The Cones will be the talk of the village this summer as  Blowing Rock Art & History Museum brings pieces from the art collections of Claribel and Etta Cone (siblings of Moses H. Cone) to the mountains for Modern Visions, Modern Art: The Cone Sisters in North Carolina from August 3 through November 30.

The art collection of Dr. Claribel and Etta Cone is cherished by art historians and museum-goers alike, and the exhibit presents a compelling selection of works on paper, paintings, and sculptures by artists in the collection who drew the admiration and attention of Claribel and Etta Cone: Henri Matisse, Jacques Villon, Marie Laurencin, Ben Silbert, John Graham, Everett Bryant, Gertraud Brausewetter, Ilse Breit, Teresa Denny, and Bernice Oehler.

The art collection of the Cone sisters was made possible with the financial support of their brothers’ thriving textile business in North Carolina.  The Foundation is offering a companion exhibit at the museum titled, Modern Visions, Mountain Views: The Cones of Flat Top Manor.  It connects the story of the Cone family to the Blowing Rock estate built by Claribel and Etta’s eldest brother, North Carolina’s “Denim King,” Moses H. Cone and his wife, Bertha Lindau Cone.

Modern Visions, Modern Art is presented to the community by Wells Fargo.
The Parkway comes alive in May

This is the month when visitor centers, campgrounds, and historical sites spring back to life to welcome Parkway travelers. Last year, more than 14 million visitors came to experience the mountains and the communities along the way. Here are just a few of the opening dates for the 2019 season.

Hear the mountains: The Blue Ridge Music Center is now open on weekends. Stop by to check out the Roots of American Music Museum, Midday Mountain Music on the breezeway, and pick up a concert season schedule from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday-Monday, May 9-13 & May 17-20. Daily hours resume on May 23.

Pack your tent: The bulk of campgrounds open on May 17, including Otter Creek, Peaks of Otter, Rocky Knob, Doughton Park, Crabtree Falls, and Mount Pisgah. If you can’t wait to get out there, Linville Falls and Price Park campgrounds are already operating.

Last but not least: Mabry Mill and Brinegar Cabin are the final historical sites to welcome visitors with a start date of May 25.

“To this day, the Blue Ridge Parkway remains the single most positive impact to the economies in the High Country, thus raising the standard of living for many of our citizens. My wife and I elected to contribute to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation in the hopes that the Parkway would continue to thrive with marked improvements leading to an increase in annual visitors.”
