citizens

James Wright, pictured here with Supervisor Andersen, received the Orinda Association's William Penn Mott Jr. Environmental Award on March 11th at the Orinda Country Club. He was honored for his work restoring and renovating The Old Yellow House at 209 Orinda Way. The Old Yellow House, originally built in 1890, had been vacant since 1966 until Wright purchased the property in 2012 from Ezra Nelson. The Nelson family bought the property in 1918 and Ezra’s son, David, still lives next door. Wright chose the property to show-case his skills developing geo-solar passive houses.

At the same event, the Orinda Community Foundation presented Janet Riley with the 2017 Orinda Association Citizen of the Year Award. Riley’s volunteer history in Orinda spans over 28 years, with intense focus on Orinda schools, the Church of Santa Maria and the Orinda Garden Club. Riley spent 10 years working with Orinda schools, starting with the Sleepy Hollow Parents Club, moving on to Orinda Intermediate School Parents Club, and serving as president of the Educational Foundation of Orinda (EFO). During Riley’s tenure at EFO, the organization raised nearly $3 million.

On March 21st, the San Ramon Valley Soroptimists held their annual awards ceremony honoring women who have dedicated themselves to volunteering and serving their school and community; to women who have used their position to open broad avenues of support in education, health or service areas supporting women; and to women whose primary financial responsibility for her family is obtaining the necessary education to improve her employment status and standard of living for her family.

Public Works Department Honors its Female Engineers

This year, the Contra Costa County Public Works Department celebrated its female engineers on International Women’s Day. It is important for young girls to see that they, too, can excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, (S.T.E.M.) and come away with great careers.

Throughout the day photos and brief descriptions of their wonderful female engineers were shared through Public Works’ social media pages; Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The dedicated and talented female engineers work in various divisions throughout Public Works. They represent Design/Construction, Flood Control, Transportation, Maintenance and Engineering Services.

Join Public Works in honoring Jenna, Adelina, Deborah, Nancy, Caroline, Michelle, Oksana, Homira, Jocelyn, Mary and Allison and the many other female engineers who make a positive impact in Contra Costa County and beyond.

AAUW 18th Annual Garden Tour

The 18th Annual Danville-Alamo-Walnut Creek American Association of University Women (AAUW) Garden Tour will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 11th and 12th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m. AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

Outstanding gardens in Alamo and Danville will be featured. Among the many highlights: a sculptor’s garden containing fascinating basalt rocks and original artwork, a garden that features garden rooms with extensive and diverse plantings created by a self-described “hoardaculturalist” and another garden with spectacular views and an incredible garden on an acre-sized hill plot. Flowers make us all happy but one owner has used that as motivation for her update. Please plan on attending, and bring a mom!

Red Cross Month in Contra Costa County

The Red Cross responded to nearly 50,000 home fires in 2017, providing casework assistance to help 76,000 families recover.

March was American Red Cross Month, a special time to recognize and thank the Red Cross volunteers and donors who give of their time and resources to help members of the community.

The Red Cross depends on local heroes to deliver help and hope during a disaster. The Board of Supervisors' applaud the heroes here in Contra Costa County who give of themselves to assist their neighbors when they need a helping hand.

Across the country and around the world, the American Red Cross responds to disasters big and small. It collects about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply, provides 24-hour support to military members, veterans and their families, teaches millions lifesaving skills such as lifeguarding and CPR and through its Restoring Family Links program, connects family members separated by crisis, conflict or migration.

Contra Costa County dedicates the month of March to all those who support the American Red Cross mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies. Our community depends on the American Red Cross, which relies on donations of time, money and blood to fulfill its humanitarian mission.

Lafayette Garden Club "Artful Gardens Tour"

The Lafayette Garden Club will hold its first garden tour in many years on Saturday, May 12, from 10 am to 3 pm at a series of five unique, private gardens in Lamorinda. The tour, Artful Gardens, also will include a pop-up market and a plant sale. “The tour can give you good ideas of what you might want to do in your garden, to learn about new plants, and to have a fun day out with friends and family,” said Laurie Callaway, tour co-chair and, a certified garden designer. The tour includes a sculpture garden with new discoveries around every corner, a hillside garden with wit and whimsy, a lush paradise with a meandering stream, an expansive family retreat designed for social and intimate gatherings, and an artist’s personal creation filled with extensive plant varieties and rustic antiques. Each garden reflects the unique personality of the owner and displays a range of the artistic and practical as well as the sophisticated and playful. When asked why the garden club, which started in 1970, decided to have a tour this spring after a long absence, Callaway said, “We felt it was an opportunity for members to get involved and have some fun.” Tour proceeds will benefit local schools and Lafayette beautification projects. Danville UnWaste Event Set for April 28

The Town of Danville sponsors periodic recycling drop-off events, where residents can bring their unused items to the Danville Park & Ride, located near the intersection of Sycamore Valley Road and Camino Ramon.

At the April 28, 2018 event, residents can bring used electronics, as well as household items, such as hair dryers, to drop off between 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Items do NOT have to be in good working order to be dropped off.

Most items are free to recycle, however larger appliances such as freezers, refrigerators and water heaters have a $40 fee, smaller appliances have a $20 fee and microwave ovens can be dropped off for a $5 fee.

Annual Seasonal Farmers' Market Open in Orinda

District 2 Cities and County Offers Residents’ Choice of

Electrical Energy Providers

You have likely received a notice in the mail from MCE about their program offering residents and businesses more choice in renewable electrical service.

Beginning this month, MCE will become the primary electricity provider in Concord, Danville, Martinez, Moraga, Oakley, Pinole, Pittsburg, San Ramon, and unincorporated Contra Costa County. MCE already provides service to the Contra Costa residents and businesses of El Cerrito, Lafayette, San Pablo, Richmond, and Walnut Creek.

MCE, a not-for-profit public electricity provider, offers customers a choice of additional levels of renewable electricity at a comparable rate to PG&E. Due to State law, when a City joins a Community Choice Energy provider such as MCE, all customers are automatically migrated to the new provider. Electric service customers in the cities/communities named above will enroll automatically in MCE’s 50% renewable Light Green service. However, during the first 60 days, service customers can opt out of MCE at no charge and remain with PG&E’s 33% renewable electricity service.

The Rover by Aphra Behn is a bawdy, funny comedy that has entertained audiences for centuries.

The show is scheduled to run from April 13th through the 29th; Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., Sundays at 2:00 p.m. at The Village Theatre, 233 Front Street in Danville.

It’s Carnival time in Naples. A band of banished English cavaliers is looking for adventure and love, and so are the women they meet. Who's chasing whom? Everyone meets their match. Full of seduction, sword fights, and bawdy humor, The Rover is credited with launching the phrase “the battle of the sexes.”

March Board Actions

Ever wonder what your Supervisor does at the Board of Supervisors meeting held on most Tuesdays? Here are some of the board actions from the month of March which impact the residents of District 2:

Recognized March 2018 as National Social Workers' Month in Contra Costa County.

Recognized March 2018 as American Red Cross Month in Contra Costa County.

Recognized March 2018 as Prescription Drug Awareness Month in Contra Costa County.

Approved the Tice Valley Linear Park Project and authorized the Public Works Director, or designee, to advertise the Project, Walnut Creek area.

Adopted Resolution No. 2018/81 approving and authorizing the Public Works Director, or designee, to partially close a portion of southbound lanes of Jones Road between Coggins Drive and Harvey Drive, on March 13, 2018 through August 8, 2019, 24 hours per day, for the purpose of construction access and to create safe area to unload trucks with overhead crane and to construct frontage improvements, Walnut Creek area.

Adopted Ordinance No. 2018-07 to prohibit smoking in all dwelling units in any multi-unit residence and to prohibit smoking in all guest rooms in any hotel or motel; and directed the Health Services Department to report back to Family and Human Services Committee on the implementation of the ordinance as part of its regular Annual Report on the Secondhand Smoke Protections Ordinance.

Accepted the 2017 Annual Report for the Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County (AC5).

Accepted the Health Services Report on Implementation of Tobacco Control Ordinances to Protect Youth from Tobacco Influences.

Adopted Resolution No. 2018/98 recognizing Don Jenkins as the 2018 Lafayette Citizen of the Year, as recommended by Supervisor Andersen.

Adopted Resolution No. 2018/104 recognizing the 2018 Youth Hall of Fame Honorees of the 25th Annual Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Celebration.

Adopted Resolution No. 2018/107 recognizing Service of Deputy Chief Derek Krause upon his retirement from the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District, as recommended by Supervisor Andersen.

Reappointed Joseph Motta to the Appointee 3 seat, Steve Nelson to the Appointee 5 seat, Diane Barley to the Appointee 7 seat and Clark Johnson to the Appointee 9 seat on the Alamo Police Services Advisory Committee, as recommended by Supervisor Andersen.

Appointed Ally Fattore to the 1st Alternate seat on the County Service Area P-5 Citizens Advisory Committee, as recommended by Supervisor Andersen.

Authorized Contra Costa County's participation as a member of the Bay Area Urban Manufacturing Initiative, a regional public-private partnership that supports manufacturing as an opportunity to retain and increase the supply of middle-class jobs in the Bay Area.

Accepted and Declared the results of the Special Mail Election conducted on March 6, 2018 on file in the Contra Costa Elections Division for the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Measure A and Diablo Community Services District Measure B.
