In the spirit of gratitude we're dedicating this month's Newsletter to the talented female members of our JAX Family. In the early days at JAX Refrigeration we had only one female employee on our roster... now have 17. The U.S. Department of Labor recently reported that the growth rate for job opportunities within the HVAC industry have risen to an all-time high. We're happy to be a part of that growing trend! One employee in particular, Joy Bardin, has served as a guiding force for our ever-changing company. Through her impeccable organization, practiced patience, leadership and dedication, Joy has become one of JAX's greatest assets. Read on to learn more about how Joy and the other strong women at JAX have helped to make our company what it is today.
Joy Bardin, VP of Administration
Meet Joy Bardin
(aka the glue that holds JAX Refrigeration together)

Vice President of Administration, Joy Bardin joined JAX in 2011 as Director of Operations. Her role within the business has steadily grown, as the years have passed by and today she holds a critical role as a member of the JAX Refrigeration Executive Team. Joy's close oversight and management of the day-to-day functions have made her a critical asset in the success of the company. Her acute oversight of HR, Operations, Employee Wellness, Fleet Management and New Office Construction requires patience, skill, and a knack for excellent time management.

During Joy's tenure, JAX Refrigeration has received ample recognition for growth, safety and philanthropy. JAX has been named to the Jacksonville Business Journal’s Fast 50 List for 6 years in a row. JBJ has also recognized JAX on their Annual Lists for Engineering, HVAC, General Contractor, Private Company, and as a Partner in Philanthropy. Along with the company's recognition, JAXCares has been named one of Jacksonville Magazine's Companies with Heart for 3 years in a row.

Joy is the incoming Chairwoman for the First Coast Blessings in a Backpack Board of Directors. She has been nominated to serve on the Board of Directors for the DePaul School, as well as serving on the leadership on the Missions Committee for the Redeemer Anglican Church.

Joy Bardin has enjoyed a rewarding 25+ year career in the Construction Contracting Industry. In the past 9 years with JAX Refrigeration, her contributions have been instrumental in the numerous successes the company has enjoyed. In addition to the company's numerous awards and recognition, Joy has been involved in the creation, orchestration, and management of all charitable efforts that JAX Refrigeration has proudly made to improve the lives of so many in our Jacksonville community, and beyond.

Joy Bardin was involved in the original inception and creation of the JAXCares Foundation (JAX Refrigeration's 501c3 nonprofit that provides necessary resources to organizations that support those facing life's challenges in our community). Because of Joy's strong philanthropic leadership, she has organized packing events which have provided over 57,000 hunger-free weekends to students in Duval and St. John’s County schools, through the First Coast Blessings in a Backpack program. JAX Refrigeration employees have contributed countless hours to these packing events alone. Her impact in the community can be seen through Blessings' fundraising events and shared time with local children and families. Joy’s involvement in the various boards and committees relating to community and charitable efforts is quite impressive, given her numerous responsibilities within JAX Refrigeration.

"Joy is an integral part of our organization. She is loyal, trustworthy and has the unique ability to manage nearly every position at the Company as needed. We would not have been able to grow as a company without her.
I am eternally grateful that I met Joy over 17 years ago, and have had the pleasure of building this Company together." ~ Mark A. Lowery, President & Founder

“I feel that Joy Bardin means much more to JAX than what is captured in the information above. She possesses incredible value and dedication, and gives more of herself to the company and community than anyone I know. We are very fortunate to have Joy with us, and I would like to THANK her for all that she does.” ~ Craig Callahan, Director of Business Development
The WOMEN of JAX Refrigeration
We have so many incredibly talented and skilled women on our Team, and we love having them as part of our workforce. They, too, enjoy their jobs and being part of the JAX Family... but don’t take our word for it. Read for yourself:
Leigh Ann Austin, Licensing & Compliance Coordinator

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[LA] I have a very large tattoo on my rib cage (which is known to be a very painful spot to get tattooed). Most people are very surprised to learn this bit of info about me because they don’t think I’m a tattoo kind of person.
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[LA] The most challenging part of the job is to gather all the necessary information for permits. Each city & state wants something a little different than the other and it can be a challenge to navigate that.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[LA] I feel appreciated when other members of the JAX team take the time to stop at the front desk and say hi.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[LA] It can be a challenge to work in a male-dominated industry because some men don’t always see the value a woman can bring to the table. Sometimes women have to work twice as hard to prove what they are capable of.
Barb Costanzo, Payroll/Administrative Assistant

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[BC] I am a great grandmother who still loves to ride 4 wheelers.
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[BC] The most rewarding is being able to help others.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[BC] Everyone is always thankful for me to simply do my job which is really nice.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[BC] I have always worked in a traditionally male dominated industry so for me it is just another day at the office.
Nicole Evans, Project Accountant

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[NE] I lived/worked in Central America for two years (biologist and teacher).
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[NE] Discerning which is the most relevant data and for whom on a daily basis.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[NE] Working together in meeting our department’s deadlines. Words: Guidance, At-a-boys and Thank Yous.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[NE] All depends on the character of the male (same as it depends on the character of a female) for whom you are working.
Laci Hay, Credit & Collections Analyst

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[LH] I wanted to be an Attorney. When I started school I quickly discovered it wasn’t my path. I ultimately ended up in Credit/Collections. While not a job in the legal world I still deal with a lot of legal issues day-to-day that pertain to the company. So this has been a win-win situation for me and has allowed me to truly love my job.
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[LH] It is always a challenge to collect money. The rewarding part is being able to set goals and challenge myself to meet those goals. The best part of Credit/Collections is that numbers don’t lie, my work shows in numbers. It’s amazing to see those numbers changing for the better or showing me where I need to improve.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[LH] JAX welcomed me after my separation from Metl-Span. It was amazing feeling to know I had worked so closely with a customer that they asked me to become a part of their team. That was very rewarding that I was thought of as an asset and welcomed aboard.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[LH] I have only worked in a male-dominated industry. I think Marilyn Monroe said it best….“I don’t mind being in a man’s world, as long as I can be a woman in it.” I have always been treated with respect and have never felt being a female in a male-dominated industry held me back.
Michelle Hite, National Service & Parts Manager

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[MH] I love to skydive!
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[MH] It can be a challenge at times to support the field staff. It is very important to me that they feel supported and they feel part of a team. The lines of communication need to be open and clear and they should provided the necessary tools and materials to perform their jobs efficiently.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[MH] Working remotely and not being in the office has it’s challenges, however, the JAX Team is always available to support me with whatever needs I have.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[MH] I have worked in this industry for 20 years. It has been very exciting to see it grow to include so many strong, hard-working women. I look forward to seeing more female growth in the future.
Renee Lueck, Account Manager

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[RL] I love to cook.
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[RL] The most challenging part of my job has been learning to read blueprints. The most rewarding part is seeing the field guys and Megan succeed and doing take-offs for estimates.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[RL] Everyone at JAX is always helpful and appreciative, we are a wonderful team.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[RL] It’s been great. The guys have treated me with respect and I think the industry needs more women.
Courtney Machael, Credit & Collections Analyst

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[CM] I am a mom of 2 girls!
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[CM] The most challenging part would be providing correct information. Running Reports and calculating numbers in between can leave room for lots of error, but I love doing it. The most rewarding part is be meeting/working with a group of girls who know how to get things done!
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[CM] When I first started at JAX I was working part time, JAX gave me the opportunity to prove myself as a full time employee in a much more advanced position.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[CM] Starting at JAX there were maybe 5 women in the office, looking around now we have twice as many. If it wasn’t for us women, JAX wouldn’t be JAX. We do it all, from the Accounting, dispatching Service Technicians, providing information for the PM’s/ Executives, making sure people are paid correctly and timely, and so much more! Males may be the face, but the females run the show!
Megan Poff, IMP Installer

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[MP] I enjoy riding motorcycles and horses. My previous job was working on a horse farm tending to a herd of forty horses.
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[MP] The most challenging has been learning several new skills, the team that I am with are very good at taking a moment to explain what needs to be done and ensuring that I am properly trained. The most rewarding is the ability to look back on a project and know that I had a part in putting it all together. I also love the skills I have learned in the workplace that I can now apply in everyday situations.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[MP] The team at JAX has made me feel more appreciated than most jobs I had in the past. It is a great feeling to be able to work alongside the crew and be treated as one of their own. I may not have the lifting capacity of some of the men, but the work I do contributes immensely.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[MP] For me personally it has truly boosted my confidence and feeling of self-empowerment. I have had heavy workloads before but the skills I have learned while working with JAX have had a positive affect on my growth as a young woman. The men I work alongside treat me very equal as long as I’m willing to get my hands dirty!
Catherine Price, Service Coordinator

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[CP] My husband and I have been to every Welcome to Rockville concert. It is the one thing I look forward to most every year. I love being able to get away from whatever is going on in my life and feel free to let loose.
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[CP] Making sure both the techs in the field and our customers have all the information they need to be successful and happy.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[CP] My field techs and managers let me know every day how much they appreciate the job I do for them.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[CP] Other than the occasional “sweetie or honey” I feel like one of the guys. Even though I know this industry is mostly male I never feel out of place.
Michelle Smith, Project Coordinator/APM

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[MS] I like woodworking projects.
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[MS] Being able to finish a project and see others succeed around me.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[MS] Including me on group decisions and asking for my opinion/thoughts on how to come up with solutions.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[MS] I like working in this fast-paced industry and have been welcomed with open arms by all my colleagues, men and women alike.
Angela Tennant, Controller

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[AT] I love sledding…not so easy to do in Florida, but so much fun when I lived in Colorado.
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[AT] The most challenging part of my job is keeping up with emails! The most rewarding part is working with the talented Accounting Team.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[AT] I think JAX has done a great job showing appreciation for all the employees during COVID.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[AT] Since my first job out of college, I have been in construction. I am fortunate in my career to not experience any bias from my male peers because I am a woman, maybe through difference of personalities, but not because I am a woman.
Cyaira Tyler, Project Manager

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[CT] I am terrified to fly. Travel is a big part of my job, so that keeps things interesting.
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[CT] The most challenging part of my job trying to juggle the amount of work. We’ve been very busy and it’s sometimes hard to balance everything.
The most rewarding is two fold: making or keeping a customer happy and the people I get to work with. Josh, Doug, Marlin and Grant are all some of the best people and I feel lucky to work with them everyday.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[CT] Three years ago I was a project coordinator at Jax and now I am a project Manager. I don’t think there is anywhere else that I would get that opportunity or feel more appreciated.
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[CT] It can sometimes be difficult to be taken seriously. When I travel alone, I have to be extremely careful, I can’t stay in bad parts of town and have to remain vigilant. There are societal norms that are different for me in terms of spending time with customers. A male PM could have late dinner and drinks one-on-one with a customer but the same for me might not be appropriate.
With all that being said, it is a great industry and I wish I saw more females in it. Women are generally more detailed and organized which are qualities that make up a great project manager!
Evelyn Yoho, Account Manager, RHVACS

Tell us at least one personal fun fact about yourself.
[EY] I’m a twin - identical!
What is the most challenging/rewarding part about your job?
[EY] Most rewarding part of my job is witnessing on a daily basis the pride our employees have in our company.
How has the team at JAX made you feel noticed or appreciated?
[EY] Being asked for my advice (and taking it, at times).
What is it like to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
[EY] Awesome! I’ve been in this environment my entire career and earning respect goes a long way.
At JAX, SAFETY is our #1 Core Value.
Attention to safety is essential, constant and a team effort.
We've responded to the pandemic with several extra
safety precautions: Read more about our Air filtration system and efforts to distribute masks to our Employees below.
JAX Refrigeration is committed to ensuring the safety and well being of our valued employees. In response to the COVID pandemic, we have researched and are in the process of implementing a state-of-the -art air filtration solution for our HVAC System. Below, we have outlined a few details about this filtration solution. We hope to set a positive example for others to put the health and safety of their employees first.
The REME HALO® in-duct air purifier is the next generation of indoor air quality (IAQ) technology and capable of purifying every cubic inch of air that your central air conditioning system reaches. Designed to eliminate sick building syndrome risks by reducing odors and air pollutants, the REME HALO® in-duct air purifier is the best solution for building air purification.

Invented to recreate nature’s process of purifying the air, it’s like bringing fresh outdoor air inside without ever having to open your windows. And it’s effective against all three categories of indoor air pollutants: Particulates, Microbial and Gases.

The REME HALO® in-duct air purifier utilizes Reflective Electro Magnetic Energy technology. Installed into the supply plenum of your existing air conditioning or heating system air ducts, the REME HALO® in-duct air purifier produces Hydro-Peroxide plasma that is distributed through the air handler, through the duct system and into the conditioned space. Unlike passive air technologies, which need pollutants to pass through the unit for purification or filtration, the REME HALO® in-duct air purifier sweeps through your facility actively purifying pollutants at the source. In addition, the charged plasma induces particles to coagulate or stick together making them bigger and easier for your filter to catch. Hydroperoxides occur naturally in the earth’s atmosphere and are part of nature’s process of cleaning the air.

• Dual ionizers to reduce airborne particulates (dust, dander, pollen, mold spores)
• Kills up to 99% of bacteria, mold and viruses
• REME® reduces sneeze germs by 99% in the time a sneeze can reach three feet.
• New zinc ions kill 99% of viruses on surfaces
• Unlike portable units that are limited to the room in which they are placed, the REME HALO® provides whole building purification.
• Easily integrated with your facility’s existing HVAC system. The unit doesn’t take away usable space and operates silently.
• Incorporates an adjustable shroud around the REME® cell, which allows customization of the advanced oxidation plasma output.
We are always taking steps at JAX to enhance the safety of our employees. We are providing JAX masks for ALL Employees (and of course, Fridgie!) during the pandemic.

Email info@jaxrefrigeration.com to inquire about getting your own mask*.

(*These masks are not medical grade and are not to take the place of N95 masks)

5 Tips to Prep Your HVAC Unit for Winter
In order to keep your HVAC’s heat pump working properly, here are a few tips from us to maximize efficiency, safety, and comfort:

1. Replace the Air Filter
Replacing the air filters all year long is a good habit to improve the health of your HVAC unit. An air filter serves two purposes: keeping particulates and dust out of your HVAC unit as well as filtering the air in your home. Replacing your air filter regularly can drastically prolong the life of your HVAC unit, and using an allergen filter can also improve your indoor air quality. We recommend that you replace your air filter every month for optimum filtering.

2. Clean the Air Ducts
Even with the best filters, the air ducts in your home can collect dust, allergens, mold, and other contaminants throughout the year. When you turn on the heat, these contaminants may react with the heat and their effects can become more severe. Fall is the perfect time to schedule a duct cleaning service to ensure your ducts are ready for the heat.

3. Examine the Belt
Inside your HVAC unit, there is a belt that powers the blower, moving the air through the outdoor compressor. You can check this belt for issues such as cracks or damage. If you see any of these signs, it will need to be replaced. These belts wear down over time, especially in states like Florida, with its high temperatures and prolonged AC use.

4. Inspect the Vents
It’s easy to forget that the vents in your home are an important piece of your HVAC system. Make sure that the vents in your home aren’t blocked by furniture or other items that could obstruct the airflow. Poor airflow to your HVAC unit can cause it to work harder to pump the air, putting unnecessary stress on your unit.

5. Schedule Maintenance
As the winter season approaches, the wisest choice you can make to protect your HVAC unit is to schedule maintenance with a qualified HVAC technician. A technician can inspect all aspects of your unit and knows where to find potential issues that may lead to problems or danger down the line.
