We had a wonderful Mass of Thanksgiving this morning in honor of our  graduating 8th grade students, their parents and our many benefactors. The Mass was con-celebrated with Bishop Mitch, Msgr. Liston, Msgr. Joyce and Fr. Mengel and was hosted by the 8th grade students.  It was rather bitter-sweet as this was the last Mass the 8th grade students will participate in at St. Michael's Academy.  There are additional details and photos farther down in the newsletter.

Immediately following the Mass, the traditional Pinning Ceremony was held where our donors were paired with an 8th grade student who presented them with their official SMA pin.

We will be having a variety of  culminating activities next week including our Carnival. You might remember that we were forced to reschedule the Carnival to next Friday.  We hope you will be able to join us at a few events as we wrap up the school year.

Enjoy a nice weekend.

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal
Principal

Reflections from the Art Room

As we come to a close on this school year, I always finish up my yearly plans with a collection of images that I have taken throughout the year and put together in a slideshow, so that all students can reflect and remember their experience of making art.

We have had so many wonderful experiences here at SMA. Those experiences are reflected on the faces of the students holding up their projects proudly, smiling and knowing they did a great job. You could hear it in their laughter as they shared a memory.  They were a team, a community, a creative group of cool kids that work together and helped each other.

St. Michael's Academy's artists are amazing!  They have expressed their talents, shared their ideas, captivated their audiences and really made a difference in the lives of their classmates and teachers.

The art show was a good representation of the different kinds of work that students have been engaged in for the past 4 months. The students in grades 5-8 produced the tape and foil sculptures. These tiny little sculptures represent so much about who these artists are and what inspires them. They transformed foil and tape into 3D sculptures, complete with stages and props that brought their art to life.

There were the many different types watercolor paintings created by artists in grades 1-3 that featured images of skies, rainbows and different types of landscapes. Creating an image of a place, real or imaginary, is an important step in understanding how art helps students to see the world around them and it gives them the confidence to represent it.

Students in Kindergarten explored making a collage self-portrait with many different types and colors of paper. These students spent a lot of time practicing and building collages and emphasized important details.  Preschool students got the opportunity to explore color using different types of media such as oil and chalk pastel, paint and glitter.   Art is a subject that is almost always hands on, so students are always fully engaged in their activities.

Finally our 4th grade classes were inspired by guitar music. They sketched and created guitar collages using many different types of textured materials, tools and different types of adhesives such as masking tape, liquid glue and hot glue.

Building with tools, using imagination and thinking outside the box, are a huge part of the art experience and students here are prepared for anything! They work well individually or together as a team. They are activated, ready with their ideas and waiting for a blank page to spill their thoughts and stories on to. With the right media, anything is possible here in the St. Michael's Academy Art Room.

Thanks for a wonderful first year here at SMA!

 8th Grade

8th Grade Mass and Pinning

The 8th grade students hosted the annual Mass of Thanksgiving this morning.  The special Mass was con-celebrated by Bishop Mitchell Rozanski, Msgr. Daniel Liston, Msgr. David Joyce and Fr. Mark Mengel and attended by the students, staff, faculty and benefactors of St. Michael's Academy.

Of particular note was the moving speech given by 8th grade student Jada who reflected back on her many years at St. Michael's Academy and how she has grown both spiritually and academically.  Her eloquent words paid tribute to the many facets of her education at SMA.  The Mass ended with a special choral performance by our 8th grade students of "Give Me Jesus" led by Ms. Vanessa Ford from the Community Music School of Springfield.

Immediately following Mass, the Pinning Ceremony was held.  This "rite of passage" ceremony involves the 8th grade students receiving their official St. Michael's Academy lapel pin from a donor.

We would like to recognize our many benefactors and extend a special thank you for their generosity.  It is through the kindness and help of our donors, that St. Michael's Academy continues to be the wonderful school that it is.

Springfield College

And Speaking Of Fitness...Want To Participate?

Hello,

My name is Elizabeth O'Neill. I am a professor in Exercise Science at Springfield College. My research team and I are conducting a study investigating the impact of combined resistance and aerobic exercise on cardiovascular variables.

We are in need of participants. We are hoping you might be willing and interested in helping us out by serving as a participant.

We are looking for individuals between the ages of 30-60 who are recreationally active.
If you do not get equal to or more than 150 min a week of moderate intensity or equal to or more than 75 min of vigorous intensity aerobic exercise, and do not get at least 2 days of strength training per week during the previous 3 months you could potentially qualify.

You would only need to complete 3 sessions, the first session will last approximately 1 hour and the second and third session will last approximately 2 hours. During the first session you will complete paperwork which will determine if you qualify for the study, and if you qualify you will complete some resistance exercises to determine the correct training load for sessions two and three. During sessions two and three, you will complete a bout of aerobic exercise (walking on a treadmill) lasting 30 minutes and complete four resistance exercises (2 sets of 12 repetitions each).

This study is informative for you as you will learn about your cardiovascular health, body composition, and muscular strength. We thank you for your time and consideration.

If interested please email me or my research assistant:
