Overview of strokes, with a special emphasis on the management of the motor and non-motor symptoms caused by this condition and how to provide quality care in response to these symptoms. Attendees will learn various ways to manage such symptoms and help prevent future strokes, through the perspective of using empathic communication, care, and supportive rehabilitation services. At the end of the course, attendees will be equipped with the necessary skills to care for an individual who has survived a stroke.

The instructor will review health care needs of residents living in residential care settings and how to manage oversight of care needs.

 Coping with Grief and Loss as a Professional (2 hours) Meets Subject Code 05 - Community & support services

Loss of functional abilities and death of residents are part of working in adult and elderly residential care. Attendees will learn the definition and stages of grief as well as to recognize its various manifestations.  Appropriate behaviors and boundaries for staff interactions with grieving families and residents will be reviewed.  Ideas and tools for managing and supporting grief among staff will also be reviewed.  A group discussion will be held to share challenges and best practices to support staff in understanding their feelings while having a sustainable career in their field.

Presenter will discuss the RCFE and ARF Resident Rights by the State Department of Social Services. Just as we all are guaranteed certain freedom and rights under federal and state laws, residents in residential care facilities for the elderly are guaranteed additional rights because of physical or cognitive limitations.
