TOWN OF NORTH SMITHFIELD
April 20th, 2018 Edition

Message from Town Administrator
Gary Ezovski
Over my almost forty years of activity as an active citizen of North Smithfield, I have witnessed many outstanding volunteer efforts by neighbors from all parts of town. Perhaps those for whom I will always hold the highest regard were our former volunteer fire and rescue people. The reason for that is because those of us who have served on boards, commissions and committees usually have an opportunity to schedule the meetings or project activities we found important to support. But the volunteer fire and rescue folks of years ago dropped whatever they were doing in the instant when a pager or radio went off in the middle of the day or night and they rushed out to a location to handle whatever was happening. That was a commitment to community that is very hard to match. Because so many people work out of town today along with some other realities, we no longer have or need that level of volunteer activity, but we still have people who are committed to making our town the best it can be and make a dramatic difference in what we are as a community. A continuing example of that is the upcoming
Clean and Green Day next Saturday April 28.
Based on the continuing leadership of a few people, I believe the largest single gathering of volunteers that happens every year to keep our town
“Clean and Green”
will happen again for the 16
th time on the 28
th of April. It is a great example of who we are and the values we are committed to uphold. The
Clean and Green leadership is hoping to break their all-time record of 450 volunteers participating and 7.6 tons of material collected. The details of the day’s activity can be seen at
https://www.nsmithfieldri.org/clean-green-day-2018 The long range weather forecast looks like temperatures will be around 60 degrees so mother nature appears ready to help. Maybe you can be the 451
st or even the 500
th volunteer who gets us to find a few more pounds! Please consider signing up this week so the team can be prepared for all who participate.
And, if you do join in for
Clean and Green Day, please know that just as with every other person who volunteers for that, Pumpkin Fest, the planning board, the food pantry, zoning board, animal shelter, personnel board, juvenile hearing board, parks and recreation, athletic association, little league and soccer, scouting programs, MEANS, historic district, xpress football, sewer commission, heritage association or so many others, your work is appreciated and valued. That is our town! This is our town!

We are pleased to announce
North Smithfield's
16th Annual Clean & Green Day
Saturday, April 28, 2018
Each year we assemble a large group of volunteers from North Smithfield and surrounding towns who have a mutual interest in reducing litter, and thus improving the visual landscape. While litter cleanup is the primary objective of our Clean & Green Day, this event offers additional benefits in promoting anti-litter awareness, recycling and continued education.
Save the date and come April 28
th
to participate in one of RI's largest community clean-up efforts. This year we plan to see as many as 500 volunteers.
Our "Hands-on cleanup" approach gives volunteers satisfaction in making a difference, as well as a sense of community by joining their neighbors in a much larger town-wide project. The experience often motivates volunteers to learn and do more in the interest of recycling and our environment year-round.
The clean-up provides a great bonding opportunity for families and organizations to help together. Scout troops and students are able to earn community service hours.
Volunteers can leave comments and questions, or pre-register for the event by using the Clean & Green link available
Donations can be made to "Town of North Smithfield/Clean & Green Day" P.O. Box 248, Slatersville, RI 02876.
