District Rehabs Habitat to Attract Butterflies Along Trail


After five years of attracting butterflies to the District's trail system, the butterfly habitat along the Library Loop Trail recently received a much-needed metamorphosis. Workers replaced all of the mulch in the habitat and replanted  agapanthus, red salvia, Mexican bush sage, turks cap, butterfly bush and plumbago.

Butterflies need a variety of plants to support their life cycle. They need a host plant where adult butterflies lay their eggs. When the larvae hatch, they begin eating the leaves of the host plant. The food source enables them to prow, pupate and then become butterflies. Adult butterflies need nectar to survive. They get it from a variety of flowering plants that bloom throughout the year.
"We chose specific plants to serve as the butterfly habitat," said Irma Sanchez, Westchase District vice president of projects. "This mix of colors and textures will appeal to butterflies, which can be seen virtually year-round in Houston."

The butterfly garden is located on the north side of the Library Loop Trail, about a quarter-mile west of Rogerdale Road (near the exercise station).


Regions Bank Opens Branch at 10803 Westheimer Road


On Monday, Alabama-based Regions Bank opened a location in Westchase District at 10803 Westheimer Road (at the southwest corner of Westheimer and Walnut Bend Lane). Located in the Westchase Shopping Center on the site of the former El Palenque Mexican restaurant, the bank is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

In addition to standard ATM services, Video Banking ATMs allow customers to connect with a Regions Video Banker via live, two-way video. Along with processing most general transactions, Regions Video Bankers help customers with account maintenance and general inquiries during expanded hours. Regions Video Bankers are available on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The branch's foyer is accessible after-hours by scanning a debit or credit card with a magnetic stripe for entry.

Free Rabies Vaccines at New Woodlake Pet Hospital

Just in time for the dog days of summer, the Woodlake Pet Hospital recently opened its doors at 9630 Westheimer Road, Suite 400 (at Tanglewilde) in the Woodlake Square Shopping Center, behind Walgreens. 

Prakash Bommala, DVM, and his staff offer free pet exams for new clients and free rabies vaccines and certificates every Saturday. Featuring an in-house lab and pharmacy, the clinic offers preventive care and vaccines, annual wellness exams, surgeries, dentistry and health certificates for USDA-certified pet travel.

Congratulations to Sunny Vohra of CREEM Cupcakes HTX in Sugar Land. His cupcake creations are a finalist in two categories in Edible Houston's Local Hero Awards. He's nominated in the Farmers Market Vendor category and also the Food Artisan category.

Walnut Bend Students Win World Championship


Congratulations to the fourth and fifth grade students from Walnut Bend Elementary School who recently won first place in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Michigan State University. More than 900 teams from around the globe competed May 22 - 25 and Walnut Bend students scored the highest in their division.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program whose mission is to provide creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. One challenge is to build a structure out of balsa wood weighing no more than 15 grams that can hold as much weight as possible. In competition, Walnut Bend's structure held 780 pounds.

WDCF Acknowledged by Alief ISD as Business Partner

Last week, Craig Eichhorn (pictured center), board member with the Westchase District Community Fund, was presented with a certificate of appreciation from Alief Independent School District Superintendent HD Chambers (left) and Dee Jones, Alief ISD business partner specialist, at the school district's annual business partner appreciation breakfast.

Alief ISD recognized the WDCF's support of the COMET (Community Outreach Missions Education Team) program offered at area apartment communities for Alief students after school, as well as the WDCF's donation of two soccer goals and equipment to Sneed Elementary School. The community fund also collected more than four carloads of donated school supplies last summer which were delivered to Sneed, Paul Revere Middle school and West Houston Assistance Ministries.
