Sparrow honors DO as Physician of the Year, inducts new members to Hall of Fame
David Luginbill, DO, a Lansing native, has been named Sparrow's 2019 Physician of the Year.
Kristin Bredin, DO, Medical Director of Sparrow Hospice and Palliative Care, received the Sparrow Physician Leadership Award.
They, along with five others inducted into Sparrow's Physicians Hall of Fame, were honored during the recent Sparrow Physician Recognition Dinner at the University Club of Michigan State University.
Sparrow is proud to recognize some of the more than 950 Physicians who are transforming care in the Mid-Michigan region. Sparrow Physicians, with their everyday actions, put the needs of our Patients first.
Dr. Luginbill, of Dimondale, is a Family Medicine Physician who works for Sparrow Medical Group Lansing and has attended over 2,000 births. A graduate of the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, he was honored as Physician of the Year for 2014-15 by the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians.
Dr. Luginbill, who was born at Sparrow himself, highly values the relationships he established with his patients and the opportunity to care for individuals and families through multiple generations.
"It's the people that really are the best part of being a doctor," he said.
Dr. Bredin was born and raised in Holt and began her medical career as a Sparrow Hospitalist before transitioning to work with the Palliative Care team. She currently oversees all three Sparrow programs: Hospice House, Home Hospice, and Palliative Care.

Addressing ACES in Primary Care

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events occurring before age 18. ACEs include all types of abuse and neglect as well as parental mental illness, substance use, divorce, incarceration, and domestic violence. A landmark 1990s study found a significant relationship between the number of ACEs a person experienced and a variety of negative outcomes in adulthood, including poor physical and mental health, substance abuse, and risky behaviors. The more ACEs experienced, the greater the risk for these outcomes. Sunday, May 19, 3:15 pm, Mark Sloane, DO, will present on how Primary Care physicians can identify and address ACES challenges with their patients.

Provider Delivered Care Management (PDCM) builds upon the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) in
transforming care delivery, enabling physicians to deliver coordinated team-based care.
The program allows physician-lead health care teams to deliver services that are billed by qualified practitioners. BCBSM recently announced that Medical Assistants and Community Health Workers can now provide certain care management and care coordination services. Specific training and documentation requirements must be met.

Goudrea Named Associate Dean for Research in College of Osteopathic Medicine
John Goudreau has been named the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine's associate dean for research. He also will be the co-director of the DO-PhD training program, a combined degree program where students are trained to become physician scientists.
An associate professor in the departments of neurology and ophthalmology, as well as pharmacology and toxicology, Goudreau is the director of the Movement Disorders Clinic. He also serves as associate department chair for research in neurology and ophthalmology.
An alumnus of the college, Goudreau received his osteopathic doctorate and Ph.D. in neuropharmacology in 1995. He completed a residency in neurology at the Mayo Clinic in 2000, earning the Mayo Brothers Distinguished Fellowship Award. After residency, he completed a movement disorders fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, with a special interest in the genetics of movement disorders and advanced clinical training in the neurophysiology and botulinum toxin treatment of abnormal movements.
Goudreau joined the MSU faculty in July 2001. His research has focused on movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease, and the evaluation of potential genetic and environmental risk factors for the disease, as well as developing effective neuroprotective and therapeutic drugs.

National survey planned to assess current use of osteopathic principles and practice
New insights on how DOs use osteopathic skills in clinical practice will be used to strengthen osteopathic content in certifying board exams.
The 15-member panel of experts charged with improving osteopathic content on AOA board certification exams will meet next week in Chicago to help build an in-depth national survey about how DOs currently employ osteopathic medicine and its principles in their clinical practice.
The nationwide survey, which will likely be conducted in July, is intended to provide a comprehensive look at the specific techniques and philosophies DOs commonly use in patient care.
This information will be used to strengthen content for osteopathically focused certifying board exams as well as inform improvements to osteopathic continuous certification by identifying the knowledge and skills that shape osteopathic-centered medicine, said AOA President William S. Mayo, DO.
"The AOA Board of Trustees committed to meaningfully improving board certification by ensuring its relevance to clinical practice when it agreed to create two pathways to board certification," Dr. Mayo said. "This panel of experts, representing several specialty colleges and certifying boards, is assessing the best ways to measure osteopathic competencies and the contemporary practice of osteopathic medicine."

The Michigan Osteopathic Association's social media "Post of the Week" is a share we posted from the Lansing State Journal (LSJ).
The LSJ published a great article on Robert Ray Jr., a recent graduate from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) who triumphed over a rough upbringing with a dream to be doctor. Or a Ninja.
The inspiring story follows Ray from his childhood, through his graduating high school as a Valedictorian, and his college career at MSUCOM and now, on to emergency medicine residency in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Congratulations to Robert Ray Jr.! We look forward to seeing great things in your career!
