Summer Worship Theme: "Yes, And"
We live in a society of either/or, us or them, this or that, winning or losing, success or failure. Yet, what we are beginning to understand in our sciences of living systems, physics, and metaphysics is that this world was created, creates, and recreates in the mysterious dance of relationship. Interactions upon interactions are the creating drivers of this world. Wisdom teachers from Lao Tzu, to adrienne maree brown, to indigenous peoples around the globe have said as much: This world is more "Yes and..." than "either/or." In the months of summer, when creativity and emerging life is hard to miss, we will explore the spiritual imperative of Yes, and. How do we engender curiosity and listening as our default response? What kind of spiritual practices might buoy our hearts, and create our capacity for joy? How might this community of faith make our shoulders strong, keep our hearts open, and join together as an island of sanity and solidarity? Join us in the Yes, and...
Flower Communion Sunday Podcast
Recap by First U staff member Liz Farmer:

Flower Communion is an early-summer tradition of Unitarians and Universalists. The ritual is a metaphor for the diversity, connectedness, and beauty of our community. In this service, we honored the participation, learning, and work of the many leaders, teachers, facilitators, planners, and more through this celebration of giving and receiving blessings.

CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS
June 9: Lunch and an Outdoor Puppet Show!
First Universalist is excited to host Open Eye Figure Theatre's Driveway Tour production of "Ms. Marvel's Sandbox Circus" on Sunday, June 9 at 1 p.m.! This all-ages outdoor puppet show features the cat Ms. Marvel, a madcap, merry-maker that lives and prowls the neighborhood. Every summer, Ms. Marvel transforms the sandbox into an amazing circus where a cavalcade of antics, thrills, chills, and spills await. Step right up to Ms. Marvel's Sandbox Circus and witness the Acrobatic Ants, the Daredevil Squirrel, the Caterpillar Catapult and the Earthworm Orchestra!

The children of Religious Education invite the whole community to join us at 11:30 a.m. for a BBQ lunch following the worship service (vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available) and stay for the show at 1 p.m.! It's open to all (invite your friends!) and free to attend. Lunch and lemonade sales will help cover costs, and free-will donations are encouraged. Bring your lawn chair - we'll be outside in the parking lot for lunch and the show. In case of rain, we'll move inside.

Open Eye Figure Theatre's award-winning Driveway Tour performs all-ages outdoor puppet shows in backyards, front yards, and parks throughout the Twin Cities, bringing communities together with original family-friendly theatre.
Final Wellspring Info Session
Tuesday, June 18, 7-7:45 p.m.
Wellspring is a uniquely Unitarian Universalist program of spiritual deepening that offers the opportunity to learn more about ourselves and our faith through a year-long small group experience. It has five components: commitment to a daily spiritual practice, monthly spiritual direction, small group meetings, reading about the theological and historical foundations of our faith, and putting our faith into action.
Attendance at an info session is required if you wish to participate in Wellspring for the 2019-2020 year. The final information session will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18 - please join us to learn more!
"Dakota 38" Screening
Sunday, June 23, 11:30 a.m.
Join the Racial Justice Education Team for a screening of the documentary "Dakota 38." This drop-in screening will include facilitated discussion and light snacks. In 2005, Jim Miller, a Native spiritual leader, found himself in a dream riding on horseback across South Dakota. Just before he awoke, he arrived at a riverbank in Minnesota and saw 38 of his Dakota ancestors hanged. This moving documentary follows Jim and a group of native riders on a 330-mile healing journey across South Dakota to Minnesota, retracing the route of his dream on horseback to arrive at the hanging site on the anniversary of the execution.

Summer Ushers Needed!
We need ushers for 10 a.m. summer services - please sign up now! Whether you're new to First Universalist or have been around for a long time, ushering is a great way to connect with people and help create a welcoming space for all who visit our church.

Sing in Summer Choir
Do you like to sing? Have you thought about being in a choir, but can't make an extended commitment? Summer Choir may be just right for you. The Summer Choir is scheduled to sing in services on June 16, July 21 and August 25. Rehearsals are at 9 a.m. on the day of the service, and music is easy enough to learn in the 45 minute rehearsal. All are welcome. If you have any questions, contact Randy at [email protected].
Peace Literacy Educator Training June 21-22
The Peace Literacy Education Team at First Universalist Church has charted a course to make the Twin Cities one of the nation's first Peace Literacy hubs - with a goal of making education in Peace Literacy a Universal Human Right by 2028, just as education in reading and writing literacy became a Universal Human Rights in 1948.

The team invites you to a free workshop taking place at First Universalist on Friday June 21 and Saturday June 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

The purpose of the workshop is to inspire and empower Twin Cities teachers, counselors, social workers, community educators, charter school leaders, home-schooling parents, pre-school teachers, public and private school leaders to create a values-centered and trauma-informed education community.

Workshop leaders are Paul K. Chappell, Director of Peace Literacy Education at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation in Santa Barbara, CA, and Dr. Sharyn Clough, Professor of Philosophy, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon,

Continuing Education Credit Units will be available. School teams are encouraged!  Educators from greater Minnesota and out-of-state are welcome.  The workshop is an ecumenical space with no religious affiliation endorsed or assumed  by the workshop facilitators.
