Stress in Infancy 'Dramatically Alters' Body's Organs

Scientists have found the first evidence suggesting emotional stress in infancy has significant and far-reaching effects on the body and could result in disease later in life.

Psychological stress in infancy dramatically changes the amount of an important class of proteins, called GABAA receptors, which in turn may alter the workings of the heart, lungs, kidneys, and bladder.

Self-Regulation May Be Critical to Early Language & Literacy

Reading bedtime stories isn't the only key to success in developing language and literacy at a young age, according to a new study.

Researchers from Michigan State University found that a child's ability to self-regulate is a critical element in childhood language and literacy development.

Professor Replicates Famous Marshmallow Test, Makes New Observations

A new replication study of the well-known 'marshmallow test' - a famous psychological experiment designed to measure children's self-control - suggests that being able to delay gratification at a young age may not be as predictive of later life outcomes as was previously thought.

Are These Hormones the Key to Autism, Schizophrenia?

In a new study, investigators at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia turned to rhesus macaques to investigate the effects of two hormones, oxytocin and vasopressin - on social behavior.
These primates are known for their aggressive, competitive behavior in groups that are highly hierarchized - which typically split members between dominant and submissive individuals.

ABC Orders Up More 'Speechless'

Television network executives are doubling down on a comedy centering on the experiences of a teenager with cerebral palsy and his family.

ABC said Tuesday that it will renew "Speechless" for a third season.

The announcement comes as networks are unveiling their prime-time slate for the upcoming 2018-2019 season, which will start in the fall.

Autism Corner:   Brighter Futures for Children in Conflict-Affected Communities

At some point, most special needs families in the United States have felt stressed by the cost, distance or quality of support services in their communities. Now, imagine living in a community that has no autism services. This was the case for Haya's family until they learned about A Global Voice for Autism in May 2016.

Haya was diagnosed with autism at three-years-old in Aleppo, Syria. Many in her community believed that autism was caused by bad parenting and, after hearing about her diagnosis, excluded her mother, Maysaa from community events and gossiped about her in the streets. Concerned about giving her daughter the best life possible, Maysaa enrolled Haya in a local special needs center.
