Changing the milkfat conversation
The discussion surrounding the benefits of consuming whole milk dairy is not a new one, and although there is much work to be done still, dairy farmers' investment in research is showing progress on changing the dialogue.
"The story of milkfats is really interesting," said Dr. Greg Miller, global chief science officer of the National Dairy Council (NDC). "There isn't a meeting that I show up at without farmers coming up to ask, 'Greg, what's going on with milkfat research?'"
USDA announces $1.5m in grants to support dairy industry
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced this week that $1.5 million in competitive grant funding is available for the Dairy Business Innovation (DBI) Initiatives. DBI Initiatives are authorized through the 2018 farm bill and support USDA's efforts to reduce risk and develop higher-value uses for dairy products, diversify farmer income through processing and marketing innovation and encourage the use of regional milk production.
The DBI Initiatives are expected to provide direct technical assistance and make grants to dairy businesses. USDA said initiatives must be positioned to draw on existing dairy industry resources, including dairy farm density and farmland suitability for dairying as well as activities conducted by dairy promotion and research programs, research organizations, dairy businesses or academic and industry stakeholders.
Study gives comprehensive look at bovine milk
Milk is a dietary staple full of key nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins. Now, scientists with the University of Alberta have report in the American Chemical Society's (ACS) Journal of Agricultural & Food Chemistry a comprehensive, centralized database of all known bovine milk compounds.
Given its popularity, cow's milk has been the subject of numerous scientific studies in recent history, ACS said in an announcement. There are thousands of known components in the liquid, but the data are scattered throughout the literature. Also, analyzing milk can be a complex undertaking, as it can vary in amount of and identities of its constituent compounds, depending on the breed of cow, type of feed and other factors.

WHO pulls support for EAT-Lancet event   
The World Health Organization (WHO) reportedly decided against sponsoring the launch of the EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet, Health in Geneva, Switzerland, following pressure from an Italian ambassador who raised concern regarding the impact of the largely plant based diet on people's health and livelihoods.

Despite the pull back of the WHO endorsement, the event went ahead as planned at the end of March and was sponsored by the government of Norway, reported the British Medical Journal.

 After 13 years with ADSA, Peter Studney has concluded his service as executive director. The ADSA leadership thanks Peter for his service to our organization and wishes him well in his future endeavors. We have begun the process to hire a new executive director and seek to fill that position as soon as possible. In the interim, please be aware that FASS will continue to support ADSA operations as normal and all meeting and journal activities are proceeding as planned. The NANP Nutrition Models Workshop
Plan now to join us early on Sunday, June 23, for the National Animal Nutrition Program (NANP) Nutrition Models workshop.
The NANP Nutrition Models workshop will use lectures and exercises to illustrate how mathematical models are constructed, evaluated, and applied toward problems in animal nutrition. Several modeling approaches are covered, but particular emphasis is given to dynamic, mechanistic models. The workshop will give attendees a basic fluency in mathematical modeling and, in so doing, advance their use of models in nutrition research. Following feedback from past attendees, we will bring new topics to the 2019 workshop. These topics will make up an advanced workshop and target (1) past attendees who want to continue attending our workshops, and (2) students who have some experience with modeling.
