Saint Sarkis Basketball Award Ceremony
Reported by Edward Barsamian

The Saint Sarkis Basketball program held its annual award ceremony on Saturday, May 4 in the main hall of the church.  This is the closing event each basketball season, with players, coaches and parents being recognized for their efforts over the season.

The evening started with meal, with members of the Girls team reciting the blessing prayer, The menu consisted of a variety of food provided by the parents and coaches from hot pizza , heroes, pastas, spreads, salads, desserts and fruits and of course the Championship cake.

Following the meal the award ceremony started with Edward Barsamian welcoming all and expressing his appreciation and thanks to all parents and coaches for their contributions and support. He then called upon coach Emma Biramian to assist in presenting the Girls Team members their awards.

Once again, the Girls team had 3 "Most Valuable Players" , each making major contributions to the team's success. Stephanie and Breanna Shulman and Tonya Orangian were this year's MVPs.

Juniors coach Arry Nalbandian had always had a special connection with the players. He and coach Varadi  love coaching the youngsters and they love them in return. From the very beginning coach Arry assigned nicknames to all team members, and when he called them to receive their awards, their ear to ear smiles reflected their joy. Every player received an appropriate award reflecting their strengths and game attitudes, and the team MVP was Alex Kouyoudjian.

The evening entertainment was once again Coach Arry who came prepared with DJ equipment, which to everyone's amusement, took a little time for him to master before he could play music consistently. Tony Marino performed samples of his music compositions, and Brandon Nalbandian showed off his pro level dance moves. With everyone dancing and swaying to the music, no one wanted to leave until persuaded by lights turned on and off.

Besides an amazing, exceptional season for both teams, this was another wonderful memory for everyone present. Once again, sincere thanks to all Saint Sarkis Basketball supporters.
"Letter to Yerevan" The Book Presentation
Reported By: Lilit Kevorkian, NY "Hyortik" Junior Advisor
On May 28, 2017, the 99th anniversary of the First Republic of Armenia,  Rupen Janbazian and Tatul Sonentz-Papazian began the first-ever English translation of Andranik Tzarukian's long form poem "Tught ar Yerevan" ("Letter to Yerevan"). Sponsored by St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church and the Armenian Youth Federation's New York "Hyortik" chapter last Friday's book presentation welcomed Rupen Janbazian to New York.
The evening began with the singing of Mer Hayrenik. Razmig Boyajian, chair of the AYF NY "Hyortik" chapter, discussed the historical significance of Armenian literature and the importance of recorded history. "Let us never forget that our cultural treasures embodied by the quill pen has recorded our history, even when the only ink we had was our blood," noted Boyajian in his opening remarks.
Briel Felice read an excerpt from Gevorg Abov's 1944 slanderous critique « Մենք չենք մոռացել» "We Have Not Forgotten," a 110-word vow to banish the ARF. Andrew Gorgissian, treasurer of the NY "Hyortik" junior chapter, and Anahit Indzhigulyan, secretary of the NY "Hyortik" junior chapter, read excerpts from Tzarukian's response.
Translator and former editor of the Armenian Weekly, Rupen Janbazian, was first enthralled by "Letter to Yerevan" in high school nearly 16 years ago. He discussed his inspiration for the translation. The original Armenian is published side-by-side with the English translation to increase exposure of this beautiful Armenian work to youth who may not be proficient in the language of the original text.
Fr. Nareg Terterian offered his blessing of the translation and the Armenian youth embracing our cultural heritage.
Much like "Letter to Yerevan's" contribution to Armenian literature, the Hairenik Association has embarked on a digitization project to create an online academic resource, digitizing the Hairenik and Armenian Weekly newspaper collection. Plans are in store to create an online archive of newspaper issues from as far back as 1936. The book sale proceeds from "Letter to Yerevan" were donated to this effort as well as to help subsidize travel to AYF Junior Seminar.

The 3rd Annual Panel Discussion on Mental Health
Dear Parishioners:

On Sunday, June 2, after church services, St. Sarkis will host the 3rd Annual "Ways To Wellness: A Panel Discussion on Mental Health." This program on mental health has been a huge success each year.

The purpose of the discussion is to destigmatize mental health and illness and help our parishioners learn more about the importance of mental health.

Our panel discussion will again feature esteemed mental health practitioners with whom you are familiar: Yeraz Markarian, PhD a licensed clinical psychologist, Executive Director of Healthy Mind NY, where she provides individual and group therapy, family counseling and parenting skills, and Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; Hagop Gorgissian, MD an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, St. George University who also has a private practice in Queens; and Carlo Bayrakdarian, MD a geriatric psychiatrist who has a private practice throughout Westchester and in New York City and was a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at the Cornell University Medical Center.

We want to make sure the lecture meets the needs of our parishioners. To that end, if there is a topic you want covered, you can email [email protected]. All requests will be kept confidential.

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you at the program on June 2.

Sincerely,
Fr. Nareg Terterian

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PETER THE APOSTLE (5.1-14)
To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. Amen.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (5.19-30)
Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
"Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out-those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads)
RED SUNDAY
This Sunday (May 12) is the fourth Sunday of Eastertide, known as Red Sunday (Garmir Giragi). The name does not have an ecclesiastical origin. Red is the color of blood and this may be an appropriate time to honor the memory of the early Christian martyrs. The name Red Sunday is also believed to refer to the burst of color that comes forth from the land after a barren winter. Similar to last week's Green Sunday, it is a celebration of nature and life, symbolizing rebirth after the Resurrection of our Lord.
