This year's workshops are hands on, with an emphasis on group discussion and case studies. Each session provides opportunities to share ideas, work together on strategies, develop practical solutions to real issues, and take away tips and tools to implement at your workplace.

Time Is Running Out To Participate in the 2017 Boland Survey
Human resource professionals, executive directors/CEOs, and board members look to the Boland Survey for annual data on salary trends and predictions, benefits, and human resource practices needed to make informed compensation decisions. This is the only survey in Canada that includes annual and equivalent hourly rates for the nonprofit sector. The deadline to add your data to the survey is September 1.

Calgary is Growing and Changing in Many New Ways
The City of Calgary's 2017 Civic Census results indicate that our city's population continued to increase in the past year, driven mainly by the number of children born in Calgary, rather than migration. Neighbourhoods at the edge of the city continued to grow in 2016/2017, as well as some areas in the core. As the nonprofit sector in Calgary works hard to serve the local community, this recent data from the Civic Census allows organizations to plan their programs and services; they can better understand where people are choosing to live in the city and can reach them more effectively.
Review of Draft Municipal Government Act Regulations
As part of the Government of Alberta renewed Municipal Government Act, draft regulations have been released and posted for public comment. Of interest to the sector: proposed changes to the Community Organizations Property Tax Exemption Regulation (COPTER), which allows many nonprofits to enjoy relief from paying property tax on their facilities and spaces. The most significant change proposed is to remove Class B bingo facilities from being eligible for tax exemption. Your comments are accepted by the government on this draft regulation until September 22.
CRA Releases Two New Videos on Charity Auctions
Canada Revenue Agency has released two new videos for charities to better understand the rules and regulations surrounding auctions. The videos focus on the donor advantage and the 80% rule, and issuing donation receipts at auctions. (CRA also welcomes your feedback on these videos so they can improve their outreach to the sector)
Reflect (articles, blogs, and other ideas worth sharing)
This Volunteer Alberta workbook is a step-by-step resource to support the development of volunteer screening policies and procedures. The workbook explores the reasons for screening volunteers, assists in developing policies, and answers questions about the volunteer screening process. Additional volunteer screening templates and resources are available on the Volunteer Alberta website.
Evaluation continues to be challenging for organizations, and increasingly expected of them. The Ontario Nonprofit Network believes the nonprofit sector is ready for, and in need of, an evaluation ecosystem to support nonprofits in their evaluation work. They have released seven recommendations for improving evaluation in the sector - working toward an evaluation ecosystem where it is straightforward, efficient, and rewarding for nonprofits and funders to invest in evaluation work.
