Association actively addresses the issue of Short-Term Rental Accommodation

New South Wales
The Association has been active in meeting with both the office of the Minister for Planning and the Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation, following the lodging of our submission at the end of September.

We have been advised that as a result of industry submissions the concept of a ‘Short term rental industry’ registration system run by Expedia and Airbnb is no longer being considered. Government has still not confirmed its final response.

Western Australia
Following the release of the WA Economics and Industry Standing Committee final report into short term rental accommodation in September 2019, the WA Government released its response on the 13 February 2020.

In its response, the Government agreed to adopt nearly all of the recommendations arising from the recent parliamentary inquiry into short-stay accommodation. A key recommendation is the adoption of a flexible, low cost and simple registration scheme for all short-term accommodation providers across the State.

An inter-agency Government working group has now been established.  Meetings were held between the Association and Government and Shadow Ministers on the week commencing the 17 January 2020 with the Association reinforcing its position in relation to registration, an enforceable Code of Conduct and planning requirements.

Queensland
Following extensive advocacy the Queensland Government has established a working group to determine the QLD framework on unregulated letting. As a member of the main committee and drafting subcommittee the Accommodation Association, is developing in partnership with government, a framework that will assist in levelling the playing field. Our submission to the Committee focused on the need for those operating in the unregulated market to comply with a code of conduct and planning laws which would include a cap on the number of nights in city locations. 

On the 21 January 2020 The Federal Court has found Trivago breached the Australian Consumer Law when it made misleading representations about hotel room rates both on its website and television advertising.


The Accommodation Association has responded strongly to the Cairns Regional Council's bed tax proposal. Far from generating income to grow tourism, a sector that represents 13.5% of Cairns total industry value add and represents 14.4% of Cairns employment, the tax is a further impost on accommodation providers, one of the most highly taxed in Australia. Meetings are being held with the Premiers office and Mayor.

The Federal Government announced a $76 million tourism recovery package on the 20 January in response to requests for support from the tourism sector.
On the 20 January the ATO advised that they had extended a package of tax assistance for people impacted by the recent devastating bushfires in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania as part of the whole-of-government response to the disaster.

The Association has introduced market insight reports for the Brisbane, Sydney, Greater Sydney and Melbourne markets. These reports will provide you overall insights into the performance of the market inclusive of the impact of events and new supply. Reports will be delivered to members by the eighth of each month to meet your hotel reporting time frames.

The Fair Work Commission (FWC) recently confirmed that changes to the Annualised Salary Arrangements for non-managerial employees in the Hospitality Industry (General) Award (clause 27.1) will commence soon.


The Honourable Kate Jones MP, Minister for Innovation and Tourism Industry Development and Minister for Cross River Rail, has officially opened the Growing Indigenous Tourism in Queensland Fund.  

Qantas on 09 February commenced three-weekly operations between Brisbane and San Francisco, unlocking an underserved market from the Queensland capital.

Qantas International will cut 16 per cent of Asia capacity until at least the end of May, impacting flights from Australia to mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore.


Qantas is now indicating it will proceed with Project Sunrise. The go/no-go decision on the A350-1000 order is due to be formally made by the end of March 2020, pending the outcome of negotiations.

The trade agreement with Hong Kong entered into force on 17 January 2020.  A-HKFTA provides Australian businesses greater certainty to trade and investment activities in Hong Kong.


Australia has ratified the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) following the recent visit to Australia by the President of Indonesia.

PAFTA will launch a new chapter in economic relations between Australia and Peru.

Scholarships of up to $5,000 for current and aspiring female leaders.
Scholarships of $2,000 to $5,000 are currently available to women working in the hospitality and tourism sector to help support their participation in a range of career building leadership development programs.

The initiative is providing junior through to executive managers with scholarships to support their growth and development. The scholarships assist with participation in one of three flagship development programs. The programs provide highly collaborative learning environments uniquely tailored to the needs of female leaders.
