ANNUAL MEETING ABSTRACT CRUNCH TIME!
|
Happy Springtime AAVLD members! The winter disease season is over, classroom responsibilities are behind you, calves are soon going out to warm dry pastures, the curtains in hog and poultry barns will soon rise, and it is time to find those interesting diagnostic cases to submit for presentation at the 2019 AAVLD annual meeting in Providence Rhode Island October 24th – 30th. Open submission began April 1st, and CLOSES ON May 24th.

We need your submissions for oral or poster presentations to ensure our annual meeting is a success. We need submissions from seasoned diagnosticians sharing their insights, we need submissions from young diagnosticians building their resumes and experiences, and of course we need submissions from trainees and graduate students that are learning the ropes and establishing valuable communication skills. So whatever category you fall into, your submission is critical and greatly appreciated by your colleagues. Below is general submission information which can also be found on our AAVLD website. Membership renewals due by November 15!

AAVLD membership is open to any individual interested in the disciplines and activities of veterinary diagnostic laboratories. Membership terms are by calendar year (January-December) and membership dues are payable by November 15th of the preceding year (to ensure inclusion in the annual membership directory, eligibility for committee involvement, and receipt of all six issues of the JVDI). Note: In order to receive a discounted rate for the Annual Meeting registration, you are required to be a current AAVLD Member.

The goal of JVDI in Focus is to bring attention to an interesting article appearing in the
Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation
. This month’s focus is on an article in the May Focus Issue on Backyard Poultry:
“An outbreak of
Mycoplasma mycoides
subspecies
capri
arthritis in young goats: a case study”

Abstract.
Mycoplasmosis is a well-known cause of morbidity and mortality in small ruminants. Previously recognized outbreaks have involved arthritis, and pneumonia or pleuropneumonia. Modern bacteriology procedures rely less on isolation techniques that require special media for mollicutes given that these species are notoriously difficult to isolate, and rely more on PCR tests. We report an outbreak of arthritis, pleuropneumonia, and mild meningitis affecting dairy goat kids, spanning a period of 3 y, which had unusual epidemiologic characteristics related to husbandry practices. Lesions were characterized by polyarthritis of the appendicular joints, with copious joint fluid and extension of arthritic exudate beyond the joint itself. The cause remained unknown until serendipitous isolation of a mycoplasma on blood agar. Mycoplasmosis was not detected from synovial samples by a general mycoplasma PCR, despite multiple attempts. Isolated colonies were also negative by this general PCR assay. The isolate was identified as
Mycoplasma mycoides
subspecies
capri
, using universal 16S primers and amplicon sequencing. Testing of additional isolates from other diseased goats in the herd confirmed that this was the cause of illness. A failure to recognize the distinct nature of organisms of the
M. mycoides
group of mycoplasmas meant that a PCR test that cannot detect this group of organisms was utilized at first, and the etiology of the illness was overlooked for a period of time. Veterinary pathologists and microbiologists must be aware of the limitations of some PCR assays when confronted with joint disease and pleuropneumonia in small ruminants.

NINTH SOUTH-EAST LABORATORY DIRECTORS’ MEETING IN LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY

The 9
th
SE Lab Directors’ meeting was hosted by the UKVDL-Lexington Lab from April 15-16, 2019. This annual meeting started in 2010 and has been held every year, except 2011. This year, there were 23 attendees representing the following 13 labs: AL (Thompson-Bishop Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory), Arkansas Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, FL (Bronson Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory), GA (Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory; Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigation Laboratory), LA Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Mississippi Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Laboratory System, Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, TN (University of Tennessee Veterinary Diagnostic Lab), Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, VA (Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services; Virginia Tech Animal Laboratory Services), and WV (Moorefield Animal Health Diagnostic Lab). The 2020 meeting will be hosted in Florida by the Bronson Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.
The format of these meetings is informal, allowing for more round the table discussions as opposed to presentations on topics ranging from administrative/financial through regulatory to technical. This year’s topics included: BSL-3 facilities, LIMS, outreach, electronic accessioning, GIS mapping of animal disease, diagnostic microbiology, QA/QC, zoonotic diseases, the Farm Bill, and laboratory physical security. The program also included a tour of laboratory facilities.

The Northeast AAVLD held their annual meeting April 7-10 in Annapolis MD. For the third year in a row, NEAAVLD joined with NEUSAHA and the Northeast Oral Rabies Vaccination Group. There were close to 100 attendees between the three groups. This was a great opportunity for laboratory diagnosticians to connect with each other as well as interact with their state and federal regulatory counterparts.

There were 9 lab directors along with technicians, quality assurance officers and pathologists representing labs in 8 states. The meeting had a packed agenda of presentations and included joint as well as breakout sessions for the different groups. Regional meetings can help increase participation from members who aren’t able to make it to our national AAVLD meetings. We’re looking forward to another joint regional meeting next year in New York.

AAVLD Website Update
The AAVLD website has content that is needed by, and useful to members, the Accreditation Committee, JVDI/publications, other standing & special committees and other interested parties. However, the current version went live in 2012 and over the years, as more and more content was added, it has become difficult to navigate and easily find what is needed. Therefore, the Executive Board has formed a Website Task Force to investigate, plan and guide an update/makeover of the organization website to make it easier to find and use the information and services available there. One of the first Website Task Force tasks will be to survey members on the issues they encounter on the current website, and what features are needed, and those wanted in the new website.
