EXPERIENCE CARPINTERIA WITH SKETCH CRAWLING JOURNALING

Experience the beauty of Carpinteria through plein air art journaling, or "sketch crawling." We will go to different locations, from beach to burger joint to see and develop awareness and to record details both large and small. Three sessions will give you the opportunity to really dive into art journaling. Supply list will be sent upon registration.

ANGELS AND FAIRIES - ORNAMENTS OR EARRINGS: AGES 12 TO ADULT

BEGINNING DRAWING
Learn and develop drawing skills as a foundation towards painting or as a refresher. Includes demonstration and practice on use of line, value, composition and understanding perspective. We will explore various drawing mediums including charcoal, pen & ink and watercolor pencils. Bring your own sketchbook to class. Materials list will be sent upon registration.

COLLAGE CRITIQUE CLASS
Both experienced and new collage artists are welcome to join this fun, team-based workshop. You will receive a syllabus prior to class, and each class will begin with a discussion of the week's assignment as well as a group critique. There will be weekly demos and guest artists. This will be a journey of creative discovery and a positive visual experience. Works in progress are welcome. We will also have in-class projects, time permitting.

BEGINNING PAINTING

Learn basic color theory and explore painting techniques while developing visual awareness and self-expression. Explore principles in two-dimensional art, using acrylic as a highly versatile medium to discover techniques in painting, mixing, color combination, and color perception. Experience is helpful but not required. This is a good course to take along                                 with Beginning Drawing.

PAINTING AND DRAWING THE COSTUMED/CLOTHED MODEL
This workshop is for those who already have figure drawing and painting experience on an intermediate to advanced level. Working with a live model, each session will start with some warm up exercises before beginning the main long pose. The instructor will be available to guide you through different aspects of your work or you may proceed as you wish. Only odorless solvents are permissible for oil painters.

ASSEMBLAGE AND FOUND OBJECTS WORKSHOP
Learn the art of assemblage in a supportive open-studio atmosphere with hands-on instruction. Using found objects and mixed media, we will discover new ways to put objects together. Power tools provided. Objects for assemblage and non-power tools will be provided by students. Materials list will be sent upon registration.

THE ART OF ENCAUSTICS MINI WORKSHOP

Have you been thinking about exploring the exciting medium of hot wax? Come to this introductory workshop and learn about and experiment with encaustic wax. The class will be small, designed to provide a personal and hands-on learning environment to help artists discover their own voices. Students are required to wear long sleeve, tight fitting shirts and work pants. All materials will be provided.



INTRODUCTION TO EGG TEMPERA

This workshop will introduce you to the ancient medium of egg tempera. We will make our paints from scratch and use egg yolk as our medium. Our panels will be made with traditional gesso. You should expect to complete one or two works over the three days. All materials except brushes will be provided.



MICRO-MACRAMÉ JEWELRY: AGES 12 TO ADULT
Learn to make necklaces or bracelets using a variety of easy macramé knotting techniques. We will work with different kinds of cording material and a wide selection of beads. You will learn the square or flat knot, half-hitch and larks head knot. No experience necessary. All materials will be provided. Please bring a clipboard if you have one. Appropriate for all skill levels.

THE BEAUTY THAT IS CARPINTERIA - A TWO-DAY WATERCOLOR EXPERIENCE

Through demonstrations, lecture, and playful splashing of watercolor, participants will learn methods to put into practice while painting scenes of charming Carpinteria. Students will utilize photos and/or paint on location near the Arts Center. Techniques in painting foliage and street scenes will be discussed and demonstrated, with an emphasis on light and shadow and composition. Individual and group critique included. Come join the fun! Materials list will be sent upon registration.


JEWELRY: LINKS AND CHAINS: AGES 12 TO ADULT
Design a chain, necklace, bracelet or even earrings by connecting together wrapped loop bead variations and hammered links such as the "figure 8" link, "S" link, spiral link, etc. You will also learn to make you own jump rings and hook-and-eye clasps for your chains. No experience required, but those with previous experience can explore more link variations. All wire and beads provided.

CAPTURE CARPINTERIA WITH YOUR CAMERA
Join local photographer Glenn Dubock as you craft your vision of the World's Safest Beach. Walk the shore and streets in this hands-on field trip with Glenn, learning to see this slice of paradise in unique and artistic ways. Back at the Arts Center, you will learn tips to get your work printed to perfection or published in a magazine.


BEGINNING TO EXPLORE PASTEL PAINTING

This will be a fun introduction to painting with pastels. Learn about value, composition, and the "why" of your painting, then create a pastel painting of your own. Step-by-step instruction will be given, along with discussion of different material choices for pastels. Meet the Iron Man Steven Handelman at Steve Handelman Studios. This is a wrought iron atelier where lighting fixtures are handmade by skilled artisans. There is nothing like it in town, and maybe anywhere! Each piece is customized and individual design decisions are made regarding finishes, glass type, mounting hardware and size of the piece. We will start in the factory and watch the artisans in process, then we will move to the showroom to view the final masterpieces!
