Kairos Vol. 3, Issue #15

http://www.sunlakesumc.org/

Friends,

I share regarding several matters:

Click here for a list of our Krafters generous gifts to support a variety of special projects through the years. They work all year long making items for their annual bazaar in November. We have all benefited from their efforts.

Yesterday the Charge Conference approved the updated and restated Endowment Fund documents for our church. You may remember our Consultant suggested we look seriously at building our endowment funds for the future. So the action yesterday is the result of work by several people. It positions us well for the future. This means we will need to form two committees, an Endowment Fund Committee and a Legacy Giving Committee; each will have nine members. If you are interested in using your gifts in this way please volunteer or suggest someone's name to the office and we will follow-up to get these two committees staffed and functioning.

We have set Monday, May 7 at 1:30 pm in Lindsay Hall for our first gathering for conversation regarding the current status of our church as seen through the eyes of the Senior Pastor. Then he and the leaders want to hear from you regarding comments, suggestions, and questions as we move forward in our ministry together. Rather than a meal, we plan to provide desert for our first time together. It will be helpful for you to let us know you are coming so we have enough desert for everyone. Sign up in the church office or Lindsay Hall entry. I am really looking forward to this time together.

Since I will be in Israel the next two weeks, I am taking the liberty of not writing this weekly article.

Thank you so much for your continuing support of our church and its ministry.

Marvin

UNISON PRAYER - APRIL 14/15
Unison Prayer Logo
We praise you God, and thank you for all the blessings of this life, which includes the blessing of our bodies. We rejoice in our bodies, the wondrous way you have put us together with the complexity and grace of our physical selves. Forgive us when we abuse the good gift of our bodies. Forgive us when we abuse the bodies of others.
We praise you for the wonder of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. We are grateful for the promise, that by your grace and power we too shall be raised. Help us live today as those who know that promise and live each day in the confidence it gives us. Help us follow more and more carefully your son, Jesus Christ our risen Lord and Savior, in whose name we pray. Amen
SWEET LIFE CAFE - APRIL 19
Sweet Life Cafe
In the Old Testament, Joseph's story is a tale of heartbreak and sadness, of searching and celebration. Joseph's life was a mess - much like our lives are. In the midst of the mess, God is there. God was with Joseph, and God is with us!

Beginning this Thursday, 12:00 pm, Room 1, Sweet Life Café is featuring Sarah Heath's video/book study, What's Your Story? Seeing Your Life Through God's Eyes. In this four-week study, we'll look at Joseph's story in Genesis to find out how we can share our life story about how God has been with us in the mess!

For more information or to purchase a book ($11.50) to begin reading now, contact Pastor Jean or the church office. The coffee is on! Bring your lunch and bring a friend!
ALPHA RETURNS TO SLUMC - APRIL 22
Alpha Logo
Next Sunday, April 22, an introductory class will be held from 10:20 am to 12:00 pm in Room 4 to highlight the beginning of the Alpha course.

Originally intended as a non-threatening approach for introducing non-believers to the key elements of the Christian faith, it soon became apparent that Alpha is an excellent review for life-long Christians. The course will begin Sunday, May 6, and run for ten weeks.

For more information, contact Pastor Jean or the church office at (480) 895-8766.
LADIES ONLY LUNCH (L.O.L.) - APRIL 25

MEMORY CAFE - APRIL 30
Memory Cafe will be held on Monday, April 30 at 9:30 am in rooms 2 & 3. In May it will begin a regular schedule of the first and third Monday of each month.

This new program is specifically for individuals with Parkinson's disease and/or memory issues. It is a  place where families can meet to receive education and social support, which are critical to successful care-giving and opens avenues of communication for the individuals and their families with a vision to eliminate feelings of isolation and hopelessness.

If you would like more information regarding this new program, please contact Wayne Mangold at (480) 580-8317.
MOVIE TUESDAY - MAY 1
Singles Movie Tuesday Logo 2018
Don't miss the last Singles Movie Tuesday for the season, May 1, it's sure to be "reel" fun!

Sign up in Lindsay Hall or call the church office (480) 895-8766 to add your name to the list.

Calls will be made on the Sunday or Monday prior with movie name and meeting time.
GRIEFSHARE BEGINS - MAY 2
Much as we would like it, grief is not a "one-time" event. When a loved one dies, the grief experienced is not encapsulated in one hour, one day, or one week. Grief does not end when the memorial service comes to a close. Grief is an experience that impacts every corner of one's life creating a new normal in which one now lives.

If you are grieving the passing of a loved one and are struggling to make sense of the life you now have, consider being a part of GriefShare; an 11-week grief support group led by leaders who have experienced the pain of losing a loved one.

GriefShare is a class in which participants find understanding, encouragement, and support in the midst of their struggles. The class begins on Wednesday, May 2, 1:00 pm, room 4. For more information or to register ($15), contact Pastor Jean or check the church website at www.sunlakesumc.org .
CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to our newly commissioned Stephen Ministers!

DO YOU HAVE EXTRA...

Krafters are a group of approximately 40 ladies who meet weekly for fellowship and make items to sell at the annual Bazaar in November. All the proceeds from the Bazaar go directly to the needs of our Church.

We do all kinds of crafts, jewelry, cards, wreaths, quilts, sewn items and American Girl doll clothes and designer shoes! Almost 100% of the materials used are donated to us.

Since many of you are leaving for the summer and cleaning out closets, think of us if you come across any extra 100% cotton fabric, lace, trim or other nice embellishments, you'd like to donate to a worthy cause.

You may place your donation in the red wagon in the church office entrance, or visit the Krafters in Room 14, Education Building, between 12:30 and 2:30 pm on Mondays. If you have any questions, please call the church office at (480) 895-8766.

Thank you for supporting our ministry!
UNDIE SUNDAY!

SINGLES SYNOPSIS
Singles Logo
A group of 15 from the Singles group attended the Odysea Aquarium on April 13 and became immersed in the undersea world! What an interesting place! However, I am not sure what everyone enjoyed the most, the aquarium or the wonderful milkshakes at Johnny Rockets afterwards!

The Singles events planned for May are Movie Tuesday and our end of the season event on Friday, May 11, 5:00 pm with a movie, pizza, popcorn, and refreshments. We'd like to show How to Steal A Million with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole, does anyone have a copy we can borrow?

The season was busy as usual, beginning with our first Movie Tuesday last October (thank you Peggy Nicholson and crew). Since then, including a movie each month, the Singles have attended:

Oct - Welcome Back potluck w/Melanie Brooks playing her saxophone
Nov - Chandler Symphony - Cheers for Youth program
Dec - Rockin R Ranch - Christmas program
Jan - The Duttons
Feb - Hale Theater in the round - No No Nanette
Mar - Queen Creek Olive Mill
Apr - Odysea Aquarium
May - Movie/pizza night in Lindsay Hall

What a busy year! We encourage all singles or those living alone to join us next year as we plan more activities! We carpool to each event and include lunch/dinner while we are out!

Have a wonderful summer!

DO YOU SEE THE PICTURES?

Do you see a red x where a picture should be in the Kairos newsletter?

Your mail program is protecting your privacy by blocking the pictures.  To unblock the pictures, look at the top of the email the newsletter is attached to and there should be a 'statement bar' that instructs you on how to unblock the pictures. Normally you opposite click on the bar, a menu will drop down and you click on 'download pictures.'

If you still don't see the pictures, call the church office at (480) 895-8766 and we will try and help you!
