June Is All About Seniors!

Grand Opening of Oakley Senior Center / Elder Awareness Event

The Oakley Seniors are hosting the much-anticipated opening of their new Oakley Senior Center, a place where seniors can connect to resources and have access to services, a critical element in preventing elder abuse.

Thousands of purple flags, representing the number of reports
of elder abuse in Contra Costa County in 2018, will flank the
grounds outside the new Oakley Senior Center on Friday, June 21.

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, and the flags are a reminder of its prevalence in our community.

The Senior Resource Fair will follow the flag planting so seniors and their family members can learn about services and resources available from representatives of agencies that serve older adults.

Supervisor Burgis hopes you'll join us for a morning full of information for everyone about elder abuse.

Supervisor Burgis will speak at the event and there will be a ribbon cutting as well.

Census2020 News

Supervisor Burgis and Supervisor Glover (District 5)  in partnership with The Sanford Institute of Philanthropy, John F. Kennedy University, The San Francisco Foundation, Candid (an innovative merger of The Foundation Center and GuideStar) and Antioch Community Foundation  held an  East Contra Costa County Nonprofit Capacity Building Workshop,  May 30th and 31st at  Antioch Community Center.

Nonprofits in East Contra Costa County are working diligently to respond to community challenges and advancing many causes that create opportunity for all. In an era of growing need and shrinking government resources, nonprofits are being asked to do more with less.

Supervisors Diane Burgis and Federal Glover invited local nonprofits to partner with them in supporting organizational capacity building needs, specifically in time for Census 2020.

Participants engaged in a two-day training workshop inclusive of facilitated needs assessment combined with state-of-the-art training in fundraising to help organizations be mo re successful in outreach, grants management, and donor cultivation.

Participants also engaged in an interactive, cross-organizational conversation about strategies for building a diverse team of leaders and volunteers and for reaching hard to serve and underserved populations in East Contra Costa.

The stakes are high for East Contra Costa and this calls for a focused, more strategic collaborative approach to capacity building. You are invited to join and be part of an exciting effort.
What they learned:
Day One nonprofits heard from leaders on the state of the U.S. Census 2020, followed by a panel of nonprofit leaders on lessons and opportunities for their organization to help ensure a successful Census 2020,

Day Two focused on fundraising capacity building skills provided by Candid and the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy that provided considerable value for their organization's sustainability.

Animal Services Micro-Chipping Event
The 4th and 5th of July are the busiest days of the year at Contra Costa Animal Services. Many pets are frightened by the fireworks and end up in the shelter.

In order to prepare for the upcoming holiday, Supervisor Burgis' office parking lot was the scene for our low-cost microchip clinic this past Saturday.

The clinic was a wild success, we microchipped approximately 70 pets in three hours!

Those are now 70 pets that will forever be returned to their owners, if they ever become lost - keeping them out of our crowded shelters. The gratitude and appreciation from the residents that attended the clinic was overwhelming.

Two more $5 microchip clinics are coming up in Contra Costa County. The community is invited to take advantage of these reduced cost microchip clinics to make sure you're able to reconnect with your pet if he/she ever escapes.

The next two dates:

June 15 - Davis Park
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
1661 Folsom Ave, San Pablo

June 22 - Concord Police Department
11:00 am - 2:00 pm
1350 Galindo St, Concord
