FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
As promised, here is our first installment of The Vape Escape – a parent’s guide to understanding LC’s challenge with student vaping.

We felt that our first chapter should focus on the device itself; often when we confiscate a device and later meet with a parent to discuss student discipline, they are staggered to see the device their student was using.

“I had no idea that’s what that was!” is the statement we frequently hear.
Here is a photo lineup of vape devices and juice (vape liquid) that are available for purchase by 18-year-olds here in Spokane. (Note: the law will change in the fall and only persons 21-years-of-age will be able to purchase devices or juice.)

It’s important that you have conversations with your Tiger about the vaping issue they face at school, in social settings, with peers. Vaping has been glamorized by way of tricked out devices that turn vaping into a game of “Catch Me If You Can!”, by way of juice that is flavored with kid-friendly tastes like soda pop or sugar cereals, and by virtue of its marketing as the “anti-cigarette activity”.

Please connect with your child and advise that you want a safe conversation with them about what they’ve encountered in terms of vaping. Ask them if their friends vape. Do they vape? Why do they think teens do vape?

We would encourage that you hold this as a “no consequence” conversation. Kids need to feel that you are genuinely curious, concerned, open to dialogue, and seeking to understand.

Next week – we’ll share the latest information about the chemical consequences of vaping.

While many teens feel it’s exponentially more safe and less addictive than cigarette smoking, the CDC says otherwise.

Thanks to great planning on the part of our leadership class(!) the predicted rain this week held off until all fun, food and games were served.

Kids were AWESOME and it was a fun way to celebrate together one last time before the seniors leave. Gulp.

We are so hoping that you and yours have an awesome Memorial Day weekend and take time to honor loved ones, be grateful to those who have served, and to reconnect with kids.

The last few weeks are upon us and we want to finish strong!

INFORMATION
Fall 2019 Schedules: Our draft Fall 2019 schedules are now available on PowerSchool for students to view! These schedules are in very early draft form and we have 95.1% of students fully scheduled. The next step is to ensure that all students have the correct and desired classes by logging into PowerSchool to check that the right classes are assigned and that nothing has been missed (click on Next Year’s Schedule, then look at the Matrix view - works best on a computer, the app doesn't always show next year's classes).
  • If you have a hole in your schedule, that means you are one of the 4.9% that have scheduling issues. We will be working to move classes around to fix as many issues as possible. If we cannot find a solution, we will be calling you to the office to make a schedule change.
  • If you signed up to be an Intern (Seniors only), we haven't assigned specific periods to that class yet. Over the next few weeks, you'll see it move from INT period into periods 1-6.
  • If you don’t know how to get into PowerSchool, email theresam@spokaneschools.org or visit the Student Office for help.
  • If there is an error or a change is requested, go to the Student Office and fill out a blue sheet. You can see the changes reflected in PowerSchool once they are made. If a change cannot be made due to period conflicts or full classes, we will let you know.
  • Your classes are confirmed, but the periods and teachers WILL change many times over the next few months. Sorry, but we cannot promise specific teachers or periods due to the fluidity of the schedule and very full classes.
  • If you are planning on taking SVL, please go online to register soon to ensure a spot at www.spokanevirtual.com. For now, SVL is listed on schedules as “pending”, in August, the real SVL courses will be merged into PowerSchool.
  • If you are planning on enrolling in Running Start at the college, once you have a confirmed schedule, it is important to let us know to drop the LC classes.
Freshman Friday Frenzy : Friday Frenzy is a great opportunity for our LC Freshmen to receive support from staff for a two-hour block after school to raise their grade before the semester ends. There will be teachers available for all core subjects. If you have any questions, please call Veronica Steele, 354-6965.
  • Who: Any LC Freshman who wants to raise their grades.
  • When: Friday, May 31 from 2:40-4:40pm with dinner afterwards
  • Where: LC Library
  • What: Study time, homework catch up, tutors/teachers available
  • Why: Raise your grade and eat free pizza (pizza served 4:40-4:55pm)
Yearbook Distribution: Yearbooks will be distributed Tuesday, June 4 in the ground floor cafeteria before school, lunch, and after school. Yearbooks will be available for purchase beginning that morning at 7:30am in the Business Office for $60.
8th Grade Visit: will take place on May 31 from 9:20-11:15am . Students from SPS Middle Schools will ride bus transportation to and from LC, while students from area private schools will need to provide transportation to and from LC. While at LC, students will rotate through three areas to learn more about LC - in the Gym we'll have information about our sports and clubs, in the Auditorium there will be choir and drama performances, and in the library there will be question and answer time. Welcome to our new Tigers - the Class of 2023! If you have any questions, please call Veronica Steele, 354-6965.
Parent Input Opportunity: The League of Education Voters (LEV) is conducting a focus group to gather information on parents' perspective of the support their children received in high school to become college and career ready.

To be eligible to participate we are looking for parents of students of color who graduated from high school in 2018 or are graduating in 2019 and were taking dual credit classes (Career Technical Education CTE, AP course, Running star, or International Baccalaureate IB). The information gathered will be used to create and complete advocacy campaigns to increase the participation of underrepresented student groups in dual credit and CTE courses. Parents opinion on this topic will also help LEV and partners learn more about how underrepresented students and families in public high schools make decisions to participate in dual credit courses. Please join us on Wednesday, June 19 from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Spokane Public Library, 906 W Main St Spokane 99203, Downtown boardroom 3rd floor. Parking on 908 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

The group will consist of about 12 Parents, a moderator, and an assistant. We will provide drinks, coffee, snack, and  a $50 gift certificate  to reward participation. To sign up using this google form:   https://forms.gle/bngb8gLtkGWoEY416 or call 509-979-0421 or email:  LatinosSpokane@gmail.com

Social Studies teacher Carolyn Petek is in the process of forming a travel group through Education First (EF). If interested, please contact carolynp@spokaneschools.org .

COLLEGE & CAREER
SchooLinks: Juniors, when you are applying to colleges, be sure to log into our college application tracking system called SchooLinks. Students can access their account at www.lctigers.com - look for the link on the right.
Scholarship: Seniors, if you are headed to Spokane Community College to study CNC machining, look into their new scholarship for $4,500 (a full year of coursework!). Contact Jen Reynolds at jen.reynolds@ccs.spokane.edu for more information on how to apply.
SAT Saturday Testing Information: The SAT will be hosted on Saturdays at LC this year. Students register for exams directly on the SAT website, www.sat.collegeboard.org . Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year in high school. At least half of all students take the SAT twice - in the spring of their junior year and in the fall of their senior year. Most students also improve their score the second time.
  • June 1 (deadline to register, May 3)

The SAT test costs $64.50 per test with the essay (47.50 without the essay). Late registration incurs an additional $29 fee. If you cannot afford to pay the fee, you can see your counselor to apply for a fee waiver before you register online (click here for fee waiver information: http://sat.collegeboard.org/register/sat-fee-waivers ).
Free Online SAT Practice: All 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who took the PSAT in October can take the next step on their SAT practice journey by linking their College Board and Khan Academy accounts , which unlocks a free SAT study plan. Linking their accounts will send their PSAT scores to Khan Academy, giving them access to a personalized experience on Official SAT Practice . Research shows that studying on Official SAT Practice for 20 hours is associated with an average score gain of 115 points from the PSAT/NMSQT to the SAT. That's nearly double the average score gain of students who don't use Khan Academy.
ACT Testing: ACT college admissions test will be offered on Saturdays at FERRIS or EAST VALLEY High School. For information on test registration, visit: www.act.org . Be to Ferris by 7:45am, bring a printed copy of your test ticket, photo ID, pencils, and calculator. The test will end at 12:15pm (or 1:00pm if you are taking the ACT Plus Writing). The ACT costs $62.50 with the writing test ($46 without). The ACT will be offered: June 8.
