May/June Newsletter
Many thanks to the faculty who have helped make the first year of the Centre for Teaching Excellence a success. Our workshops, courses, consultations, awards, and Symposium were made possible by participation and engagement of so many faculty who continue to expand the boundaries of teaching in higher education. Thank you! Notably, this year's Teaching and Learning Symposium was the best yet with over 174 people registered. We are also excited to have two new educational developers starting in August to support faculty. Stay tuned for more details!

This year, we collaborated with BCcampus on two projects: (1) the K-12 transitions project looking at the new BC curriculum and how post-secondary institutions can prepare for incoming high school students and (2) a faculty professional development portal project developing an online resource for faculty. As I start my duties as co-chair of the BC Teaching and Learning Council (BCTLC) I am hopeful that we will continue to contribute to Province-wide teaching and learning initiatives.

Finally, I wanted to extend my gratitude and thanks to Cyndi Banks, Bettina Boyle, Derek Murray, Nancy Nowlan and Mary Giovannetti for their dedication and support of the CTE. As we head into vacation time for many faculty, I wish you rest, relaxation and reinvigoration (a different type of the 3Rs).

BCcampus Teaching and Learning Book Club: Reading into Action.

This Fall BCcampus and Post-Secondary Institutions are launching a Teaching and Learning Book Club. We will be reading How Learning Works by Ambrose, Bridges, DiPietro, Lovett, and Norman. The plan is to meet every 2 weeks in the Fall with a facilitated session on each chapter impacts our teaching. If you want to get a head start on the reading, email Laura MacKay for a copy of the book or check the Library.
Place-based Learning with Roy Jantzen
The final day of the Teaching and Learning Symposium brought us to the Upper Seymour Valley to learn more about the region in which our campus in located. Roy Janzten shared information on the ecology of the area and how he incorporates the environment into his classes.
We even had a curious bear encounter which had us retreating to the bus!

The role of Place-Based Education has gained importance in higher education in recent years.
Place-based Education is
"An educational approach that uses all aspects of the local environment, including local cultural and historical information, as well as the natural and built environment as the integrating context for learning" (Sobel, 2015).
