We can't wait for summer 2019!

Fully Staffed and Super Excited for Summer 2019!

Watch this video to hear our new Academic Program Director Ariel and third grader Brandon discuss what they're most looking forward to during summer 2019. They have a lot to be excited about! We are delighted to announce that we are now fully staffed for this summer, with 20 new and returning teachers and staff! By the numbers:  seven are returning to Horizons from prior summers,  two are SFFS alums and previous Horizons' volunteers, six are currently pursuing their Master of Education and teaching credential through the BATTI and USFseven teach in SFUSD, and ten are bilingual in Spanish. We're excited to work together to inspire our students in the classroom, the pool, and on field trips including the Marin Headlands, kayaking, the Exploratorium, and a ropes course! Read more about our team here.

We can't wait to see all of our returning students and families next week at our annual Returning Family Orientation and Fun Day on May 18, and all our new kids and their families on June 1st for Horizons' annual New Family Orientation at SFFS!

New Faces on the Horizons at SFFS Board for 2019/20

Horizons is delighted to be welcoming four new members onto its board of directors for 2019/20: Katie Eller, Lynda Sullivan, Sangita Forth, and Jim Hansen.

We are deeply grateful to the four individuals (including three founding board members!) whose term of service is coming to an end this Spring:  Gwen Rino, Dan Hirsch, Jenna Goldman, and Kelly McKane. Horizons' success to date would have been impossible without the hard work and many contributions each has made to support our program, students, staff, and families!
Horizons at SFFS Loves Our National Service Members!

As our 2018-19 AmeriCorps VISTA member's year of service comes to a close, Horizons is reflecting with gratitude on the ways our orga nization has benefited from VISTAs.  Our program was fortunate to receive a full-time VISTA at almost no cost to the program starting in 2017 through Horizons National. Blackberrie Eddins has been an incredible asset during this past year,
streamlining and improving our database, website,  and enrollment systems, writing successful grants, and leading maker activities for our students! She is great with numbers and systems, and always has a smile on her face and a good story to tell. We know Blackberrie will make a wonderful doctor and wish her much happiness and luck as she heads off to medical school in the fall!

This June, Liam McCarthy will become the newest VISTA member to join Horizons' team just in time for summer. A current AmeriCorps teaching fellow with Citizen Schools, Liam was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated from Boston College with a degree in English and Secondary  Education.  We are happy Liam and Blackberrie will overlap for a couple of weeks in June and we look forward to continuing to build Horizons' impact and capacity with his help in the year to come!
You're invited...

...to visit Horizons at SFFS this summer! Sign up is now open for Tuesday morning tours and invites were sent this month for Horizons' annual Visitor's Day and parent panel on July 19. Please email Executive Director Abby Rovner if you would like to arrange an alternate time to visit. We hope you'll join us!
Summer Learning Matters!
Summer Learning

Lack of access to high quality summer learning opportunities is a serious issue for low-income San Francisco families. Research has shown that summer learning loss during elementary school is responsible for up to two thirds of the difference in academic achievement between low-income and higher-income high schoolers. By preventing summer learning loss, Horizons at SFFS makes a significant impact on the children who need it most!

A fond farewell and many thanks

Many thanks and happy trails to Veronica, who joined Horizons' team as our first AmeriCorps VISTA member two years ago and stayed on as our first Development and Communications Coordinator this past year. After making many positive contributions to Horizons' youth volunteer program, annual event, office systems, and communications and fundraising efforts, she's off to new adventures. We wish Veronica the best of luck in all her future endeavors!

Dear Horizons Community,
It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to a place that has been such a special part of my life for the past two years. Working with Horizons and SFFS staff, families, board, and the larger community has been an immense privilege. Thank you all for your kindness, wisdom, and smiles. I will miss you! - Veronica

Please help us spread the word about this exciting opportunity to be Horizons' next Development and Communications Coordinator. Join our team, share your skills and make a difference in the lives of Horizons' wonderful students!
How time flies! Our founding class of kindergarteners are in middle school this year. What fun it has been to see them grow!
