Treasurer's Report: First Quarter Update
The financial statement for the first third of the year is extremely positive, so much so that little need be said. Pledges are coming in timely or early, and expenses are staying within what is a truly balanced budget. Thank you all for your on-going support.
The Finance Committee is initiating cash management discipline to enable our operating funds to earn at least a modest interest rate beyond what is available from checking account options. It is also beginning to examine, with the Building and Grounds Ministry, the capital needs for the building.
Hearty thanks are due our Audit Committee consisting of Kathy Burton, Luke Williams and Martha Dane, for their diligent and timely work. The books of the parish have been examined through March 31, 2018, in the manner which exceeds the standards promulgated by the Diocese. Well done, Committee members!
Pete Dane
Treasurer

There is a new sign-up sheet for coffee hour on the bulletin board in the entry
for June and July and we need everyone to sign their name somewhere. We
should have at least two names for each week so sign up with a friend or
someone you would like to know better! You can also email Miriam at mantichino@gmail.com and tell me which week you would like to help.
Thanks for helping with our coffee fellowship.

Prayer List Requests & Birthdays
One of the responsibilities of the Pastoral Care and Welcoming Ministry is to
maintain the Prayer List. Please let us know if there is anyone you would like
to have added to the prayer list or if you know of any changes that need to be
made. The Prayer List can be found in the Sunday Bulletin and also in The
Navigator each week. Prayer requests can be sent to office@stbrendans-me.org
or to Miriam at mantichino@gmail.com.
We have just received a request from Linda Shepard for prayers for her husband
Jerry who has been in a coma in the ICU at EMMC in Bangor for the past week
and a half.
We are creating a list of birthdays so we can make sure that everyone's
birthday is remembered and celebrated. Please assist by sharing your birthdate with us. There will be a sheet during coffee hour the next few weeks where you can add your information or send an email to
mantichino@gmail.com
. If your birthday
is in June, let us know ASAP.

Existentialism and Ethics
People of our age grew up when existentialism was in the air and to some degree exercised a significant influence on how we thought and saw the world. It endures
to this day as perhaps the most sustained attempt ever developed to rigorously
think through the meaning and implications of human freedom. Reading L'Etranger
or La Peste is still a powerful and unsettling experience.
But there is a dark side. While each existentialist thinker had a deep philosophical
and personal commitment to ethical action, their thinking nevertheless led them
astray. Heidegger was an unrepentant Nazi and Sartre an enthusiastic Stalinist
and armchair Maoist. Camus, on the other hand, was active in the Resistance
and became a lonely voice articulating the conflicting nuances of the Algerian
War that saw hypocrisy and inhumanity on both sides of the conflict.
So what is the ethical dimension of existentialism? Peter Antich (the Younger)
will lead a discussion on this topic in July. You will be asked to read Sartre's
lecture entitled Existentialism is a Humanism, and a portion of Simone de Beauvoir's
Ethics of Ambiguity. This is not a heavy assignment. Please contact Pete Dane if
you wish to participate.

Second Sunday after Pentecost:
In today's liturgy the meaning of the Sabbath and of Sunday is the focus of the Gospel reading. Jesus sets aside the Sabbath rule, not because the Ten Commandments are
to be ignored, but because in his ministry something new is happening. In ancient days, King David's soldiers broke the Commandment because they were in a crisis situation, pursued by enemies and starving. Jesus' disciples are in a crisis situation because the Kingdom of God is breaking into history. In both critical moments the Law gives way
to the immediate need.
The first reading begins our semi-continuous reading of the Davidic history. It begins today with the call of God to the boy Samuel. Samuel grows to be the primary leader
of the people and the agent of God's choice of David and David's family as the rulers of the people. Much later the kingdom of David became the image of the coming of Messiah.
In today's second reading, Paul roots his authority as an apostle in his suffering. When
a Christian suffers for the sake of Jesus, Christ is manifested as crucified in that suffering. In that way the Gospel is proclaimed.
Baptized into Christ's Body, we gather in Eucharist to rejoice in God's Kingdom and to proclaim Christ dying and rising in our midst. Each Sunday is an Easter and a Pentecost in which our dying and rising with Christ by water and the Holy Spirit are renewed.

Icon of St. Brendan by Siri Beckman
Lord, we will trust you.
Help us to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown.
Give us the faith to leave old ways and break new ground with you.
Christ of the mysteries, we trust you to be stronger than each storm
within us.
We will trust in the darkness and know that our times are in your hand.
Tune our spirit to the music of heaven, and somehow, make our obedience count for you.
-Prayer attributed to St. Brendan
