Vacation Bible Camp is Almost Here
Tomorrow is the deadline to sign up online for our voyage to Mars and beyond! We invite 4k (by September 1st, 2018) through 5th graders to join us. During Vacation Bible Camp we will go on a journey through space using music, crafts, games, skits, Bible Study, science, and more to explore where God's power can take us. VBC will be next week, June 10-14, from 9:00-12:00 each day.

Please let the church know if you are not able to pay for VBC. We do not want any child to miss this great experience because of money.

VBC Break Room
We can use your help for the VBC break room. Each year during VBC we provide drinks and snacks for the 250+ volunteers and teen helpers. This year we are in need of 2-liter drinks (Diet Coke, Coke, Sprite, Sunkist, Root beer, etc.), chips, cookies, crackers and candy. We have a box designated for this in the church office and on the preschool floor. If you would like to donate perishable items (fruit, dips, breakfast casseroles, brownies, muffins, donuts, veggie trays, etc.) we will take those the week of VBC in the Lighthouse kitchen area located on the 2nd floor. Thanks in advance for your help! If you have questions, please contact Kim Harper (615-525-6622).
Elementary Awards Assembly
Our elementary ministry had a great awards assembly for our 1st - 5th graders this past Sunday. They played memory verse games, gave out certificates and movie gift cards to our children with the highest Sunday School attendance, awarded electric scooters to our memory verse winners, and even had a little fun with some trivia for our teachers! Thank you to all of the Sunday School teachers who choose to teach our children!
Senior Sunday 2019 Recognition
On Sunday, May 19, our graduating seniors came together to be honored and celebrated by their families and friends in the 11:00 traditional service in the Sanctuary. These students served as leaders in the service through delivering prayers, reading scripture, and bringing the morning messages. Bill Brunson closed this special service with a blessing of the senior class and a prayer for their futures.

We are also happy to announce this year's winners of the Mel Sparkman Scholarship, Nathan Watson and Madison Murrell. This award recognizes students with passionate commitments to community service, their church family, and their own faith journeys throughout their years with Thrive Student Ministry.

We are so proud of all of our seniors, and we are so excited to see where God leads each of them in college and beyond. Thank you to the junior parents who helped sponsor the beautiful reception in honor of our seniors.
Discovery Weekend 2019
Registration for Discovery Weekend is now open! Discovery is a jam-packed, three-day weekend of messages, worship, small group discussions, and activities designed to jump start the school year and help our students continue to make their faith their own. It is designed for high schoolers to develop leadership skills and pour into middle schoolers by leading D-Groups, sharing in messages, and in worship. Discovery is the most exciting, spirit filled, and fun weekend your student will attend all year! So come be a part of this amazing weekend August 2-4! For more information, or if you would like to volunteer, contact Alice Bell Baker ([email protected] / 769-0137).

Reunited and It Feels So Good
Just like the great hymn taught us, let us break bread together! Throughout the month of July we will be reuniting many of the services down in Tyson Hall. To kick off this move we will be hosting our annual Independence Day concert on July 7 as we bring back Three On A String to perform in the 8:30 and 11:00 am services.

Here is the summer worship schedule for July 1 to July 28:
  • 8:30 am - Tyson Hall
  • 9:45 am - Sanctuary
  • 11:00 am - Tyson Hall
On August 4, everything should be back to our original worship spaces, with the Discovery Weekend service in the Sanctuary at 9:45 am. So, join everybody for worship during the rest of summer!
Three On A String Sunday
The popular Birmingham-based ensemble Three on a String is celebrating their 48th anniversary with lively back to back performances here at Vestavia Methodist. Each service will feature the delightful mix of folk, jazz, bluegrass, gospel, and country music with a generous helping of humor for which the group is so well known.
Join us in worship on Sunday, July 7, as Three-On-A-String leads us at both the 8:30 and 11:00 am services in our brand-new Tyson Hall. You won't want to miss this exciting Sunday in the life of our church.
Showstoppers Summer Camp
Tomorrow is the last chance to sign up for Showstoppers Camp! This camp will focus on promoting performance skills through learning specific songs, dances, and scenes from established musicals. Elements of singing, dancing, and acting will be rehearsed each day with a performance for the parents at the end of the camp. Both boys and girls ages 11-16 are encouraged to sign up! The camp is June 10-14 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

Summer Music Lessons
The Conservatory is now registering for summer music lessons. Want to take voice lessons, learn to play the saxophone, clarinet, piano, guitar, or ukulele? What about the viola, violin, or cello? We also offer percussion, brass, and flute lessons. Let us know what you would like to learn to play. The COA welcomes students and adults alike to sign up for lessons on your preferred instrument. Lessons in the summer are more flexible, so you will work out the exact days and times that you can come with your music teacher. For more information, contact Ellen Bryant ([email protected] / 769-0123).

Godspell Auditions
Auditions for our upcoming musical, Godspell, will be held June 9-10. The production dates for this wonderful musical based on the Gospel of Matthew will be August 8-11. All people ages 12+ are invited to audition. Please send audition requests to Quint Harris ([email protected]).
VHUMC is Growing
Last week, we had 11 families (19 individuals) join VHUMC and 3 baptisms. Our love for God and love for one another is fueling this growth, just as the Bible told us it would! Let's seek these new members out and welcome them (in the worship services they attend):

Parent's Night Out
Parent's Night Out is a laity led ministry designed to enrich the marriages of couples with children ages 3 months through 5th grade by providing a loving, safe, and fun-filled time for their children while parents enjoy an evening out together. It's "families helping families grow stronger." We are currently accepting registrations for limited space for the 2019-20 school year. For more information, email Julie Bray ([email protected]).
New Creative Writing Class
Everyone has their own unique story. Want to learn how to express yourself better? This summer we have a new writing class called "The Story in You" where you can learn how to be a better writer. Classes will be taught by former Jefferson County school teacher Lisa Coleman.

  • High School Class - Thursdays from 1:00-2:00 pm beginning July 11 for four weeks. Fee: $70

Birth of the Church
Having risen from the dead, Jesus Christ has appeared to His disciples and instructed them saying, "Remain in Jerusalem until you are filled with power from Heaven!" Waiting in prayer as Jesus has commanded them, the time comes when the Holy Spirit is poured out upon them with great power and wonder! Follow the small band of early Christian believers as they boldly proclaim Christ and His message in the face of great opposition resulting in the growth of the church and the unexpected conversion of its most zealous enemy. Based on the Book of the Acts of the Apostles Chapters 1-9. People of all ages will be inspired by this powerful and moving depiction of the first Christians.

Be sure to register for this free resource! Text rightnow vhumc to 41411 to get your link to create a profile. Then watch 2,000+ Bible studies, talks, kids shows, youth studies, and movies. You can also contact Suzanne Scott-Trammell ([email protected]) if you have questions.

Honoring Church Membership
Some of you have wondered how we handle priority registration for Vestavia Day School and some of our events when we anticipate that available slots will fill up quickly. We always want to make sure that our faithful, active members don't miss the opportunity to participate.

Some time ago, we adopted a policy that gives priority registration to a member who has:
  • Been a member of VHUMC for at least one year.
  • Had their attendance recorded in Sunday School or the worship service pew pads 1/4th of the time.
  • Given a minimum of $1,000 a year to the church as a donation (not as payment for services).
This seems a fair measure to use in giving priority registration to our members. For those who have (or plan to have) children involved at VHUMC, we highly encourage you to register your attendance and if you contribute in cash, please use an offering envelope.

If you have questions about this policy, please contact Gary Wyatt ([email protected] / 769-0108).
Ongoing Outreach
Food Pantry
Food Pantry desperately needs a new refrigerator, preferably with a top freezer. We have had one repaired but it is out again. We also have an abundant supply of bags right now. Thank you so much, but please save them for later.
