Association actively addresses the issue of Short-Term Rental Accommodation
New South Wales
The Association has been active in meeting with both the office of the Minister for Planning and the Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation, following the lodging of our
submission at the end of September.
We have been advised that as a result of industry submissions the concept of a ‘Short term rental industry’ registration system run by Expedia and Airbnb is no longer being considered. Government has still not confirmed its final response.
Western Australia
Following the release of the WA Economics and Industry Standing Committee final report into short term rental accommodation in September 2019, the WA Government released its response on the 13 February 2020.
In its response, the Government agreed to adopt nearly all of the recommendations arising from the recent parliamentary inquiry into short-stay accommodation. A key recommendation is the adoption of a flexible, low cost and simple registration scheme for all short-term accommodation providers across the State.
An inter-agency Government working group has now been established. Meetings were held between the Association and Government and Shadow Ministers on the week commencing the 17 January 2020 with the Association reinforcing its position in relation to registration, an enforceable Code of Conduct and planning requirements.
Queensland
Following extensive advocacy the Queensland Government has established a working group to determine the QLD framework on unregulated letting. As a member of the main committee and drafting subcommittee the Accommodation Association, is developing in partnership with government, a framework that will assist in levelling the playing field. Our
submission to the Committee focused on the need for those operating in the unregulated market to comply with a code of conduct and planning laws which would include a cap on the number of nights in city locations.
