Library Matters
This year's Library Summer Learning Challenge is More Exciting Than Ever
"Library Matters" - excerpted from The Spectrum Magazine
by Derek Wolfgram, Library Director, Redwood City Public Library

It's time once again for everyone's favorite annual tradition of summer learning at the Library! This year's theme is "Reading Takes You Everywhere," and there will be an exciting array of programs and activities for the whole family.

The National Summer Learning Association has documented that children, especially from low income families, can experience losses in academic growth over the summer. However, with participation in fun and engaging summer learning activities like those offered by the Library and Redwood City School District, kids can even experience academic growth during summer break instead of losing ground.

The 2018 Summer Learning Challenge began on June 1, and kids of all ages can sign up at any Redwood City Public Library location (Downtown, Fair Oaks, Redwood Shores, or Schaberg) or through the Library website. All four libraries have weekly events all summer long, including magic & ventriloquism (Magic Dan, Randel McGee and Groark, Dan & James Chan), music and dance (Soul Soup), comedy and circus (Coventry & Kaluza), animals (Norcal Bats, Conservation Ambassadors), theatre (Circulo Cultural), and puppets (Magical Moonshine).

But that's not all! .... Read the full article.

WHAT'S NEW
We are beyond excited to celebrate the grand reopening of Fair Oaks Branch Library on Saturday, June 23!

The new space features: a new Teen Space, a bilingual Farmers Market Truck interactive play area, new children's furniture and shelving, new comfortable seating, new carpet and upholstery, more power outlets, and more.
Come celebrate with us! The program of scheduled speeches, performances, and activities is here.
A WORD FROM OUR FOUNDATION
Redwood City Library Foundation to Upgrade the Redwood Shores Interpretive Center
The Interpretive Center at the Redwood Shores Branch Library is adjacent to the Belmont Slough and the Bay Trail, with windows overlooking the wetlands. Outdoor displays depict wetland birds; interactive displays inside show other wetland animals and plants, with a large aquarium housing living native fish and plants. Other exhibits include a Build a Bird activity, bird footprints, a mud sculpture, and a recycling display. The center is visited regularly by classes from local elementary schools.

Opened in 2008, the center is now 10 years old and the Redwood City Library Foundation is raising funds to update it with modern technology that allows more interactivity with the flexibility to change information. Some displays have faded; others have missing or broken pieces. The wetlands itself has evolved due to climate change and rising sea levels, which has changed the associated wildlife and plants, and the center's displays and data need to be updated accordingly.

The library staff worked with a group of students from Design Tech High School to do the design work. Design Tech, a public charter high school supported by Oracle, combines academic content with creative problem solving. Ten students conducted interviews with library users to determine what improvements are needed.

Gordon and Betty Moore became honorary co-chairs of the campaign and provided a $50,000 grant to start the renovation process. Oracle sponsored necessary upgrades in the aquarium.  Our goal is to raise $200,000 more for this upgrade: to install touchscreens, update the signage and maps, and include the information about sea level rise and climate change. We need your help!
