This week's survey:

(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

The survey results on last week's survey ....

Do you think it is a good idea to add new services to your printing business such as embroidery, product marking, T-Shirt printing for instance?

  • If you can add a product or service to your business that can increase your bottom line, why wouldn't you. Plenty of quality providers out there that can add to your business with no capital outlay. (Reid, Juice Print) .
  • If you have an outlet for the extra services, sure, but to start from scratch you'll need to be able to absorb the extra expense of machinery and stock whilst you build the business up, and then try and compete with specialists in those fields who have a name and reputation already.
  • I don't think it's a good move for the typical sign company. Promotion items and clothing are another whole industry on their own and I'd rather be expanding our skillset/capabilities/quality in complex/arger/high end signs than getting into low value jobs.
  • Not unless you think you have the market for it. dropping 70k on an embroidery machine, 15k on a laser or 40k for a carousel and drying tunnel isn't going to improve your bottom line if you don't have the customers.
just adding services doesnt make customers walk thru the door.
we do it all and each section has taken years to build up, if you're existing business cant handle the expenses of expanding while the new business builds you're going to have a bad time.
then you have the extra space required and don't forget the training, none of the examples you mentioned are turnkey operations. this isn't bouncy castles or cutting lawns
  • For those particular subjects you have prescribed, the answer is yes and no. Product marking should not be much of a hassle as the machinery is not too expensve and freely available and the skills required are relatively easy. T-Shirt printing, the cost of entering is not too forbidding but I think the skills required could take some learning with expensive msitakes on the way. As for emroidery, a big no no due to cost of equipment and the skills required. Stick to your focus  - that's my advice.. However, subcontracting work to 3rd parties is an option but it is also frought with potential problems.

Wide Format Online Discussion Forum
Hi all, I'm Ray. I run a home business doing digital signs, canvas and vinyl. I have a complex question regarding 3D Lenticular printing processes through a Roland Inkjet Printer, Roland RIP Software, Triaxes 3DMasterKit Lenticular software & KDX Lenticular lenses. I am wondering if anyone here has any experience regarding the topics mentioned above?
