Any advice for switching to 3rd party inks?

  • We are a small sign shop in a rural area and generally turn our printer around not long after warranty so we are bound to using OEM inks but there seams to be a wide variation in OEM ink price depending on where you shop, so we shop around for the best price. There is a lot to consider in using third party inks, long term comparability with the machine, longevity of the ink in our harsh environment along with the cost savings.
  • Don't switch unless you really trust the person selling it to you. We swapped once (with a large supplier) after being told it was exactly the same as genuine, but cheaper, and within a few hours of the first cartridge going in, we all had terrible headaches. They wouldn't take them back because technically it wasn't faulty, so we never bought any materials from them ever again.
  • Dont!!!! Unless you are a chemist and know exactly what is in the ink and how the print heads are made. Damage to printer, crappy colour profiles, lack of warranty support. Attempting to save cents can cost $$$, waste time and material plus frustrate staff and customers with substandard jobs. Some aftermarket inks may be OK but not worth all the risks. If you cannot recover the price of the ink in your costing time to get out of the game. Bigger saving are elsewhere.
  • First ask yourself what your motivation is. Is your current ink not performing or is this just a financial decision? If it is have you tried every other a avenue to save on ink? Colour profiling, reduce wastage or negotiating with your current supplier. If you have done all that do you know what your savings would be? Are those savings worth the potential issues you may encounter? Personally we have never wanted to go down this avenue as the risks vs the savings looks like false economy. Rather charge a fraction more for the prints as ink has never represented a great part of our cost compared to everything else involved printing great looking prints. Wide Format Online Discussion Forum
Hi all, I'm Ray. I run a home business doing digital signs, canvas and vinyl. I have a complex question regarding 3D Lenticular printing processes through a Roland Inkjet Printer, Roland RIP Software, Triaxes 3DMasterKit Lenticular software & KDX Lenticular lenses. I am wondering if anyone here has any experience regarding the topics mentioned above?
