If you are missing Frankfort sunsets, views from the pier, and/or want to check out life on Main Street, though not the same as being there, perhaps the links below can help you escape for a bit.

Things are really opening up around here!
Case Count, October 5, 2020
* Benzie-Leelanau Health Department
** Positive test results are reflected in the county of full-time residency In other words, if a person lives downstate or out of state but tests positive in Benzie, their number may not be reported in the Benzie numbers. However, Contact Tracing is conducted in the local area.
For the upcoming flu season, flu vaccination will be very important because it can help reduce the overall impact of respiratory illnesses on the population and thus lessen the resulting burden on the healthcare system during the COVID19 pandemic. A flu vaccine may also provide several individual health benefits, including preventing you from getting sick with flu, reducing the severity of your illness if you do get flu, and reducing your risk of a flu-associated hospitalization.
Advanced Care Planning Workshops
Thursday, October 29: 5-7 pm
Online Via ZOOM

Medical issues sometimes arise that create confusion and uncertainty for patients, their families, and medical staff. Everyone wants to do the right thing – but in some cases, it’s not always clear what the right decision is. A little planning now will save those dearest to your heart unneeded stress later. Attend an advance care planning workshop to get your advance care planning process started.
Workshops will include:
  1. *The advance care planning workbook with step by step instructions for your advance care planning needs.
  2. Understand the importance of talking with loved one about our healthcare decisions.
  3. Choosing someone you trust most to speak for you if you become too sick to speak for yourself.
  4. *A page by page walk through of an advance directive so you know how to put your wishes in writing.
The workshops are free and open to the public. All virtual events require registration.
Your support of Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital is greatly needed and greatly appreciated. These are tough times in the medical world and we need to keep the doors open and the services going and growing in Benzie County!

Kate Walbert
with guest host Shannon Kleiber

From Kate Walbert, the highly acclaimed National Book Award nominee, comes She Was Like That, a dazzling, career-spanning collection of new and  selected stories. In these twelve deft, acutely funny and often heartbreaking stories, Kate Walbert delves into the hearts and minds of women. Her  characters are searchers, uneasy in one way or another. They yearn for connection. They question the definitions assigned to them as wives, mothers, and daughters; they seek their own way within isolated, and often isolating, circumstances, reveling in small, everyday epiphanies and   moments of clarity.

Kate Walbert’s novels include:
  • She Was Like That: New and Collected Stories; HisFavorites, one of The Atlantic Magazine’s best books of 2018 and a 2019 New York Times 100 Notable books Selection;
  • The Sunken Cathedral; A Short History of Women, finalist for the LA Book Prize in Fiction, and one of the New York Times ten best books of 2009;
  • Our Kind, a finalist for the National Book Award; The Gardens of Kyoto, and Where She Went.
Also, her short fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Best American Short Stories, The O. Henry Prize Stories, and numerous other publications.

GUEST HOST SHANNON KLEIBER

Author, producer of To the Best of Our Knowledge, a former Washington Post staff writer and columnist, and author of two non-fiction books, The Dinner Club: How the Masters of the Internet Universe Rode the Rise and Fall of the Greatest Boom in History, and On My Honor: Real Life Lessons From America’s First Girl Scout.

LITERARY SPONSORS: THE LADIES LIBRARY, LLC, AND NANCY & KENT WALTON

“In this evocative collection, the love of women for their children can provide salvation or a trap. Or both, at the same time. Walbert captures maternal love and its moments of grace with an unusual combination of restraint and rhapsody.”
