Tom Mack - Distinguished Alumni Award
|
College of Veterinary Medicine alumnus, Thomas R. Mack, DVM, BS, has been recognized with a 2018 Distinguished Alumnus award from the college for his dedication and service to his local community and the profession.
Mack earned his BS (1957) and DVM (1961) from The Ohio State University. Following graduation, he entered private practice where he owned and operated Bayshore Animal Hospital in San Mateo, California for over 35 years. In 1998, he was honored with the Western Region Practitioner of the Year Award by the American Animal Hospital Association.
Mack is longtime supporter and activist for numerous community and global improvement groups. He founded and chaired the Alliance for Smiles organization, an organization that provides comprehensive treatment for cleft lip and palate anomalies. He was even Mayor of his community, San Mateo. In 2016, he became a supporter and advocate for GOHi; and in 2018 he joined the GOHi external advisory board. His commitment to improving the world he lives in is palpable.

MBA GAP students
Seven MBA students from Ohio State's Fisher College of Business were in eastern Africa completing their Global Applied Project (GAP) addressing Global One Health initiative's business challenges.
The GAP team consisted of Katie Abdellatif, Aziza Allen, Ariel Cooper, John Cox, Neethi Johnson, Kaitlyn Kendall-Sperry and Obi Nnebedum. They spent one month in Ethiopia and Kenya doing extensive research on local NGOs with similar operations and compiled deliverables detailing ideal models of structure and operations-based practices for the Global One Health initiative.
With the help of the regional GOHi office in Addis Ababa, the students met with several local partner institutions and organizations including the University of Nairobi, CDT-Africa, the International Livestock Research Institute, the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, the World Animal Protection Agency, I-TECH (International Training and Education Center for Health) Kenya and the Ethiopian Branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention while conducting their research. University of North Carolina at Charlotte Regional Office Visit
The Global One Health initiative regional office hosted malarial researchers, Eugenia Lo and Tamar Carter, from the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics, University of North Carolina at Charlotte. GOHi arranged a meeting and site visit that involved researchers from Addis Ababa University and Ethiopian Public Health Institute, with the intention of future collaboration and partnership.

Congratulations to Samuel Kariuki, deputy director, Research and Development, KEMRI, Kenya
|
A long-time collaborator and supporter of GOHi, Samuel Kariuki DVM, PhD, MSc was appointed deputy director in charge of Research and Development at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in Nairobi beginning May 1.
He will be involved with formulating KEMRI policy directions for research and continuing KEMRI success as a leader in the region. Dr. Kariuki looks forward to more opportunities for further collaborations with GOHi and Ohio State in areas of genomics such as
foodborne infections, protozoa, cancer and other non-communicable diseases), antimicrobial resistance and health systems research.

WHIP 3 Tuberculosis Clinical Trial update
|
The WHIP3/TB clinical trial, a part of USAID's Challenge TB, supported by KNCV and Aurum Institute is continuing with huge success in Ethiopia. Starting this month, the initial participants that were the first to enroll in the study will visit our study sites for their 12 month appointment. This will be the start of determining which drug regimen has been is the most effective in preventing TB incidence.
Aurum's data manager has provided data management training and praised the Ethiopia team, which is led by Dr. Getnet Yimer, GOHi regional director, for their excellent participant retention and appropriate documentation of clinical trial data.
The trial started in June 2017 and will run until September 30, 2019.

GOHi regional office co-hosted a rabies awareness workshop
|
The Ohio State Global One Health initiative (GOHi), in collaboration with the Government Communication Affairs Office (GCAO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), co-hosted the "Rabies: Create Awareness, Save a Life!" workshop organized by the National One Health Steering Committee of Ethiopia on May 9 at Getfam Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The workshop provided a forum for One Health stakeholders in Ethiopia to share major updates on One Health activities and highlight the national rabies control and elimination strategy development, share science-based information on rabies prevention and control to create public awareness on the disease and its prevention mechanisms and strengthen and promote national One Health communication and networking among One Health professionals in Ethiopia.The workshop brought together participants from the different ministries, government institutions, NGOs and the media.

Get to know GOHi: Tewodros Abebe
|
Tewodros Abebe joined the team May 1 as the GOHi Eastern Afica Regional Office Operations Manager. He has twobachelors degrees in accounting and public administration anddevelopment management.
He previously worked for the United Kingdom-based Development Alternatives, Inc. as the Deputy Finance and Logistics manager.
Abebe lives in Addis Ababa with his wife and two young children. We are delighted to have him join us.

Bipartisan Senate bill for One Health introduced March 22
S.2615, sponsored by Senator Tim Smith (D-MN) and Senator Todd Young (R-IN) and also known as the "Advancing Emergency Preparedness Through One Health Act of 2018," will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the U.S. government's response to disease emergencies by requiring the U.S. departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture to submit to Congress a national One Health framework for coordinated federal efforts that will also describe existing activities and contain suggestions for expanding and complementing the activities of several institutions that fight disease emergencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.
"Advancing Emergency Preparedness Through One Health Act of 2018," has been referred to the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pension for their review.
The One Health framework in S.2615 would:
- Advance workforce development related to prevention of and response to disease outbreaks in animals and humans
- Improve coordination between federal agencies who study human and animal health and the environment
- Advance scientific understanding of the connections between human, animal and environmental health

Inter-University Council of East Africa call for master's fellowship applications
The World Bank is partnering with eight governments in Eastern and Southern Africa in an innovative project with the aim of improving the quality of training and research in higher education, and reducing the skill gaps in key development priority areas. To encourage the participation of young African female students at the postgraduate level, the Inter-University Council of East Africa will implement a fellowship program aimed at providing competitive master's scholarships to academically deserving future talents to promote regional female student mobility. Eligible female applicants who can demonstrate interest and ability in the priority areas are encouraged to apply for the 30 fellowships available for the 2018-2019 academic year. Smithsonian Institute Exhibition, Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World, spotlights One Health
On view in Washington, D.C. now through 2021, the exhibition invites visitors to join epidemiologists, veterinarians, public health workers and citizens of all ages and origins as they rush to identify and contain infectious disease outbreaks. Case studies of HIV/AIDS, Ebola virus, and influenza highlight the social and emotional fallout of outbreaks for victims, their loved ones and society overall. Read more.

7th International Meeting on Emerging Diseases and Surveillance (IMED)
This year's meeting will be held in Vienna, Austria from November 9 - 12. For those whose work deals with threats from infectious agents, IMED 2018 will once again bring leading scientists, clinicians and policy makers to Vienna to present new knowledge and breakthroughs and discuss how to discover, detect, understand, prevent and respond to outbreaks of emerging pathogens. IMED 2018 Abstract Submissions are open through July 1.
Texas Tech University - International Aridlands Conference
The Office of International Affairs (OIA) at Texas Tech University (TTU), located in Lubbock, Texas, will host the International Aridlands conference August 13 - 14.
TTU has long been a leader in research in arid and semi-arid environments, being home to the Water Center in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the Water Resources Center in the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering, the Center for Water Law and Policy in the School of Law, and the International Center for Arid and Semi-Arid Land Studies in the OIA. To participate, submit a title (up to 20 words), abstract (up to 250 words), session of interest and contact information to Gad Perry by June 25.
Tour de H20 (Saturday, June 2)
Tour de H20, - a fundraiser to bring clean water to rural communities in East Africa - will be held June 2 at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park. This year Tour de H20 is partnering with Ohio State's Global Water Institute and the money raised will go towards one of the sustainable village water systems in Tanzania. It is an annual cycling, running and walking event. Register online or donate.
