A Peek Inside Our Classrooms
First and Second Grade Hebrew
Mrs. Alla Fligelman
afligelman@silveracademypa.org

It is almost the end of the school year, and it is time to learn about Israel and Jewish History. This unit of study will help us deepen our connection to Israel and Jerusalem. We have the opportunity to learn Jewish History with the help of stories and songs, and an animated, speaking map of Israel.

Ariot, the Hebrew speaking lion, is teaching us the unique, patriotic symbols of Israel. We recognize the unique characteristics of the emblems, and the special songs we learn in Kita Alef accompany our learning. Students in second grade also love playing a riddle game to help them remember the patriotic symbols.

In addition, we are learning about the unique celebrations and activities that take place in Israel and our school during Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel Independence Day). Students compared their own personal birthdays to Israel’s birthday by creating birthday cards for both. They decided what special wishes are appropriate for the country we love, and how those wishes compare to the birthday wishes sent to our friends and family.

Following this week's special holiday events, second grade will be learning about the history of the land of Israel and the Jewish nation. Using our classroom reading books as a guide, students will identify various periods in Jewish history on the Jewish timeline and determine if the Jewish people were in the land of Israel during those times. Students will use this information to help discern the emotion felt by the people in the land of Israel.

Today was an exciting day in our school as we celebrated Yom Haazmaut. First and Second graders presented a special dance with Israeli flags and the tfilah for the peace of Israel!

Happy birthday Israel!
Third Grade General Studies
Mr. Gil Cornwell
gcornwell@silveracademypa.org

As Spring weather is upon us, the flowers have begun to push their buds. Similarly, the third graders have started writing a narrative story in which they are "pushing" their writing skills to create something special.  Yes, they will create!  These students will use three components important for such a task: the plot, characters, and the setting. These are some of the components that are important, as they add color and enrich their stories, just like the colors of plants add interest and beauty.  Developing this writing process is not easy for a 3rd grader!

Students began by choosing a main idea from a list of 59 story starters, and from there, they created a story plot. After making a graphic organizer, each student wrote freely to begin his or her story. Their stories present a problem and a solution.

Character development has been an important part of each student's story. Some of the students are using fictional characters, while others are telling their stories through people they have known.  The students have enjoyed telling their stories through some very colorful characters!

The students have also been working to create and describe interesting settings for their stories. The setting may be indoors or outdoors, described simply or in detail.

During the writing process, students have also been editing the stories of their peers. Recently, students have begun typing their final draft. I hope you have an opportunity to read some of the stories by these "budding" young authors!

How about being asked to cook dinner for your own party?

That is what we are doing at The Silver Academy! Please join in honoring Cheryl and Norman Gras at our Jewish Community Foundation of Central Pennsylvania’s Annual Donor Recognition dinner for our heroes, on Tuesday, May 8, at 5:30 pm.

Aside from feeding all of our students every day, Norman is the co-president of our board of directors. He also assists with the Create a Jewish Legacy program, helping to make The Silver Academy the top Jewish Day School in the country with the most letters of intent in the first two years. Norman chaired our search for the head of school last year too, and now we have Deb Freeburn.

Cheryl is co-chairing our spring fundraiser, Oz Pearlman, which will be held May 31 at the Scottish Rite at 7:30 pm. She is rallying the team and bringing in lots of new ads and energy.

The Silver Academy is a better place because Cheryl and Norman Gras are our superheroes, always ready to lend a hand, offer a kind word and a smile, but most importantly, offer a little nosh when you are hungry.
