From the Director
How often have you heard the lament, “There’s nothing to do"?

DelawareScene.com lists nearly 140 arts and cultural events taking place in Delaware during the month of May. On average, that’s more than four opportunities for something do to every day. There’s so much going on, it’s impossible to catch it all!

In fact, our staff and grant review panels, as I write this, are in the midst of reviewing more than 100 applications for funding to support arts programming throughout the state: from large well-established arts organizations, to small community-based projects and programs. The support we receive from the General Assembly, the Governor’s office, and the National Endowment for the Arts, allow us to support these programs on behalf of Delawareans and those who visit The First State. We are so fortunate to have a state rich in the abundance of arts and entertainment opportunities.

As spring turns the corner to summer, the arts will not ease up. DelawareScene.com shows that the June calendar is just as packed, including a mix of indoor and outdoor activities. As you shift your pace for the summer months, especially with kids home from school, check out what’s available to you. Whether it be a festival, an exhibition, a concert, or a summer park program, the arts offer it all.

And the next time you hear (or say) “There’s nothing to do,” take a minute to visit DelawareScene.com!

On the Mezzanine
Plein Air by Jim Rehak
Visitors to the Gallery should enter via the courtyard doors on French Street and take the elevators to the Mezzanine level due to renovations in the building. The Gallery will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.
“Plein Air,” an exhibition of local landscape paintings by Jim Rehak, will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery now through May 31, 2019.

“Plein air” painting is the act of painting outdoors and is a style associated with 19 th century French Impressionists. Plein air painters work outdoors to capture landscapes and views in natural light. Rehak chooses his locations to paint by looking for patterns of light, contrast, and color composition.

The exhibition will feature more than 20 oil paintings that depict the Brandywine River, New Castle, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach and other locations across the Delmarva Peninsula in various seasons.
