Fermented milk beverage may help lower blood pressure Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine researchers were featured during the American Physiological Society annual meeting at "Experimental Biology 2018" in San Diego, Cal., for their collaborative work with colleagues in Brazil that suggests that drinking the fermented milk beverage kefir may have a positive effect on blood pressure by promoting communication between the gut and brain.
Mirian Silva-Cutini, a doctoral exchange student and first author of this work, presented the team's findings at the meeting. Silva-Cutini conducted her research at Auburn's College of Veterinary Medicine under the direction of Dr. Vinicia Biancardi, an assistant professor in the department of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology.

Canada's dairy policies still on U.S. NAFTA radar
Reports indicate that a deal on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) could be imminent, but dairy and other agricultural components remain outstanding. Negotiators from the U.S., Canada and Mexico continued to hammer out details of the nearly 20 outstanding chapters this week in hopes of finalizing a deal ahead of Mexico's presidential elections this summer.
The Trump Administration has threatened to impose sanctions on steel and aluminum from Canada and Mexico starting May 1 if not enough progress has been made on NAFTA.
"I think we are reasonably close. Certainly, this has been a very good week," Mexico's Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray said of the talks.

FDA to take 'fresh look' at dairy mislabeling
U.S. Food & Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said his agency is taking a "fresh look" at how to address the mislabeling of imitation dairy products, with misbranded plant products using terms such as "milk," "yogurt," "cheese" and "ice cream." Gottlieb recently said FDA announced a request seeking additional information on the agency's overall approach.
In response to questions from Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D., Wis.) during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing Tuesday, Gottlieb confirmed that FDA statutes state that "milk is defined as coming from a lactating animal." He added that he could agree with Baldwin that the term is being used on products "derived from things that are not from a lactating animal." However, because FDA has not stepped in to prevent the mislabeling, there is now a lot of commercial activity occurring. Baldwin argued that this could be addressed right away if FDA issued guidance to the industry and declared its intent to enforce existing regulations.

EU-Mexico trade deal gives away common cheese names Recently finalized trade deal enacts new restrictions on use of cheese names such as parmesan, muenster and feta.
Mexico appears poised to enact new restrictions on the use of common cheese names such as "parmesan," "muenster" and "feta" for products sold in Mexico -- a development that runs counter to existing trade agreements with the U.S., according to preliminary reports on the European Union-Mexico free trade agreement.
Full details of the agreement have not yet been released, but early information indicates that Mexico will force cheese marketers from Mexico and the U.S. to phase out the use of some generic names, yielding to the EU's desire to monopolize those cheese markets.

Positive results from Coalition efforts
ADSA works with a range of coalitions to advocate for research funding and other policies that will benefit animal agriculture. While these activities don't create major news stories they do help to make a difference for animal agriculture. We are currently pushing to include needed funding for research in the FY19 budget. This is important, but it is also useful to recognize and show appreciation for what has been accomplished as a result of past efforts. To this end we recently joined other members of the Friends of Agricultural Statistics and Analysis (FASA) in a letter to the Chair and Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies to thank them for their strong support for the Economic Research Service (ERS) and the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), as demonstrated by the funding levels provided for the agencies in the FY 2018 Omnibus budget. Support from the committee and committee leadership is critical, so we want to enhance our working relationship. We anticipate the committee support will carry forward In the FY19 budget.
ADSA also recently joined over 20 other scientific and animal industry groups in a coalition letter to the chair and ranking member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, and the House Committee on Energy and Commerce in support of timely reauthorization of an enhanced Animal Drug User Fee Act (ADUFA) that includes expansion of authority for conditional approval for the new animal drugs addressing serious and life-threatening unmet medical needs for major uses in major species. This helped spur action to move the legislation forward. Copies of all coalition letters that ADSA has participated in can be found on the

News and Updates for the 2018 Annual Meeting
Make plans now to attend the Nutrition Models Workshop at the 2018 ADSA Annual Meeting. The National Animal Nutrition Program (NANP) Nutrition Models Workshop will use lectures and exercises to illustrate how mathematical models are constructed, evaluated, and applied toward problems in animal nutrition. Several modeling approaches are covered, but particular emphasis is given to dynamic, mechanistic models. The workshop will give attendees basic fluency in mathematical modeling and, in so doing, advance their use of models in nutrition research.
This workshop has space for only 100 registrants. Register soon because seats for this workshop are filling up quickly.
