Movie Nights in the Park 2018
Join us for our movie night in the park series starting on Friday, June 15 for a free screening of Universal Pictures, Despicable Me 3 and Pixar's, Coco on Friday, July 20! The movies will start at sundown. Summer Movie Night Series will be held at Orange Memorial Park, on the field behind the Joseph A. Fernekes Recreation Building. There will be a concession stand available with light snacks and refreshments by the Friends of the Parks and Recreation. Including pre-movie entertainment. This is a FREE event for all ages. New Registration System!

The Parks and Recreation Department is launched our new online registration system for Summer 2018. Registration is now open. Check out the new online registration site at: www.ssf.net/rec and set up your account today! Special features include:

June Bike Challenge!
Entire Month of June

Hop on the bike and see how far you can go in  20 minutes! This challenge will last the entire month of June. At the end of the month, we will see who biked the furthest in 20-minute time cap and award prizes!

The exercise bike is located in the 3rd-floor at the Magnolia Center at 601 Grand Avenue in South San Francisco. Please check-in with staff before use. Log in your times on the binder in the exercise room.

No pre-registration is necessary.  Please note all drop-in fees are cash only and exact change is suggested. The 2018 Jack Drago Cultural Arts
Commission Youth Art Scholarship
Enjoy a Selection of Works Created by this Talented Young Artist!
The Cultural Arts Commission was pleased to award the 2018 Jack Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship to Ziqi Li of South San Francisco High School.
 
Ziqi Li's preferred art form is pen and ink drawing and acrylic painting. She has applied to UC Merced and the State Universities of San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento and San Diego. She plans to study civil, mechanical or aerospace engineering. She also plays badminton and tennis, and enjoys listening to music and viewing anime. Her future art goal is to work in movie or game design animation. Selections of her artwork will be on exhibit in the Municipal Services Building atrium display window from mid-June through mid-July.
 
The Jack Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship was established for the purpose of providing eligible graduating seniors from the South San Francisco Unified School District continued education in the visual arts. The scholarship is financed exclusively by community donations.
 
General Art Show and Karaoke Night a Resounding Success!
Award-winning Fine Art on Exhibit in the MSB Atrium Display Window Don't miss viewing award-winning art from May's General Art Show. Visitors to this popular exhibit enjoyed exceptionally fine art, including works in watercolor, oil painting, graphics, and in other 2 dimensional media. Twenty pieces received awards in five categories. In addition, for the first time, the Cultural Arts Commission sponsored a Karaoke Night in conjunction with the Friday art show opening. Twenty-one enthusiastic participants sang their hearts out in the cabaret-like ambiance. Visitors were unequivocally delighted about this new performing cultural arts event.

Celebrate the summer with your friends at the Cultural Arts Barbeque! Admission includes a delicious grilled lunch, tasty dessert treats, fun activities for all and a silent auction for a marvelous array of gift items. Only service animals are allowed to enter the facility. Tickets will be available for online purchase at SSF Web Registration on Friday, June 22, as well as by visiting the Parks & Recreation Department office at 33 Arroyo Drive (650) 829-3800 or the Parks Division office at 550 North Canal (650) 829-3837.
 
Proceeds will benefit South San Francisco cultural arts programs. Check the "Cultural Arts News & Events" webpage at www.ssf.net/rec for updated information.
 
Parks 11 Program: Update!

You may have heard previous updates on the Parks 11 Program, which will invest six million dollars to improve parks and sports fields over the next several years.  This park investment program includes improvements to the following locations:
  • Orange Memorial Park softball field
  • Orange Memorial Park baseball field
  • Buri Buri Park baseball field and basketball court
  • Southwood baseball field
  • Alta Loma baseball field, tennis courts, and playground
  • Avalon baseball field
  • Hillside soccer and softball field
  • Sellick Park playground
  • Gardiner Park playground
  • Newman and Gibbs playground
  • Dundee Park playground
Several City staff have also met with landscape architects and project managers to kick off the design phase for the improvements noted above at Orange Memorial Park, Buri Buri Park, Avalon Park, Hillside Field, Sellick Park and Gardiner Park. Design for each of these projects will begin in the coming months. During this design period, we are excited to offer opportunities for residents, park neighbors, and sports league stakeholders to provide their input to inform the scope of the improvements. Outreach dates will be announced in the coming months.

Now Taking Picnic & Building Reservations for 2018

The Parks and Recreation Department is taking reservations for indoor facility rentals and picnic sites. We offer several halls and meetings spaces for nearly any event, including corporate meetings, weddings, dances, birthday celebrations, and banquets. Picnic rental reservations for 2018 are now being accepted.

Ravi Chandra is a psychiatrist and Buddhist who values conversation, relationship, and their ultimate goals: love and the feeling of society. And he thinks we are in danger. Facebuddha: Transcendence in the Age of Social Networks , is a rich modern memoir of relationship online and off, a state-of-the-art exploration of psychological research about social media, and an engaging introduction to Buddhism.
Ravi Chandra, M.D. is a psychiatrist and writer in San Francisco, and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Facebuddha: Transcendence in the Age of Social Networks is his full-length nonfiction debut, and is the winner of the 2018 Nautilus Books Silver Award Winner for Religion/Spirituality of Eastern Thought category .

Drink to the Founding Fathers while learning about their favorite pubs in Adrian Covert's presentation on his book Taverns of the American Revolution.
 
Taverns of the American Revolution presents the boozing and schmoozing that went on in some of America's most historic watering holes, revealing the crucial role these public houses played as meeting places for George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and their fellow Founding Fathers in the struggle for independence. More than a retelling of the Revolutionary War, this unique volume takes readers on a tour of more than twenty surviving colonial taverns; features period artwork, maps, and cocktail recipes; and is filled with trivia and anecdotes about the drinking habits of colonial Americans.
 
Adrian Covert is a San Francisco-based author, artist, and Vice President of Public Policy for the Bay Area Council, a regional business and economic planning non-profit organization. Covert studied political science at San Francisco State University and enjoys old bars and playing baseball for the Sunset Nobles. He lives in the Mission District with his wife, Rachel, and their dog, Buddy.
