"From my point of view, which is that of a storyteller, I see your life as already artful, waiting, just waiting and ready for you to make it art."
-Toni Morrison

Oh, the places you'll go...

Summer is finally in full bloom and we are warming up to the new season, stretching our limbs and lifting our faces to the sun. Our children are graduating and moving into the next chapters, and with that brings the bittersweet moment of change. There are many young friends that we will miss seeing here in the bookstore, as we have happily watched them grow through the years. Come in and see what advice we have collected for them in the form of books, gifts and journals to send them on their way. But just know that we expect to see their familiar faces again whenever they return!

We also celebrate fathers this month and their roles in our lives. I had no better coach to prepare me for this world than my dad, and I know the same is true for many of you. He was pure joy. He had a passion for learning and reading. His interests ranged from history, biography, sports, finance, and literary fiction, as well as the tried and true crime dramas and suspenseful thrillers that many of us love. It was with our own dads in mind that we have assembled some great ideas for your Father's Day gifts.

Finally, on any given day, if you follow the noise in the bookstore, it will likely bring you to the children's section, as these youngest (and most delightful) of our customers often beat all the competition to make the most noise. These days however, when you make your way to the children's section it might be hammers or saws that you hear, competing with the lovely chatter of the kids. We are in the midst of an expansion of the children's section, as we believe that our kids need more space to explore the most interesting books in the store. Expect to see more of your favorites, as well as new selections coming out every day. We also have toys and gifts that encourage learning and participation. And our unicorn table is not to be missed! We expect to be moved in to the bigger space before the end of the month, so please come in and explore these happy changes to your community bookstore!   ~ Jane

Help us welcome Spokane area author and Washington State Book Award winner Bruce Holbert, who will talk about his new book Whiskey, which burns pleasantly as it goes down, but has a lasting, powerful effect. "[A]s cool as a Western and as fundamental as the Bible. Reminiscent of stories by Cormac McCarthy or Annie Proulx . . .  Whiskey  punches you in the gut, a blow that lands right at your core." - BookPage

Thursday, June 7, 6:30 p.m
Join us when we welcome back Seattle author  Nicola Griffith  (Hild ) when she talks about her new book  So Lucky.  This is fiction from the front lines, incandescent and urgent, a narrative juggernaut that rips through sentiment to expose the savagery of America's treatment of the disabled and chronically ill. So Lucky also blazes with hope and a ferocious love of self, of the life that becomes possible when we stop believing lies. Griffith is the multiple-award-winning author of several novels, including  Hild. A native of Yorkshire, England - now a dual U.S./U.K. citizen - she is a onetime self-defense instructor who turned to writing full-time upon being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Don't give up. Pay attention. We have to make ourselves larger to include the inconceivable." Balanced with a Zen practice that helps her to face death, this book is a moving meditation on living life in full bloom.

Thursday, June 21, 6:30pm
Eagle Harbor Books travels to the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art to host a presentation of  Unnatural Selection , a book by renowned British nature illustrator and natural historian  Katrina van Grouw. With a unique fusion of art, science, and history,  Unnatural Selection  is a lavishly and stunningly illustrated book about selective breeding - the ongoing transformation of animals at the hand of man. More important, it's a book about selective breeding on a far, far grander scale--a scale that encompasses all life on Earth. We'd call it evolution. Registration is required for this event, as space is limited. You can reserve a seat on Eventbrite here. We are asking for a $5 donation at the door.

Crimson Lake, by Candace Fox
Accused but not convicted of a brutal abduction, Ted Conkaffy's police career is toast, his marriage is over, and he's banished to a tiny town in the Outback where everyone knows his alleged crime and he's public enemy number one. His lawyer sets him up with a PI job working for Amanda Pharrell, a convicted killer. This debut novel by Australian Candace Fox is a gritty but hugely enjoyable thriller. Ted is a knight errant with an Aussie accent who can't shed his police commitment to catch the bad guys and protect the innocent. I loved it!  ~ Susan

Dark Angel, by Elly Griffiths
This tenth addition to the Ruth Galloway series is one of the best! Forensic anthropologist Ruth Galloway gets a call from an Italian colleague (former lover?) asking for help with a skeleton. Craving some sun, she packs up her daughter and another colleague and heads for a romantic hill town still haunted by ghosts of the Resistance. Griffiths deftly balances the plot lines at home and abroad to deliver another hugely satisfying and entertaining Galloway mystery full of atmosphere and loose ends. Fans of this series will love it, and if you haven't been introduced to Dr. Ruth Galloway, don't miss it! ~ Susan

A Perfect Shot, by Robin Yocum
Everybody in Mingo Junction, Ohio, wants a piece of Duke Ducheski, ever since he singlehandedly brought his high-school basketball team back from a 13-point deficit in the final minute of the 1971 state championship game. With a screwup best friend, a hateful wife, a dying son and a dying career as a steelworker, Duke is desperate for change as he faces middle age. Standing in his way is brother-in-law Tony DeMarco, the feared and fearless enforcer of the Ohio Valley's ruling mob family. In this pitch-perfect blend of character-driven thriller and small-town portraiture, it seems there's no way for Duke to get what he wants without seeing the bodies of those he's known all his life start to pile up. This is a sneakily compelling and deeply satisfying novel that turns the tired tropes of the crime-fiction genre inside-out. ~ Jim

The Prince and the Dressmaker, by Jen Wang
A perfectly wonderful and beautifully drawn story, ideal for starting conversations with young people about gender fluidity, taking chances and accepting yourself. The characters are all admirable and, though the story is simple, they will surely resonate with readers of all ages. Superb! ~ Jenna

Vicious, by V.E. Schwab
This story turns on its head everything you think you know about what it means to be a hero - forcing us to think about the "man behind the mask" in more realistic, more humanizing, ways than ever before. Between the lines, Vicious asks: is it the good deed that makes a man a hero, or is it the motives behind the good deed (the morals and the mindset of the man committing the supposed "act of heroism") that makes him a man to be admired, a man apart from the rest of society? Not even the creative minds of Stan Lee or Christopher Nolan have touched upon these questions of a hero's "humanity" as vividly or as successfully as Victoria does with Vicious

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR MIND: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence,
by Michael Pollan
I approached this book with considerable trepidation, but by the 2nd page, I was hooked and had to know more. Michael Pollan (Omnivore's Dilemma, Botany of Desire, Cooked) explores the fascinating history of psychedelic agents in our culture, along with the colorful cast of characters who have worked with them. There are many surprises, including the clear evidence that not only do these agents allow profound mystical experiences, but modern studies show that they are also highly effective at treating addiction, depression, anxiety, and many other health issues, with long lasting mind-altering effects. Pollan samples the psychedelics himself throughout the book, and his trips are described in detail. This is the most amazing book I have read in a very long time. ~ Jane
