Robinson-Westchase Neighborhood Library Reopens to Enthusiastic Families

Children at Robinson Library
Children flocked to the new interactive learning stations placed throughout the remodeled Robinson-Westchase Neighborhood Library.

Judson W. Robinson, III - son of the library's namesake (center) - and Cora, his wife, were in attendance along with their grandchildren Kingston (far left) and Farah, along with Rhea Lawson, Houston Public Library executive director (far right).
(From left) Alberto Goveza, Wendy Heger and Ken Black with Page Southerland Page architects posed with HPL's John Middleton and Page's David Quenemoen. The firm's design raised the building's ceiling and makes extensive use of glass to allow more natural light into the library.

Hundreds of young readers and their families turned out to celebrate the recent grand reopening of the Judson W. Robinson, Jr. Westchase Neighborhood Library

A Better Night_s Sleep
Do you know what it feels like to have to work after a night of bad sleep? Unfortunately, children in Houston are going to school tired every day because they do not have beds.

D. Miller & Associates, attorneys at law located in Westchase District at 2610 W. Sam Houston Pkwy. S., is proud to team up with Houston Children's Charity (HCC) to help end this problem. HCC's "A Better Night's Sleep" is the only program that provides new beds and bedding on a monthly basis to children in need.

Both organizations will host a "D.M.A. Cares" kick-off party from 3 to 7 p.m. this Thursday, May 10. KMJQ FM "Majic 102.1" will broadcast live from the event, which will feature raffle giveaways, over-sized board games, a Build-A-Bear station, a food truck, snow cones for the kids and free beer and wine for adults. Best of all, there will be a dunk tank onsite where you can dunk a lawyer! The event is free and open to the public, however, reservations are preferred. RSVP to Mari Balentina at 713-858-3758.

Market Receives Capital Farm Credit Grant
For the second year in a row, Capital Farm Credit, has awarded the Westchase District Farmers Market with a $1,000 grant. Capital Farm Credit awarded 29 grants in 2018 totaling $29,500 to farmers markets across the state.

"Many consumers today have little appreciation for the hard work it takes to put food on our tables," said Jay Stewart, chief lending officer for Capital Farm Credit. "Local farmers markets provide an opportunity to connect and help tell that story. We established the farmers' market grant program to provide these local markets with additional resources they need to support local farmers."

Farmers market manager John Carey accepts at $1,000 grant check from Capital Farm Credit.

Walnut Bend Elementary's Odyssey of the Mind Team Headed to World Finals

Congratulations to the fifth grade students from Walnut Bend Elementary School of Environmental Sciences, who recently won first place at the Texas Odyssey of the Mind state finals. The team advances to compete in the World Finals Competition, which will take place May 23-26 in Ames, Iowa.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program whose mission is to provide creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. One challenge is to build a structure out of balsa wood weighing no more than 15 grams that can hold as much weight as possible.

Walnut Bend Elementary has sent seven qualifying teams to the world finals in seven years and, impressively, all have placed among the top six in the world out of 45 to 50 teams, with three teams earning third-place trophies. This year's team (pictured below, from left) is: Elliot Arntz; Brody Niece (front); Andrew Blair; Ammar Guliyev (front); Penny Blair; Diamon Green (front); Michele Dahlquist; Fatema Al Jawahery; and Hans Winata. You can support the team's trip to Iowa State University by clicking here. All contributions help with the children's travel expenses.
