This year marks the ninth year of the partnership between Grosh’s Lawn Service and the County’s Recycling Department for the Phone Book Challenge. It was started by Tom Grosh to help stop the large volume of old phone books being discarded at the landfill every year. Over the course of nine years, 71,000 phone books have been recycled.
“At Grosh’s Lawn Service being good stewards of our environment is a daily purpose. By supporting and sponsoring the telephone book recycling challenge we have the opportunity to allow the students in Washington County, MD to actually have a hands on and visual experience of how they can make a difference in our community and save our valuable resources and save landfill space,” comments Tom Grosh of Grosh’s Lawn Service.
This contest is unique in that any and all schools in Washington County can participate. Winners are determined by number of phone books collected divided by total number of students for that school, which means smaller schools can be very competitive. The Phone Book Challenge is supported by three sponsors: Grosh’s Lawn Service, EZtoUse.com, and the Washington County Teacher’s Federal Credit Union.
Total prize money this year is $1,500. The top five schools receive gift cards and checks for to use at their discretion.
