New Modern Bus Shelters Coming to Westchase District
Sleek and modern: This rendering illustrates the new standard for METRO bus shelters in Westchase District, coming soon to Walnut Bend Lane and Westheimer Road.

If you're a regular METRO bus customer riding transit throughout Houston, you probably pay a lot of attention to the bus shelters. Very soon, even non-transit riders will notice the shelters in Westchase District. A contemporary, newly designed shelter - both functional and attractive - will soon be coming to Westchase District.

As part of its Walnut Bend reconstruction, Westheimer streetscapes and Elmside/Woodchase Side Path projects, Westchase District is completely re-designing and upgrading the current shelters. The new shelters are made of aluminum and glass, while the seat blocks will be made of a concrete blend with a glossy finish. The new shelters will be installed at 37 locations on Walnut Bend, Westheimer, Elmside and Woodchase. Another three METRO bus stops will be equipped with the custom-made seat blocks. Read More

Westchase District Public Safety Series - Robbery Prevention
Westchase District Public Safety Series - Robbery Prevention

With the holidays around the corner, Don McKinney, Vice President of Public Safety for Westchase District, says don't let you guard down. As more people go out shopping and get busy with holiday-related errands, McKinney urges us to be aware of our surroundings at all times. Another important tip he shares is do not argue or fight with someone robbing you. "Any amount of money is not worth personal injury," said McKinney. McKinney's video is the second in a series on public safety awareness that has been shared with the Westchase District community. Please stay tuned for upcoming episodes where McKinney will cover more helpful topics about public safety.

Huge Need During Holidays to Support WHAM as it Serves Families With Meals, Toys, Financial Assistance

The theme of West Houston Assistance Ministries' (WHAM) holiday campaign is to "Give the Gift of Hope". WHAM wants to bring food to the tables of families and children going through hardship. The organization hopes to provide 525 families with gift cards to purchase their meals and 1,000 kids (up to age 9) with toys. Gift cards for youth (ages 10-18) will also be provided. Without WHAM's help, many of these families and individuals would not be able to afford a Thanksgiving and Christmas meal, much less gifts for their children. "While many have lost jobs, have had work hours cut, don't have extra income, a lot have lost loved ones who helped bring food to the table," said Mercedes Santos-Garay, WHAM's director of communications and development. Support WHAM during the holidays with your donation.

On a related note, WHAM's Resale Store has an urgent need for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering in the store, please complete the volunteer sign up form. You can also contact Ella Clark, volunteer coordinator, at 832-413-5983 or via email

Volunteers needed:  In preparation for a busy holiday season and lots of customers, WHAM's Resale Store at 3100 Rogerdale Road and Meadowglen Lane needs volunteers for customer service.

A Marketplace for Holiday Gifts, Meals

Spice up the stocking stuffers: Put a ribbon on it and gift it: sauce from Chilequiles will be like no other.
It's possible to spend time at the Farmers Market and not find something for yourself. But why not use the time to shop here for the holidays?

That's what makes the market experience even more rewarding because you can pick up something for someone else you'd like to thank or who has a special place in your life. After all, it's been a tough year. And, giving someone else a gift is sure to add joy. From stocking stuffers, gift box sets, to gifts for the host of holiday parties, the possibilities abound at the Farmers Market.

There are relatives, from fathers-in-law to grandfathers, who like to snack on pecans, naturally raw or cinnamon-roasted. You may know an at-home chef who would welcome a jar of sauce from Chilesquiles or Comatli. Not sure about what to give the boss? Lakonia Imports Greek Sampler in a hand-crafted wooden box will hit the mark with Greece's finest olives, herbs and spice blends, and fine olive oils. Is your aunt a fan of jams? An 8-ounce jar of mango & papaya from ABJ Farms will make you her favorite niece. Don't want to come empty handed to the holiday dinner party? You're in luck with One Two Three, Etc. and Houston Winery - these vendors' fresh bread and fun wines will earn you an invite back every year.

Don't forget the boss or a colleague with Lakonia Imports.

If you find yourself hosting the holiday lunch or dinner and all of cooking that goes with it, then PEAS Farm is your stop for vegetables and ingredients that are among the freshest you can buy anywhere. Pick up something on Thursday from 3 - 6 p.m. to make a holiday warming, gift-giving impression.
