Recently the social work profession adopted updated ethics standards, regulatory guidelines, and practice standards, especially related to practitioners' use of technology. Dr. Reamer will explain these and explore high-risk ethical issues and practical strategies designed to protect clients and practitioners. Key topics will include novel forms of service delivery and ways to communicate with clients, management and storage of electronic information, boundary issues, dual relationships, conflicts of interest, confidentiality, privileged communication, informed consent, clients' rights, documentation, and termination of services.
Cost: $125 for NASW members, $160 for non-members

Legislators Seek Testimony from School Social Workers
Social workers have another opportunity to testify before NJ Lawmakers on gun violence and school safety issues.
It is critically important that social workers' voices are heard in this discussion
. Legislators have specifically asked to hear from school social workers.
The third and final hearing is set for
3 p.m. on April 23
at the Paul Robeson Campus Center, part of
Rutgers University-Newark
.
The event is open for public comment.

New Journal Article Reviews The Costs of Child Poverty
A recent journal
article in the journal Social Work Research discusses the overall economic costs associated with child poverty in our country. A summary of the research can be found
here.
According to the study's author, "impoverished children grow up having fewer skills and are thus less able to contribute to the productivity of the economy [...]
It is estimated that for every dollar spent on reducing childhood poverty, the country would save at least $7 with respect to the economic costs of poverty."

Goals of Care Coalition of NJ (GOCCNJ), an "interdisciplinary partnership of leaders representing healthcare providers and systems, government agencies, and community organizations," is
dedicated to encouraging patients, providers, and family members to talk about what type of care they want when facing a serious illness and to document their preferences in a care plan.

NASW Seeks Resolution with CMS Regarding PQRS Negative Payments for LCSWs
In a
letter to the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), NASW CEO, Angelo McClain, requested a review the 2018 negative payment penalties to clinical social workers to determine if they were inappropriately penalized for not using measures beyond their scope of practice.
NASW also submitted
comment to CMS on the new Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) which will replace PQRS in 2019, requesting that the standard MIPS formula be reconsidered as the evaluation tool for clinical social workers.
