What's New?
  • The Foundation for Continuing Justice and the Law Firm of Higbee & Associates are pleased to announce the second annual law student writing competition with $3,500 in prizes. More information, including essay topics, competition rules, and how to apply are included on their website. The submission deadline is June 30, 2018. 
     
  • PCD Program Audio: Missed any of our programming this year? This is a reminder that audio (and sometimes video) for many PCD programs is available on the PCD playlist. You can access the playlist through a link in the Symplicity News Feed.

  • Estate Planning 101 Series: Guardianship Basics - Thursday, April 19, 1:30 to 7:30pm, MBA. Learn the fundamentals of adult guardianship law in Massachusetts. Our experienced faculty will guide you through the various steps in the court process -- from completing the initial petition to understanding post-appointment obligations, and much more.  Register (SULS PDR credit)   
     
  • Mediation & Arbitration Essentials: Part III - Wednesday, April 25, 5:30 to 7:00pm, MBA. This is the third and final program in a three-part series covering the essentials of successful mediations and arbitrations. Panelists will include distinguished mediators and/or arbitrators who will bring their experience and wisdom to help practitioners succeed. Part III of the series will focus on the essentials of arbitration.   • Criminal Law District Court Bootcamp - Friday, April 27, 12:00 to 1:30pm, BBA. Join the BBA for a crash course in the fundamental procedures and common practices utilized to handle criminal cases in the District and Municipal Courts of Massachusetts.  From arraignment, pre-trial, motion, and trial sessions, learn how to overcome the most common obstacles and strategies for successful arguments.   • Nuts and Bolts of Litigation Involving Closely-Held Corporations - Friday, May 4, 12:00 to 1:30pm, BBA. "Friday Fundamentals" is the BBA's weekly educational series designed to offer an introduction to the basic legal skills and fundamental knowledge lawyers need to get a foothold and grow in their understanding of a given area of practice. Join the panelists as they discuss typical issues that arise in shareholder disputes in closely-held corporations, including pursuing claims of breach of fiduciary duties, defending against such claims, and measuring/mitigating damages given the realities of the small business model. Register (SULS PDR credit)

  • The Fundamentals of Clear & Effective Writing - Friday, May 18, 12:00 to 1:30pm, BBA. "Friday Fundamentals" is the BBA's weekly educational series designed to offer an introduction to the basic legal skills and fundamental knowledge lawyers need to get a foothold and grow in their understanding of a given area of practice. The program will review strategies for how to write in a clear and organized manner. The panelists will present ideas for achieving a straightforward writing style that effectively communicates the writer's ideas. Register (SULS PDR credit)

  • BLG Legal Writing Workshop - Wednesday, April 18, 5:30 to 7:30pm, Cooley LLP, 500 Boylston Street, Boston. Please join The Boston Lawyers Group and Cooley LLP for a Legal Writing Workshop.  Cooley attorneys will discuss best practices for clear and effective legal writing, share lessons learned, and engage in interactive discussion pertaining to legal writing techniques.  Topics such as using a passive voice, readability, proper citation and other items will be covered in depth. Register 
     
  • Increasing the Diversity Pipeline to Judicial Clerkships - Saturday, April 21, 10:00am to 3:00pm, Northeastern University, Dockser Hall. This new interactive program is designed to familiarize traditionally underrepresented law students with post-graduate career opportunities in the judiciary, and to increase the number of candidates from underrepresented groups who apply for, and who are selected for, judicial clerkships. Lunch will be provided. Please contact Assistant Dean Nima Eshghi or Lisa Brathwaite to RSVP or for additional information about the program.
     
  • BLG Annual Mentor Program - Monday, April 23, 6:00 to 8:00pm, Goodwin, 100 Northern Avenue, Boston. The Boston Lawyers Group Mentor Program is designed to assist law students with identifying and expanding their legal career options. Towards that goal, the Mentor Program provides these students with the opportunity to develop a relationship with an experienced practitioner from a BLG participating member organization. Eligibility is limited to 100 first and second year law students of color from Boston area law schools. Applications for the 100 available slots will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Mentors and Mentees will be informed of their pairings by email prior to the Mentor Kick-off Reception in April. Attendance to the Mentor Kick-off Reception is mandatory to be considered for the program. Complete the online survey as soon as possible but no later than April 17.
