PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:
by Tuyen T. Tran, M.D.
In recent years, there has been tremendous tension and conflict among the medical community and its insurers, trial lawyers and victims' rights groups regarding needed changes to our current medical malpractice system: tort reform. The intents of our medical malpractice liability system were to compensate patients who have been harmed through the negligence of healthcare providers and to deter providers from practicing negligently. The problem is that our current system fails to compensate patients who have suffered from substandard medical care and compensates those who have not. Additionally, many doctors feel compelled to practice "defensive" medicine based on fear of legal liability.

Spring Dinner Meeting Among the Most Attended Ever
The LMS Dinner Meeting on May 8 th at the U.K. Hilary J. Boone Center was among the most attended meetings ever with over 100 registered guests. The packed agenda included a celebration of the Kentucky Blood Center 50 th anniversary, presenting a LMS Foundation grant, awarding LMS Essay Contest winners, and our featured speaker, Senator Ralph Alvarado, M.D., KY Senate District 28.

Senator Alvarado, a LMS member and always a popular draw, gave a detailed, almost inside-baseball like, review of the 2018 Kentucky legislative session that recently concluded. He opened with describing the passage of the major legislation of the session, pension reform and the state budget.

LMS Provides Members with Business Focused Programs

Many of our members entered private practices, highly skilled to administer medical care, but lacking the background to manage the business. The Lexington Medical Society has initiated two programs to support our members' business knowledge: "Leadership of the Business of Medicine," and the "Private Practice Business Forum." Both programs received positive evaluations by our members.
