Your Partners in Learning
|
|
Hello Peter Hobart families,
I am grateful for each and every one of you! Over this long weekend I had extra time for reflection, and to be honest, this isolation is getting more difficult and the break overall was hard for me. I missed my family and I missed my friends, and returning to school and I miss seeing the beautiful faces of our students coming in the doors, walking the hallways, learning in classrooms and being busy throughout Peter Hobart. I do look forward to seeing everyone together in one place-- in our online learning community.
So, until we can all be together again in-person...How can we all help each other?
As the weather gets colder and we are spending more time indoors, it is more important than ever that your child stays active, in all their classes and more. They should wear their masks, social distance and if they feel sick stay home. Our ability to provide in-person models in the future relies on how well we follow these protocols when not in school. Your actions matter. We want to see all our students return to in-person learning this year. Working together, we can make this happen.
We are prepared for distance learning and we know they are to. Thank you for extending grace to our teachers and instructional staff along the way. We know COVID-induced conditions have been difficult for students and families. Distance learning will not be easy for everyone. Our job is to support you.
Peter Hobart families, we appreciate your partnership as we continue this journey together.
Hoping for everyone’s good health and peace throughout this time.
We encourage you to check the school district website as new information is always posted there. If you have any questions, feel free to call the Peter Hobart Office at 952-928-6600.

Throughout the year, in grades K-5, students explore various units of inquiry. Each unit lasts approximately six weeks and gives students opportunities to engage with grade-level content standards, new skills, and conceptual understanding. Each transdisciplinary theme is repeated each year with an increased level of rigor and complexity. Here are our current units of study.
Who We Are - An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
1st Grade - Humans have needs
2nd Grade - Everyone has an identity and everyone’s identity is equally important.
How We Express Ourselves - An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.
Kindergarten - Culture can be shared and expressed in many ways (*This unit will span the entire year and will be in conjunction with other units.)
3rd Grade - Different forms of communication influence interactions.
How We Organize Ourselves - An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.
4th Grade - Where people live is connected to resources
5th Grade - Revolution stems from humans desire for change.

Social-Emotional & Community Resources for Families
|
|
As we move into winter, we wanted to be sure you’re aware of the supports available to our community. If you’re interested in any of these supports for your family, please contact Michele Edwins (952) 928-6609 or Cristina Silva Gleason (651) 505-0093.
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SUPPORTS
Relate Counseling Center - School Based Program (Kayla Anderson)
Relate Counseling Center provides school-based mental health services that allows students to receive direct support within the school day. School based therapists can help children work through symptoms, diagnoses, or life circumstances that can disrupt their learning including anxiety and depression; ADHD or other behavioral disorders; difficulty interacting with peers; divorce or other changes in the family system; grief and loss; and more.
Growing Through Grief (Daena Esterbrooks)
Growing Through Grief, a Park Nicollet program, provides counseling services to students weekly in groups and one-to-one counseling sessions. Counselors help students cope with grief brought on by issues of chronic illness, death of a parent, family member or loved one. Growing Through Grief also helps schools respond to sudden, unforeseen tragedies.
CONCRETE NEEDS/FINANCIAL SUPPORTS
The ACT Program (Laura Gorke)
The ACT Program is a free home-visiting program for families in the St. Louis Park School District (early childhood through grade 5) that provides support to families through accessing community resources, parenting support, and support with school concerns.
St. Louis Park Emergency Program (STEP)
The St. Louis Park Emergency Program’s mission is to identify, address and respond to the critical and emergency needs of residents in St. Louis Park. We are the St. Louis Park community food shelf and social service agency. We directly provide food and clothing to residents in need, as well as advocacy, referrals, and build a collaborative relationship. Since 1975, STEP volunteers and professional staff have been empowering lives and restoring hope. Our vision is to be the trusted resource for connecting community members with resources to fulfill their basic needs. If you have a family who could benefit from STEP, the family can call 952-925-4899.
Peter Hobart Financial Grants (Michele/Cristina)
Peter Hobart Elementary School has been given some funding from the Peter Hobart PTO, Birchwood Neighborhood Association, and KOPP Foundation to help support the concrete needs of Peter Hobart students and families. This funding is to be used when other resources such as STEP are not available for the families. This funding could be used for groceries, winter gear, clothing, or other basic needs.

Free Meals Program Information
|
|
As the District begins to transition back to the distance learning model, free meals will continue to be available to students and families. The District will continue to utilize the six school sites as grab-and-go pickup locations on Mondays and Wednesdays between 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Please note that Wednesday, November 18 will be the last day that the Middle School will serve as a free meals distribution site due to the fact that the school kitchen is under construction. The High School and four elementary schools will continue to serve as distribution sites.
Elementary students who continue to attend school in the hybrid model the week of Nov. 16-20, will continue to have access to free breakfast and lunch meals on their in-person learning days. Anyone with questions about the District's free meals program can call the School Nutrition Department at 952-928-6146.
__________________________________________________________________________
Students in households that meet the free or reduced-price meal income guidelines will generate compensatory revenue for the district. Schools must use compensatory revenue to meet the needs of students who are behind their peers, such as remedial instruction, instructional materials including digital learning and technology, bilingual programs and additional teachers and teacher aides. However, the household must complete and return the forms, or complete the online form, no later than December 15 so the district can calculate eligibility and report to the Minnesota Department of Education. This will not impact your students’ eligibility to receive free meals during the 2020-21 school year because meals are free for all students this year.
