As we settle into our Memorial Day weekend, I would like to take a moment to introduce our new Memorial Elementary School Assistant Principal for the 2019-2020 school year. It will be no easy task to replace someone who has meant so much to our school community as Mrs. Johnson steps into a well deserved retirement from her current role. However, I am also excited to welcome back a familiar face in Jill Lizier, who has written a brief bio to introduce herself below. Please join me in welcoming Jill to a place she warmly refers to as "home".
I hope you enjoy the long weekend!
Mr. McCluskey

Hello Memorial School Community,
My name is Jill Lizier. I am honored to be selected as your Assistant Principal for the 2019-2020 school year. I started teaching at Memorial School in 2008 as a first grade teacher. In 2016, I left Memorial School to work for Swasey Central School in Brentwood, NH as their Curriculum Coordinator and have been there for the past three school years. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Masters in Education from the University of New Hampshire. I am completing a CAGS in Educational Leadership from Plymouth State University. My experience as a teacher and curriculum coordinator has me prepared and excited to be your Assistant Principal.
I live in Exeter, NH with my husband, Christian, and two young daughters, Jane and Elle. We love to be outdoors together. We often find ourselves on fun “adventures” throughout New Hampshire.
I am very happy to be a part of the Memorial School community. The students, staff, and families are like no other. I will work hard to serve as your Assistant Principal of Memorial School!

Students and staff ended the day today with a Memorial Day assembly. Memorial School was fortunate to welcome a number of active military and veterans from all branches of the military. A huge thank you to Mrs. Perkins and the 4th grade students who put on a wonderful show.
|
|
As we head into the Memorial Day weekend, we reflect on all that we have to be thankful for and want to thank all Veterans for their service to our country.
|
|
Abigail Snell was the PE teacher for the day and led classes and gave demonstrations for multiple grades. She also helped Mr. McKenney with his duties as student council advisor and ran the weekly meeting and helped to organize the schedule for the upcoming month.
Thank you very much to Abigale!

Adventures in Kindergarten
The kindergarten students have grown in many ways throughout this school year. The students came into Memorial school for the first time having to get to know about their new school, make new friends, and adjust to a busy day filled with movement, academics, and discovery. Our year has been very successful. Students have had the time to learn with each other, participate in unified arts, and participate in enrichment and reteaching opportunities. These are only a few of the wonderful, positive things that have happened this year. We are very proud of our students and the excellent job they have done with their first year at Memorial School!
Recently we have done an introduction to informational text. The students looked at the text features that make informational books special. The students know that informational books teach you something, usually have real photographs, and captions. The students will continue to work with informational text as we start our study of Animals. Each student will be learning about personally selected animals they are interested in. The personalized nature of this unit gives us the opportunity to use cooperative learning where we will teach each other about the animals we each focused on. We are excited to have our students engaged in this rich learning experience.
The classrooms will also begin using the work of beloved children’s author Eric Carle. He is the author of many stories that complement our work with animals. The literature is playful and engaging for the students. We will also be illustrating as Eric Carle does. The students will participate in a project of designing the papers just as Eric Carle does to create his colorful illustrations. Be on the lookout for these imaginative animal masterpieces at Student Led Conferences.
In Science, Kindergarten has been exploring the forces of pushes and pulls. Students have participated in a variety of investigations. Our most recent investigation was for students to determine the quickest way down a slide by using three types of force; no-push, self-push, and partner push. The partner push resulted in the fastest time. We used pieces of the Scientific Method and students completed a data collection sheet for their science notebooks. Students were highly engaged and excited to participate in this investigation.

News from the Health Office
|
|
Immunization Requirements for Fifth grade students:
Please be advised that when your child is age 11 years or older, and it has been 5 years or longer since their last Tetanus toxoid-containing immunization, they must receive a booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine. If your child has a documented medical contraindication to pertussis vaccine, a Td booster is acceptable. In addition, every child entering grade 6 must have had (2) doses of Varicella vaccine (chicken pox). If your child had the disease of chicken pox, this must be listed with the date of the disease on a recent physical history and exam form completed by your child’s health care provider. If your child is 11 years old, and has already received these immunizations, please provide a copy of the latest physical exam and updated immunization record to the health office as soon as possible. This may be faxed to the school nurse at 603-382-1466. If your child has a well-child visit scheduled, please discuss these requirements with the doctor at the time of the visit, and provide a copy of this physical and updated immunization record to the school nurse.
Medication Pick Up
As the end of the school year is quickly approaching, I’d like to remind all parents/guardians that if your child has medications in the health office they need to be picked up by the end of the school year. The last day to pick them up will be June 13th. After June 13th all medications left in the health office will be discarded. Please email or call me if you have any questions at 603-382-5251 ext. 106
Thank you,

Fit & Lit Club with Mrs. U & Mrs. Collins
|
|
Fit and Lit is a new club that started this Spring at Memorial. This is our first attempt at combining reading, walking, and talking. With some suggestions from fourth and fifth graders, two books were picked and once a week we take turns reading out loud to each other and then we read silently in the comfy chairs and bean bags in the library, and then we get in some movement.
Fourth graders met in April and unfortunately due to our rainy spring did most of their “fit” piece inside walking the hallways and doing jumping jacks in the library. They read the book,
The World According to Humphrey
by Betty G. Birney. One fourth grader, Rosa Y said,
“If you like fantasy and animals and if you like suspense and adventure….” you should read this book . Rosa’s favorite part is when Humphrey goes home with the classroom teacher for Thanksgiving and she says to her husband, “I thought you’d wear clothes today.” Jackson D. said that the best part of the book is when Humphrey escapes and when the principal has to take him home for the weekend.”
Rosa and Jackson both said that this book reminds them of
Enemy Pie
by Derek Munson and anyone who likes that book will definitely like this book.
|
|
The club members all made characters from the book out of model magic and put them on display in the library.
|
|
Fifth grade is halfway through their club and they have been been able to enjoy some nice days outside. They are reading
Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson
which is a book that talks about the transition from elementary school to middle school and how tricky it can be to meet new friends and keep the old. It’s a graphic novel and the girls are flying through the book.

As we get ready for this Memorial Day weekend, we would like to thank our military families in the Newton and surrounding communities for their service and sacrifice, and we honor those who have served and died for our country and our freedom.
We would like to thank the Memorial PTO once again for their generosity during Staff Appreciation week, and especially for our new 10" fry pan! We love it!!
Our menu for the remainder of the year is now posted, and the students are in for some special meals! The Nutrition Committee met last week and designed the menu for the week of June 3-7, and June 10 and 11. The students will enjoy "Cena's Collaboration", a deli sandwich with all the fixings on June 4, followed by "Jacqueline's Nacho' Average Lunch". On Thursday we will serve "Gabby's Glorious Pancakes", and we will finish up the week with "Molly's Marvelous Mozzarella Sticks". On Monday June 10, "Luke's Lazy Lasagna" is on the menu, followed by "Summer's Taco Tuesday". We will also be serving up some special treats for our last week! Thank you to the Nutrition Committee for your great ideas.
Please enjoy your Memorial Day weekend, and if you have any questions or concerns, please contact JoAnne in the kitchen anytime at 382-3326.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION UPDATES
WOW, it is almost the end of the year and it has been a great year for Box Tops!
As of April 30th, the total of Box Tops collected is 10,191 vs 7,360 last year. That means that you helped raise $1,019.10 that will go towards enrichment for Memorial School students. We still have May's Box Tops to add to that.
In a brief recap, the standings at this point show Mrs. Doucett's class is leading the pack for the Ice Cream party with 1,222 Box Tops, Mr. LaPorte’s class is in second place with 1,022. Mrs. Patkin's class is in the lead for the fourth quarter contest but May's Box Tops can change all that.
The grade that has collected the most Box Tops overall is…5
th
!! In total, they have collected 2,552 Box Tops! Now that is a number that deserves celebrating.
Since May ends for us on Friday the 31st, I will collect the envelopes at the end of school, Monday June 3.
Each little pink BOX TOP on those General Mills, Hefty, Ziploc, Annie's, Paper Mate, Reynolds, Nestle Pure Life, Finish, Lysol, Chex, Nature Valley, Fiber One, Go Gurt, Yoplait products gives Memorial School 10¢. Whether you send in one or one thousand you are helping our school give our kids a school experience that will stay with them for a lifetime.
